Heard about this like two years ago, even played a little bit of the demo, so I guess it finally came out. Honestly not really a fan of metroidvanias, maybe ill buy it, but I think i'll just end up not liking it that much.

Do you just not like platformers, or are metroidvanias too typically unstructured... I can understand both positions

I've been saying for YEARS that a Pokemon styled/themed Metroidvania would be absolutely amazing, but everyone always shot down the idea.

Probably unstructured, I kinda dislike running around from point to point looking for abilities like "okay I guess I gotta get some wings or rock smashing shit for this place, i'll check that way, whoops another block, guess i'll check out this way, oh dang, okay I need wings for that place, a laser or whatever for that second place and idk what for this place." Doesn't help I tend to take breaks from games often and switch to another so like I forget what the hell I was doing before.

Yup, unstructured - this is a major problem with Metroidvanias in general that many people overlook. This is one of the reasons why Super Metroid feels so much better than the later ones (other than maybe Metroid Prime) and why Salt&Sanctuary (not really a metroidvania but does have a few key movement items) and Hollow Knight feel so much better.

Neat.

I own this. Very good from the 20 minutes I played of it and that was in Early Access. I wanted to stream the game and get a first time reaction for it but I don't have the internet to stream anymore so it's been rotting in my backlog.

Looks interesting, but I tend to like my Metroidvania's more Metroid and less 'vaina if that makes sense. This looks like it goes in the opposite direction. So I will probably pass.

It's pretty neat that Sony is starting to get Pokemon-style games

First Nexomon and now this

Plus I like MV's too

Guacamelee is by far my favorite MV game and worth playing if you haven't

It's not really a metroidvania any more than Pokemon's HMs... it's pretty much just a pokemon platformer

ok, there may only be 100 monsters.... but the game is nuanced as heck and even has multiplayer

It might be the best 'pokemon' since pokemon... its technical stuff is even better than Siralim (probably due to being more balanced since Siralim is more about being OP with hax combos)

That kinda is the problem, its current "definition" (if it even has one) is different from what it started out as.

Originally it was just Symphony of the Night and its successors, as those were CastleVANIAs that incorporated progression elements from METROID. Which in the most simplified form means the original definition would be something like "game akin to Symphony of the Night, only problem is that phrase is highly subjective. At some point it became phrase "officially" used for any game with a Metroid like map progression, because I doubt Nintendo was going to allow for Metroid-like or Metroid-clone to become an actual genre.

I've been playing it on gamepass its fun though the pvp matchmaking is weird your just as likely to get a lvl 5 bug boy as you are gonna face of mt silver red.

Mostly positive? They have Overwhelmingly Positive for the latest 200 or so reviews, I would say less than 3% of games released on Steam hit that Overwhelmingly Positive because it requires nearly everyone to at least like the game.

If you like Pokemon and Metroidvania style games this seems to be a great mix of the two.

Given that type advantages here are less powerful than pokemon and that enemies are pretty much at your level unless you go to baby zones it would be practically unplayable if they didnt heal.

@Lokarin also its fine calling in a metroidvania rpg. It has a 2 axis map, hidden rooms, character upgrades for maneuvering, return exploration for special pickups, and has morph ball

I picked it up and it's pretty good so far but I'm still early in the game

The map is kinda confusing though and I hope you can eventually fast travel otherwise back-tracking will be a pain in the ass

just finished it - it's really good and fair and balanced

Also there's a secret boss from Siralim - what an unexpected crossover! He even uses the same moves he does in Siralim

I would argue only two of those are really needed for a Metroidvania, except it would still be missing aspects that actually separate a Metroidvania from Metroid-like.
