pretty much yeah, even in anime this is very often the case

you're writing about 16 year old high school children, but you yourself are probably 28-42, so you end up kind of romanticizing yourself

Randy Marsh used to be awesome. His decline mirrors that of South Park's.

Moms get to be generically nurturing while dads get to be role models and offer life lessons and motivation. There are obviously exceptions, but generally media seems to portray mothers as relatively passive hard to properly convey or downright negative stereotypes.

Randy becoming more prominent in South Park is actually what I would cite as one of the major problems. For at least the past two seasons he's been more central than any of the kids and it's fucking exhausting.

They're often not? The best character is generally whoever the show seems to revolve around. For KotH, that's Hank. For Married with Children, that's Al.

Malcolm in the Middle is a little different. Francis was clearly the best character and has my favorite storylines (I especially love when his mom was adding fuel to the fire between him and his wife before she learned why they were arguing -- he was annoyed because his wife insisted on driving him home because he was drunk). Hal was maybe a close second.

While I like Red, I'm not sure I'd rank him as the best character on That 70s Show.

And it's worth noting that when the dad isn't the main character, he's either an oafish buffoon or a hard-ass. (And sometimes it's true even when he is the main character.)
