They might only get part time hours which would qualify them for food stamps if they dont make enough

I imagine it benefits her to make Amazon jobs look as terrible as possible given that she fought hard to prevent that Amazon HQ from opening in her district that would have brought with it a ton of jobs and an influx of tax revenue.

Doesn't matter if they pay well if they don't give enough hours for you to survive on. Or that living expenses are just so much that even a decent wage isn't enough to pay your bills.

You don't know what you're talking about. AOC was opposed to a bad deal with Amazon that involved tax breaks for a company that already barely pays any taxes.

And you don't need Amazon to create jobs. Public works programs can create plenty of good paying jobs while simultaneously rejuvenating decaying communities and crumbling infrastructure.

Okay, well ping me when AOC has managed to create enough public works jobs in her district to offset the number of jobs that Amazon would have brought.

The fact that she opposed Amazon cutting a deal with the city doesn't change the fact that those jobs went elsewhere. I'm sure all the people in her district that can't find work really appreciate her standing up to her principles.

How is being on food stamps and/or homeless whilst having a job not a scam? Can you explain how it isn't a good point?

You appear to have done a "whatabout", ignored her point and then made up another one in your head.

Why is it on her to offset that? She wasn't taking something away from people that already existed. You don't know if Amazon would have gone there anyway or that she singlehandedly turned them away. By that logic I guess she gets credit for every new job in her district too?

Also a better measure than "jobs", because as she said a ton of jobs are shit and barely help, would be if her district reduces the number of people who are homeless and on food stamps, but even then, there's only so much she can do about that in her position

It's literally her job to represent the interests of her district. The Amazon HQ was going to bring with it 25,000 jobs. How is lobbying against that in the interest of her district?

https://www.cnbc.com/2019/02/14/new-york-will-lose-the-bulk-of-the-25000-jobs-that-were-promised-by-amazon-hq2.html
The loss of most of the new jobs is a major setback for New York as Amazon's new headquarters and its additional workforce were expected to further accelerate the city's economic growth, especially in certain sectors like technology and advertising. New York Governor Andrew Cuomo previously said the deal would bring in approximately $27 billion in revenue in exchange for the roughly $3 billion incentive package.

Actually reading the bloomberg article, it does absolutely no analysis on the numbers they gathered. It says the average pay for warehouse workers in a region drops immediately after amazon opens up there, which could just have been because they hire a shitton of people, many of whom will be in entry level positions.

Anyway, amazon might be a crappy company to work for because of their overall culture, but the pay is what attracts most people in the first place.

Sure, so AOC should have done that instead of fighting to turn away 27 billion in revenue and 25,000 jobs because they get 3 billion up front and "Amazon man bad."

Well, yeah, because now all the eggs aren't in one basket. Instead of chasing that one big monolithic corporation you're going to shit on for being "evil" anyway, small and medium businesses can more easily move in and stick around when they're not going to be taxed to death.

That's an easy case, but even seemingly successful deals aren't what they're cracked up to be. To illustrate the point, let's say Amazon creates 1,000 jobs now instead of 25,000 with the tax deal. It's not necessarily true you want the latter even if you get all those jobs. For one thing, the world doesn't stop because Amazon decided not to create hq2. A certain number of jobs will be created regardless, the economy doesn't resolve around Amazon. For another, you can use those tax dollars on other things that might create more jobs per dollar. It's also a question of where the people who fill the jobs come from; in a place like NYC, plenty of people might commute from out of state, so your tax dollars are benefiting other localities and states (while putting pressure on your infrastructure).

It's not always straightforward like that
