Holy shit what
Nice, wonder what led to this change of heart, but it's good

Now let Nintendo/Game Freak realize that it's been forever since the Porygon accident and let it come back

The thing is, I really shouldn't care about this, because I don't play the TCG and honestly didn't even notice Kadabra was not in the anime for years
But I do, because it's one of the most infamous gaming trivia finally being put to rest (like Mother 3 being localized, Half Life 3 happening, L is Real etc)

Reminder that Porygon literally was not involved in the incident that got "the Porygon episode" banned.

He realized that he had crossed the threshold where this was now the thing he was most famous for.

I've never heard about this. Who is this guy and why is he responsible for a Pokmon card being banned?

He does spoon tricks and claimed that Kadabra was a rip-off of him.

he was a somewhat famous psychic and one of his main tricks was bending spoons. Kadabras Japanese name is a pun on his name

Ah ok, I was about to say wtf how the fuck he gonna claim that but if the name of the Mon was based on him, it's kinda hard to argue in favor of Gamefreak lol

It's quit obvious it was intended by Gamefreak (Abra and Alakazam Japanese names are references to famous magicians too) - the only question is - is it against the law?
Couldn't find if there was a rulling, seems like the case was on hiatus forever and the Pokemon Company preferred to play it safe

From what I heard, the specific card that set him off was "Dark Kadabra" in the Team Rocket set from 2000, the Japanese name of which was literally "Bad (as in evil) Urigeller."

Kadabra also hasn't appeared in the anime since the early 00s either.

In the US Gellers claims definitely wouldnt hold up in court. I guess they settled so it never actually got that far, but Im curious as to whether he would have had a chance in Japan or some other country or if Nintendo knew they would win but just didnt want the headache.

Oh I guess looking at your Bulbapedia link he probably sued in the UK since the amount is quoted in pounds?

I know they have weaker speech rights than the US, but it would be pretty silly if this wasnt protected as parody.

Abra and Alakazam cards have continued to be printed, despite the fact that this makes it impossible to play Alakazam cards in matches that prevent the use of older cards without a card that specifically allows evolved Pokmon to be played or the use of the card Rare Candy, which allows the player's Basic Pokmon in play to evolve into the Stage 2 form without the use of a Stage One Pokmon. However, the only Abra card released after Skyridge, in Mysterious Treasures, has an attack that allows it to evolve directly into Alakazam, skipping the Kadabra stage. Any Alakazam cards printed since were Basic Pokmon that didn't need to evolve from anything.

I dunno, you make a living as a professional fraud by lying about having psychic powers, and suddenly you're associated with evil!
