Are they arguing that we should hyper focus on random black people? I think there is a difference between places in history where the accomplishments of black people were purposely ignored due to racism and places where black people made up like 0.00001% of the active population.

This seems way too generalized.

In school I learned about how most of the cowboys were black and how Egypt/other Middle East countries are trying to erase Nubia and its history from existence. Also learned about the black Pharaohs of Nubia/Egypt.

Is it because they weren't paying attention?

How many students could actually say they read through their history textbooks?

The content is in there, you just have to read it.

Im guilty of that. History was by far the most boring subject for me, so I did the absolute minimum required to get by. I didnt care about on what date a war happened, who invented what, and especially not what color their skin was.

As someone who did pay attention, I can tell you that I had to purposefully seek it as an elective to learn about any non white history.

Even my world history class was eurocentric

If your school system's history textbook only included white history (Which I find unlikely. At the very least there should be a considerable amount about Native culture.) then I would suggest contacting the author and suggesting he add more black/native history into his next re-vision.

Either that or get in contact with the history department and make the suggestion of switching to a new history textbook.

Both of those things would accomplish a lot more than a tik-tok video. Of course, most people are just happy with seeing something that confirms what they think and patting themselves on the back for knowing it is enough. But it won't actually change anything.

This is such a staggering misunderstanding of the complaint here that it has to be intentional.

Why is that so unbelievable? American history textbooks are very heavily White-centric, with token mentions to the Civil Rights movement (and then, only MLK, Rosa Parks, and Malcolm X).

As someone who has read history textbooks, I have found most of the content mentioned in that video and a lot more.

Of course that is just my experience, perhaps there do exist history textbooks in use that only include white culture. If that is the case then we would be better served to get those books out of circulation than making a video about how the system is bad because it doesn't do everything for us while we do nothing.

Proclaiming "systemic racism" and doing nothing has become a problem. We are the system, if we want change we need to act to bring change. It won't just magically happen on its own.

I read my history and social studies books from cover to cover for fun. This is exactly how they were. The history of white men was primary/main history, and everything that involved anyone else was in special boxes off to the side or subsections of wider chapters. If you read those books, you'd think nothing important ever happened in Africa and that China has been mostly irrelevant to world history. There was a rotating list of like 7 black people who were mentioned by name in those books and half of them are who you quoted.

The basic history education I received was garbaje.

I have to wonder why people keep trying to divide our history. As in this is what whites accomplished or did, or this is what blacks accomplished or did?

And putting that aside even we have black history month dedicated specifically to just that. So idk what this vid is trying to accomplish. If test books dont have enough to say about (insert races here relevancy) and the history teacher is to lazy to just look it up himself and teach it then that's on him and the school.

I don't recall history teaching us of Edison. But I'd assume Latimer isn't remarked on for improving the bulb the same way several people aren't remarked on, both for improvement contributions and in general.
Hell, who invented the refrigerator? Didn't cover that far as I know.

Didn't learn about knights much if at all, kinda focused on American history, world history was very eurocentric admittedly but also vague. A couple wars mentioned, spice trade, opium war, then off to America and World Wars far as I remember.

But shit, there was a black Samurai too!
Wonder if Japanese schools teach about Edison and cowboys and knights?
Overall the message is right/nice, it's just delivered eh. Liked the Dove commercials messages more, but these aren't terrible.

Most people ITT were taught that Columbus was a savior of savages so it's weird to think that history books haven't been completely white washed. Mfs still say shit like "MLK protested the right way" and dont realize that 1. There were many other black civil rights leaders that paved the way through both non-violent and violent protesting. 2. People viewed MLK as a violent threat and a menace at the time. 3. THEY FUCKING KILLED HIM lmao

I'll explain why generalized videos like this on social media are potentially damaging.

The positive response:
Someone sees it on social media and says, "I agree" then gives it a thumbs up or like or whatever. And then does absolutley nothing to fix the situation, but still gets the reward of feeling better about themselves. They can now view themselves as good vs the evil of the world without actually do anything.

The negative response:
Someone sees the video and dislikes it for whatever reason (yes, there are more than one reason someone could dislike the video). They give it a thumbs down.

The positive response person sees this and thinks "Wow there is so much evil in the world. Don't worry though I will undo all that evil by agreeing with this video and giving it a thumbs up."

Now those people are natural enemies and still nothing gets accomplished.
