I had a considerably worse time with 9 than 8. 15 was a mess when I played it but they added uh, "content" so maybe it's more acceptable now.

I love final fantasy 9 but 8 is def the winner here. It's such a unique game that covers all it's flaws.

15 is really only good after you played the others since it's basically a game about jamming to old final fantasy tunes while you drive a car through the desert

8 is so fucking horrible, not sure how it's winning.

BTW, I'm not sure how 9 would look on the PC, but 9 actually looks pretty good on the Xbone X with the upscaled resolution.

15 is at points one of the best in the series and at other points actually the worst. It's absolutely worth playing IMO but 8 and 9 have enough legacy at this point to be higher on your priority list.

I know 8's remaster is kind of fucked as far as its non-character model visuals and performance goes (unless this has been fixed since release) whereas 9 has some basic polish but can be combined with the Moguri Mod (if you're playing on PC) and be truly elevated to a definitive version.

i think 8 has the best setting of the three. The characters are believable but potentially frustrating. They're all messed up because the director watched neon genesis evangelion. one reason people dont like it is because it's easy to accidentally play the combat in a way that makes it unfun (i.e., spamming summons, drawing 300 of everything, forgetting to draw at least once from each enemy type are all traps). but if you avoid those traps, and avoid getting angry when the characters have personalities and are short-sighted, i think it's great

9 was explicitly a knee-jerk reaction against the 'emo' hybrid magipunk style of ff6, 7, and 8 and a reversion to elizabethan-style fantasy- everything is an homage to the NES games. in my opinion this was to its detriment. the combat is way too slow. i'd only play if there's an emulator-style fast-forward button. vivi is cool.

15's story is almost coherent and the controls are in that weird middle ground between rpg and action rpg that doesn't actually let you move in a fun way. i really like the idea/high-level pitch of a road trip but so much gets in the way of the fun

6 > 7 > 10 > 8 > 9 > 12 > 15 > 4 > 5 > 13 > NES

The weird thing with xbox game pass on PC is that it locks you out of the files on your own PC. It's creepy tbh.
So I have no idea if I can mod it.
