Don't really know how to word that correctly, but games that are similar to popular games but slightly different in their own way.

For me it was the Metabot(the right styled ones) games on the gba. I loved playing those more than pokemon if I am honest.

The later Saints Row games have been an incredible alternative to GTA which made the mistake of going all serious.

Kinda not so much seeing the connection between those franchises, but I could never make heads or tails of the gba games. They played kinda weird. It was a shame since I liked the franchise from the show and I thought the model kits were neat.

Final Fantasy Adventure wasn't a Final Fantasy game at all. Neither were the Final Fantasy Legend games. I liked all of these better than the real Final Fantasy games.

Not sure what counts for this, so...

Samurai Warriors and Dynasty Warriors Gundam have always been superior to the Dynasty Warriors mainline franchise
I've never been interested in the normal GDU vs. Brotherhood of Nod setting of Command & Conquer, but always loved the Red Alert alternate universe spin-off series
I enjoyed FF Tactics more than the "normal" FF games
I like Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity more than Breath of the Wild
I vastly prefer Bayonetta to DMC or God of War
Super Mario RPG was better than any of the platforming Mario games
Never had an interest in Persona or SMT, but Radiant Historia, another JRPG by Atlus, is one of my favorite games of all time
In the PS2/Xbox gen, I liked Shinobi and Nightshade/Kunoichi more than Ninja Gaiden

Oh yeah, I'll probably get flak for this, but speaking of mario, i'd put mario rpg, mario kart and mario party games for the snes/n64 above any of the platformers. I've never been that big on platformers, but I enjoy the hell out of local multiplayer games that aren't first person shooters.

Kinda agree but didnt mind gta going serious. Where saints row fucked up was going too far out. But 2 is probably favorite GTA style game. I wont even play 4 after hearing some of the shit about it

When I was younger I loved Star Trek Elite Forces. Also really liked Castlevania LoS, thought it was a way better origin to the Belmont's than the psx games. Unreal championship 2 was way better than it got treated.

Does warioland count in the sense it started off as basically a Mario game that evolved into its own thing? The first was my favorite but I enjoyed the others as well

I vastly prefer god eater. Granted I only played one monster Hunter and it was 3 I think. But compared to that one god eater is faster paced more story oriented and can have ai teammates that atleast heal you take some enemy attention away and revive you.

I've been playing through god eater 3 lately and I just don't understand how someone could like it more than MH. The quality difference is so vast in every area outside of story I guess which still isn't good for god eater.

As for me, I'm not sure. I actually like FFTA more than FFT. The story of FFTA is trash and laws are a horrible abomination but I felt like everything else was a lot better. Both games are great though.

Oh, this probably doesn't count but I liked zestiria better than berseria. Zestiria isn't a spinoff by any means though.

Could apply to either.
But in the case of Age of Calamity, it's in the BotW universe w/ its characters and story. So it's a valid comparison. I like that it lacks all of the time wasting bs and giant empty swaths of traversal that BotW had. Yeah, you need to grind for stuff sometimes for quests, but at least you're still playing and doing stuff then. Not like...sneaking up on some bushes to catch some bugs or setting up camp to shoot horns off of some dragon over and over. And the combat in general is way more fun. And no freaking weapon breaking!!!
So yeah, AoC gives me the BotW setting and characters, and even lets me play as all of them instead of just Link, and with not of the stupid crap I hate.

Other than Monster Hunter World, the quality of life enhancements in God Eater are generally better. Not having to go through 10-12 loading screens on a single map, Healing doesn't take 5 years. The combat is a lot more forgiving and faster paced. Armor skills aren't tied to appearance. Your AI teammates are surprisingly decent. The high rank quests where the "true game" begins isn't locked behind 60-80 hours of gameplay where I'm already burnt out on the game. Things like that.

All of this leads to the game being so spammy and easy though. You spend like 90% of the fights just mashing buttons on the enemies. If you get hit, oh well, pop healing in like 0.1 seconds and it's like it never happened. Theres also only like 10 enemies with some elemental variants and a lot of them seem to have like 3-4 attacks total. Idk, it just feels so shallow compared to MH. I also really despise having to continually devour to keep burst. Feels so tedious. It'd be like having to sharpen in MH every 15 seconds.

Eh, you've always been able to work through Low and High Rank relatively quickly if all you wanna do is "get to the hard stuff".

Fair point and I can agree with that. It's that simplicity I like though.

Burst I wholeheartedly agree with. It doesn't feel like it has as much impact as it should and maintaining it is a chore.

To be fair I'm playing like the lamest spammiest style. Using biting edge with halo assault. Just transform and mash square. It just does too much damage. Amazed how many things get straight staggerlocked and die in one stam bar. Granted you can't block outside of shield dive or devour like that so you kinda end up just mashing and nothing else.

no because gameplaywise they're nothing alike. it's not "slightly different in its own way" from botw because it's massively different from botw, it's "slightly different in its own way" from dynasty warriors games because it just has a botw setting and paint job

it's like comparing dynasty warriors gundam and the gundam vs games because all they share is gundam

MH world has AI team mates? Might have to give MH another chance then. I dont do online games unless I have a real life friend to play with.
