What do you personally believe should happen to prisoners in jail for it now?

I'm curious

Nobody should be in jail for naturally-growing plants. That goes for psilocybin, too. I dont smoke or eat the latter, but Im not one of those turds that complain about something just to complain.

The only crime these people committed is either supported someone not having to pay taxes, or not paid taxes, based on whether theyre a buyer or a seller.

Reduced sentence. Although some offenders should be either in rehab or released.

Depends on what charges they were indicted on. Some could be released, others could get reduced sentences, and some are probably shit heads that should serve their whole sentence.

Released

But also no lawsuits or anything for compensation for the period they were previously in jail, since at the time it was illegal.
Just wanted to add that part.

everyone in prison for it should be freed immediately, everyone with a previous conviction for it should be immediately and unconditionally pardoned, and every legal cannabis business should be required to invest a certain percentage of its profits into the (mostly poor, mostly non-white) communities that have been terrorized for decades because of the failed war on drugs

Assuming no other charges? Released.

Maybe dealers stay with a reduced sentence, but even that's more of a 'they were dealing drugs' than a 'weed is bad' thing.

I'm a total hard-ass when it comes to rules, but even I think if something isn't a crime anymore you may as well free the person who committed it. If they had other things on there, like assault, obviously they should serve out those sentences, but if they are literally in prison for a crime that can no longer even be committed, it seems dumb. Even if you don't give a fuck about the person and see it as "they broke the law at the time," fair enough, but justify it by thinking "my tax dollars aren't housing and feeding and guarding this person anymore and can be spent elsewhere."

Reduced sentence, if anything. They had still broken the law and should be held accountable for that fact.

It's weird as hell to me to think that there are people sitting in prison right now in first world countries because they were caught with weed.

It's a plant that makes you feel goofy if you smoke it. And tax dollars are spent incarcerating people who get caught possessing it.

I would say for any other charges, their time in jail after being sentenced for said crimes counts fully towards serving those sentences.

Or something like that...

Problem with that line of thinking in this case is that most things that are illegal are morally objectionable or damaging to society whereas growing or consuming marijuana is neither and so it was never "bad" to break that law. The law should not have existed and was implemented purely as a means of controlling a certain segment of the population.

Released and i say it for a few reasons. If something is now legal why shoulf people previously locked up for it continue to not only suffer but be a burden on taxpayers? And as a CO I can tell you people in for petty shit like that tend to be the biggest problem inamates. Either cause they typically don't get a lot of time and thus dont care or they are just salty about it. I go with the former as people with short sentences tend to be bigger pains in the ass all around but either way if some pf them could gotten out of my hair when what they did was victimless please do

I was curious what happened when prohibition ended. I found this.

https://vinepair.com/articles/violators-prohibition-serve-full-sentence-post-repeal/

Few individuals were released after Prohibition was repealed, Ruth Engs, a professor of applied health science at Indiana University, told me via email. Sentences were generally served out. They had illegally manufactured alcohol when it was illegal, Engs explained.

Another hurdle to vacating Prohibition convictions was the fact that often, individuals convicted of crimes were generally not solely convicted for illegal alcohol sales, but also for crimes that went hand in hand with those sales, like cross-border smuggling, various gun crimes, tax evasion, and a variety of others, Okrent explains.

In bold are what I think are the relevant arguments. I see no problem with reducing their sentence to time served in the most minor of cases but that's not an appropriate action for more severe cases.
