Entire pardoning system needs a full systematic upheaval.

So this is definitely him being fully aware that he is going to have charges brought against him after he's out and is trying to cover his ass.

I'm not sure if it just zeroes it out completely but I know this NDAA contains pay raises for the military, paid family leave for them, weapons purchases, and a bunch of military policies (including cybersecurity ones that are looking pretty important in light of the hack.) It also has some limits in there on how much money the President can just move to domestic projects (which is a pretty clear response to how Trump has shifted defense money to the wall when Congress has refused to give him the money he wants for it)

It also has a provision in there to start the process for changing the name of bases named after Confederate leaders from 10 bases which Trump calls out in his veto letter alongside his section 230 whining.

I think DOD would be operating on... almost nothing, really, if an NDAA wasn't passed, given this is the legislation hat gives them $635bn. (Also $26bn to DOE for its nuclear programs and $69bn to counterterrorism against ISIS in the Middle East/War in Afghanistan.) Looking it up, their operating budget for 2020 was $721bn and given I cant imagine Congress ever cutting military funding (which is a problem for another discussion) I'm guessing this isn't the sole source of funding for DOD but it sure is most of it.

Edit: I'm pretty sure a lot of things under DOD are considered mandatory funding and would go on as usual, but I think it would generally be like upkeep stuff.

The more I think about it, the more I think he probably does try the self-pardon. Reason being is that I think he'll continue to live in his delusion that he can somehow overturn the election with the state legislatures until Congress certifies the Electoral College result... and Pence is involved in that process in his role as President of the Senate. I think Trump would be loathe to "give up" the Presidency in any circumstance, even if it was only for like the last day and would ensure his pardon was foolproof but would he be willing to turn it over to Pence after he's "betrayed" him by... doing his constitutionally required role of saying Biden won?

As expected, House GOP blocked Pelosi's unanimous consent request for the $2000 checks.

She said that when they're back in session on Monday (this was just a pro-forma meeting seeing as it's Christmas Eve) they'll hold a roll-call vote on it. Presumably it'll pass there and then just die in the Senate as McConnell never brings it up for consideration.

No matter what, the Rs are gonna look bad. It's just a matter of whether the ire goes more towards the House or the Senate.

No doubt this is already going to have runoff implications, but if it passes the House and McConnell ignores it until it's too late, it's gonna be all the worse for them. They have to contend with both the Rs that won't bother without Trump on the ticket, and the ones who will not vote or vote against them because they went against Trump's demand for the 2K checks.

Reducing the foreign aid is a ridiculous thing to ask for and killing it altogether would only pay for like 10% of the boost. I would be extremely disappointed in the Dems if they actually did that (but they're not dumbasses so they didn't!).
