80/80

First heard about it.

I remember my teacher informed my class of it and I remember this girl having this horrified look on her face and her saying "Oh my God" and a few moments later she said "Why would someone do that?"

When I was hearing about the shooting everywhere, from the news to students at high school, I remember being nothing but confused at everyone's response, because I remember the Civil War in Syria was raging at the time, and I remember the death toll being something like 100000 civilian deaths. And given America's lack of a emotional response to such a death toll, I was initially confused by the country's response. Everyone was crying about the dead kids, and I'm just like "Well what about the dead kids in Syria?"

I live in Connecticut. I've visited the Sandy Hook area over the years. I've probably driven by that school before. Honestly, it just felt like any other school shooting. Tragic, sure, but no more remarkable than Virginia Tech or Columbine. I wasn't aware that it still captured peoples' attention outside CT, especially given all of the other mass shootings over the years.

Here we'll see newspaper headlines, have a moment of silence from our NPR affiliate station, etc, around the date. And there's still fallout as well. The father of one of the murdered students who started a non-profit dedicated to researching and stopping violence wound up killing himself last year. He left behind a wife and two other children.

The US's borderline-illegal drone program probably kills more kids in any given year than a decades' worth of school shootings, tbh. However, it doesn't have the emotional impact -- or the press -- as American children dying on American soil. Plus we don't have to wait for a brave whistleblower to step forward when a mass shooting happens.

On any given year, something horrible is happening somewhere else but every nation is going to care more about the horrible things happening in its borders.

This is a disgusting thing to say. The guy systematically murdered twenty children that were 6-7 years old in cold blood.

...every single school mass shooter "systematically murdered" multiple kids. Are you suggesting that these other victims' lives somehow matter less because they were a few years older? Because that's highly offensive, even by the standards of your usual shit. Columbine, Parkland, Virginia Tech, Sandy Hook, and the rest are all equally tragedies. Trying to compare and contrast is pretty fucked up.

You can highlight the rest to see your fallacious argument fall apart:

ie, I was discussing REACTIONS to the tragedies -- and even then I was technically addressing Deerzord's commentary about those reactions as opposed to raising the point myself -- not the relative merits of the tragedies. Those were all tragic murders that shouldn't have happened.

No, I clearly wasn't. Again, try reading sentences that come after and/or before your chosen sentence, as well as preceding and/or succeeding paragraphs. It's this crazy thing called "context."

I dont agree. A teenager dying in a car accident is a tragedy. A high school shooting where several students die is a tragedy and its worse. Twenty 6-7 year olds being methodically killed one at a time in front of each other is a tragedy and its much fucking worse.

If something like that just blends in to other tragedies you hear about then what the hell is wrong with your perception and where is your empathy

Are you pretending that the other school mass shootings weren't "methodical" executions for some reason? I have to ask for what reason you would do that? And I'm trying to think of even one school mass shooting that didn't involve kids being killed in front of each other (the other part of your argument) and drawing a blank, which makes your remark all the weirder. All of these school shootings -- and mass shootings in general -- are tragic. I'm not sure why you're arbitrarily trying to make weird contrasts like this is some kind of sick contest.

What the hell is wrong with your empathy and morals that you'd use a mass murder as a means of trolling somebody between your really weird pigeon-holing and transparent attempts to spin things. Are you unable to put aside your dislike of me for one fucking second, or do all of your awful actions have to be driven by that seeming hatred? -_-

I dont have much of an opinion of you one way or another nowadays, but I think you made a really disgusting and heartless post in this topic. If that strikes a nerve then maybe think about why that is, instead of trying to direct any frustration towards me.
