its a mutation to the spike protein, which isn't a good thing since its the protein targeted by the vaccines. but you've got to keep in mind that the protein is fairly large target site and the antibodies generated from the vaccine will likely still have a high affinity for the protein even with some small mutations to it.

the issue right now is that the mutations appear to make the virus more virulent. there's also the issue that the mutation rate seems higher then earlier suspected, higher mutation rate means that as the vaccine rolls out there's going to be a greater chance that we could see a vaccine resistant strain emerge.

key takeaway here is that people need to do better to reduce spread now.

the worst thing about these vaccines are the extremely limited supply. as more and more people get vaccinated you're going to see more and more stupid people ignoring social distancing rules; because the vaccine takes almost a month to actually become fully effective, and because there's a solid chance that even the fully vaccinated could still potentially become short term asymptomatic carriers of the virus, we're likely going to end up with the perfect storm of dumbfuckery causing huge upswings in infection rates well into april/may/june. and the more people that get infected, the higher the likelihood we'll see a mutation that can at least partially ignore the vaccine.

this cant be overstated either. lots of people with 'long haul' covid related issues that just aren't going away months after the infection. my brother got it in early march and still has trouble going up a few steps without getting winded. he's in his 30s and was in good health before it.

probably not. interspecies transmission isn't very common. more likely its a mutation that's taken place within the human hosts since we're going through a pandemic event.
