Watching these videos about pokemon and apparently if the game detects its being run on an emulator it will actually freeze and stop playing.

Imagine a company being so against people not paying them for their product and the hard work they must have put in to make it that they install anti piracy software like that.

This is a pretty standard anti-piracy trap though. I remember the lulz when Chrono Trigger DS launched and a bunch of kiddos accidentally outed themselves when they asked why the game froze at the first time warp. >_>

And afaik Earthbound still has the most sadistic anti-piracy measures.

Meanwhile FR/LG dont give a fuck, you get to Sevii Islands and some rando says by the way, if you like this game, buy it or die <_>

I think the best anti-piracy they did was Star Tropics for NES. Cant beat it without the manual that had a paper you had to put in water to get the password for something later in game.

The best one was Earthbound.

The differences were:

  • There was an anti piracy PSA at the beginning (like those FBI warnings everyone always skips)
  • The already hellish encounter rate was doubled. No big deal you could just grind through it all.
  • If you somehow got to the end, upon starting the final boss fight the game would freeze. When you rebooted the game all your save files were deleted

Yes.

They literally hired the guy who made the emulator. A rom dump of Clu Clu land Arcade version also had some technical details in it that proved all of their virtual console dumps came from internal archives and not pirates.

I still remember when Serebii reported on JP BW with a ROM (and mentioned an anti-piracy gimmick he initially thought was part of normal gameplay)Nintendo sent him a C&D notice when they caught wind and it scared him so badly that he hasnt done anything that could be construed as legally questionable since (beforehand, he used to do stuff like leak English names several months early).

They probably would've sent him a C&D regardless with how much stuff he was leaking. But yeah in (badly) pirated versions of BW they disabled gaining experience and a lot of people thought it was just a huge bug the devs didn't take out.

It was dumber than that. He would just repeatedly open and shut the gliding so you could only sputter around like a wing clipped chicken. The game was otherwise perfectly playable until you got to a part where you needed regular gliding to reach.

But the most legendary one was the Garry's mod unable to shade polygon normals.

https://www.techspot.com/news/43292-garrys-mod-developer-exposes-pirates-with-fake-error.html

tl;dr if you pirated Garry's mod it would throw an error with an error number that was actually your steam id and you got banned on both GMod forums and steam if you asked for support with that message.
