No, I decided to stop buying alcohol back in June (not that I was drinking a lot, just a beer a night). Besides having a single drink on Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year's Eve, I haven't had any alcohol since.

but about 1.5 years ago I decided to stop drinking and it was really easy. I don't crave it or want it. I have a few drinks at parties now, and had two glasses of wine on my anniversary, but didn't get drunk and didn't want to.

Same. I'm going out tonight with a couple friends who already had the rona but I can't drink alone. It's boring and depressing, and isn't really the 'fix' I crave anyway. I'd much rather smoke a joint and play video games or binge tv.

I haven't had anything close to a "normal" social life since covid so I don't even know how much social drinking would appeal to me anymore. I'd probably still go have a beer or two just to hang out with people but my getting actually drunk days ended years ago. I don't really buy beer that much at home anymore either. I still like beer but the combination of having a (slight) gut, having tried most of what's out there, and feeling like it's wasted drinking alone have made it a lot less appealing over time.

Nope. I am psychologically resistant to dependencies. Even when I had this fucking shitty medication I took for a while and after I stopped it gave me almost two weeks of what a heroin withdrawal sounds like, I was like "fuck it, I am not letting this win" and just laid there feeling like I was dying and rode it out until it went away just to spite the ordeal itself. Being stubborn and competitive and not wanting to "lose", even to inanimate or intangible things, has its benefits.

Plus, I see all those gross bums cluttering the streets and stealing and think "addiction is why most of them became that" and it's a pretty strong warning. None of them thought "gee, I am going to have a substance abuse problem when I grow up" when they started whatever it was. I also HATE the feeling of being intoxicated. I like beer, so I have a couple per month maybe.

I find drinking alcohol is a good way to relax. I'm a very welcoming, chilled out guy without too. I understand alcohol effects people differently though. It's sad it makes you feel antagonistic. I hope you can work through your problems. Perhaps therapy might help.

I think now that im laid off i wont be drinking as much. Working IT support, most of us drank heavily every weekend to ease the stress of the job.

every support ticket felt like a court trial in which you were guilty by default and had to fight to prove your innocence

"Never" is untrue, otherwise I'd never be able to describe myself as an ex-alcoholic. But there's a lot of denial, and it's stubborn. Not entirely surprising. When you live in a culture where there's a recreational drug that's not only legal but socially acceptable -- in fact almost obligatory, since everyone's encouraged to use it, heavily and often -- it's difficult to know exactly when you crossed over the line, when socially normal behaviour overlapped with addiction.

definitely, I know a lot of people who know and say they're alcoholics, they just like drinking so they'll continue doing so. Shit I know I qualify as an alcoholic a lot of times cause I sometimes binge drink where I go for 3 days or so, I can also go for months without a drink but I also go overboard sometimes too.

I've been the legal age to drink for more than half my life, but the number of times I imbibed alcohol...I can count on one hand.
