An elementary school student killed himself while in his distance learning class late Wednesday morning, the San Joaquin County Sheriffs Office confirmed. Deputies confirm the 11-year-old boy was in his Zoom class with his microphone and camera off when he took his own life. His sister, who was distance learning in another room, found him and alerted a neighbor and her teacher, who helped call authorities. The sheriffs office said deputies responded to the 300 block of Sterling Street in the community of Woodbridge just after 11 a.m. to investigate a reported shooting. At the scene, a young boy with a head injury was found. The boy was rushed to a nearby hospital with his parents by his side. He later died from his injuries.

Paul Warren is the special education director for the Lodi Unified School District. He oversees mental health services within the district. Sometimes we go through things that are temporary emotional experiences and with the support of family and other trained people we can get through those things. Its tragic. Everybodys has been impacted by this, Warren said. Renee Bond, a licensed clinical counselor, works directly with children. I think its really time as a society that we start investing in wellbeing and mental health, Bond said. The National Suicide Prevention Lifeline offers suggestions to help: ask for help, make a safety plan, and look for warning signs. Bond says there could be several warning signs someone is in trouble. Withdrawing is one of them. When you listen to them talking and theyre talking about hopelessness or nobody loves me. You know youre children better than anyone, trust yourself, Bond said.

So those two kids were doing their zoom classes without their parents home. Since she had to ask neighbor/teacher for help. Kinda sad but I understand people cant miss work to be home while schools are shut down.

Always lock up any firearms youre not currently carrying on your person. Especially with children in the house.

Presumably he would have just found another to kill himself, but the access to the firearm certainly made it easier.

Very sad and unfortunate.

This sucks. I'm so sorry for that family, the sister who had to find him like that, and most of all for him for being in a place where he felt the need to take his own life at such a young age, essentially still a baby. Heartbreaking :(

you'd think so, and the vast majority of people in the country agree, but if you listen to the NRA and republican politicians any form of gun control is anti-american communism.

They better be embarrassed and ashamed because how the hell did the kid know how to use a real gun, let alone get access to a real gun and ammo to be able turn it on himself and why would he even consider such a thing in the first place? They literally failed this kid as parents.

I can't imagine ever leaving my children in the house alone with a gun they could conceivably get their hands on.

Regardless, it sounds like no parent was home. That gun should have been locked up and the kid should not have been able to access it. Thats pure negligence and the parents should face charges for that. They need to stop letting that shit slide.

When I was in fifth grade, there was a kid I knew who accidentally killed his best friend. His dad just had a bunch of guns lying around and this 10/11 year old boy just took one, thinking it was unloaded, and pulled the trigger at his friend as some sort of joke. The dad and grandma went to jail and the kid went to some school for emotionally damaged kids. I found out years later that he died at age 19, no cause of death revealed.

Yeah, I have a couple stories like this sadly. "Never point a gun at something you don't plan to kill" is sadly unfamiliar to way too many people who have access to guns.
