how many people would be interested in a thing where we all watch a movie once a week (give or take) and discuss/rate? we can discuss more logistics in this topic but here's the stuff i'm thinking to start:

  • users take turns recommending a grouping of 3-5 movies
  • rest of the club votes and watches the winner within a week
  • i will record ratings and keep spreadsheet and all that, retroactive ratings ok if you missed week, etc.
  • you can join in whenever week, participate whenever but we'll have some kind of minimum threshold if you want to stay on the recommendation list

if you are interested, post in this topic and name two movies you would want to possibly see for our first viewing/discussion! i will put all the replies into a big poll and we'll vote on our first movie sometime soon if it looks like there's enough interest to get this started.

since i typically like going in with as little information as possible, i'll usually hear something good about a film or see something that interests me, (particular director/actor, etc.) put it on my watchlist and then forget about it until i see it pop up later. so i'll usually try to give as little information as possible when describing movies for polls. i'm guessing there's going to be a good chance people will know about whatever movie gets mentioned anyway but this is on the assumption that people haven't heard of some of these. i'll personally go for a mix of things that i want to see and things i haven't seen in a while and want to revisit in my groupings.

my two are:

Mother (2009): South Korean film directed by Bong Joon-ho (Parasite, Memories of Murder, Snowpiercer) starring Kim Hye-ja and Won Bin (The Man From Nowhere, Tae Guk Gi) about a mother whose son is accused of murder.

The Assistant (2019): Directed by Kitty Green and starring Julia Garner (Ozark). i've never seen anything by Kitty Green but i saw Julia Garner in Ozark so yeh which was definitely a show but i liked her in it. i don't know anything else about this film. it's about an assistant at work. in an office presumably. i guess stuff happens to her.

hey so it looks like we got enough interest for at least the first viewing so i'll ask some logistical stuff. would appreciate responses so i know everyone's preferences and things can run as smooth as possible!

right now, i am thinking weekly movie is decided by some time around every Friday. assuming that people who have limited time throughout the week have weekends free, they can go into their weekends knowing what the movie is and plan accordingly. this would mean that whoever's turn it is that week would give their list of movies by the end of Wednesday and everyone would vote around Thursday. of course i'm sure everyone's schedule will be all over the place and not even the same week-to-week and we're dealing with multiple timezones so who knows. but it would be nice to have a consistent time every week so everyone knows what to expect.

would you prefer one general topic or different topics every week? new topics every week make it easier for new people to join and we get the title of the movie in the topic title but there are bound to be slow weeks and topics that don't get a lot of posts and i'll have to close them every week to prevent clutter. i also don't want people feeling dissuaded from discussing past movies because it's not in the topic title. i am leaning towards one general topic at the moment. i can just @ everyone for votes/movie announcements.

as mentioned in the opening post, i would like some kind of minimum threshold to stay on the list to recommend movies, say 60%. so if it's your turn to recommend but you haven't seen at least 60% of the movies recommended, your turn will be skipped and you'll go to the bottom of the list. 60% seems like it'll allow some leeway for missed weeks, life issues and seems manageable for you to keep your turn provided you're somewhat participating. and of course, you can always catch up and watch past stuff.

let me know what you guys think!

I'll start by nominating two movies I haven't seen but want to.

Portrait of a Lady On Fire
Kajilliionare

And yeah, one topic sounds fine. It would be preferable if we could edit topic titles or even just the first post with new and relevant information, but why would GameFAQs need modern forum tech in 2021

happy new year!

let's start the voting process for now. hopefully we'll have a movie picked by some time tomorrow. we can still add to the list of suggestions for now for newcomers and people who haven't suggested yet.

Vote for any and all movies you would be interested in seeing for the first week (no limit to votes). Movie at end with most votes wins. Do not vote for any movie you suggested yourself (I will be counting it automatically). If you do not intend to vote and are fine with whatever wins, please reply with "No Vote" so there is as little of a waiting period as possible. You can just post your votes in this topic or PM me.

List:
The Assistant (2019)
August Rush (2007)
Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb (1964)

so obviously the types of movies that are picked will depend on the participants and i have no delusions about the fact that there will be disagreements. but i think most of us understand that by choosing to participate in something like this, there's an agreement to be open-minded and see movies that you may not necessarily choose to see on your own and maybe even end up disliking. it's really not personal to not like a movie someone else recommended.

that being said, maybe there's some weeks where you object to whatever the pick was some reason. while i would obviously encourage seeing whatever the pick was, ultimately it's up to you and it's not like your viewing of the movie will be enforced in any way. that's part of the reason i mentioned the 60% (subject to change) thing btw in addition to any time constraints that may arise, etc. and that's why we vote anyway.

like i'll say right now that if Human Centipede is picked, i will not be choosing to see it under any circumstance.

Im being very lazy right now so if this is too much of a pain you can just ignore my vote until I have more time to look but for now:

Any movie that appears on Netflix, HBO Max, Hulu, Disney+ or Peacock is a yes for me and all others are no. I have enough movies that I do not want to buy or rent any more, but if I can easily stream it then Ill definitely watch.

Hope that isnt too difficult to tabulate and if it is Ill try to look through individually later!
