It depends on your metric of ruined. Depp is still a multi-millionaire who will get work, but he's been royally fucked up the ass regardless.

The only ones I am aware of are celebrities charged with sexual assault, and blue collar guys who got caught going on a racist tirade on someone's phone.

I'm sure there are some exceptions. I don't agree with damning people about the stupid shit they said on twitter 10 years ago, unless they're still saying it.

Big and small examples abound. News anchors losing their jobs over allegations, people getting fired for social media posts, etc.

Just look at James Gunn. He was removed as director for GotG 3 over some edgy social media jokes from several years ago. It might not "ruin somebody's life" if they're as well off as he is, but if it can happen to James Gunn, it can happen to you or me, too.

Losing the company you created is a pretty big deal.

If your metric is "who has had their life ruined, FAMOUS PEOPLE EXAMPLES ONLY" and your defense is "yeah but they are still rich/famous" then you are painting yourself into a corner. Just about everybody rich is going to be rich even when shit happens to them.

It happens a lot to small people too, but it doesn't get as much coverage.

You can't compare going from where you are (nowhere) to where he is (somewhere but impaired) to the dynamics of what happened.

He was super successful and recruited and for a couple years his career got put on pause for jokes. LITERAL WORDS.

That's the problem with cancel culture. The wrong jokes, the wrong words, cost you millions. Or rather they cost talented people millions.

It's still overall a blip on his career that lasted a couple years, plus there had to be massive petitions. Without those who knows what would've happened.

People act like cancel culture isn't real when it's effects are mitigated by others trying to fight back against the bullshit. But just because a large part of society comes out and fights the cancel culture fire, doesn't mean the fire wasn't there in the first place.

The question is who's life/career was ruined. James Gunn's wasn't, so yes he's a very bad example to use here. A "blip" is literally a very small thing.

Cancel culture is real absolutely. People take it too far plenty of times.
But holding people responsible for their actions is the right thing to do. If you can't see the nuance in that you're just as bad as those looking for anything minor to rage about.

So if someone said something stupid ten years ago they should be fired from their job today?

Holding people responsible for actions is something I fully support.

Holding people responsible for words they said that you don't like is asinine. Unless they hunted you down and shoved those words in your face, you are perfectly free to not ingest words that offend you. It's the Ricky Gervais guitar lessons joke:

Maybe, depends on their job and what they said.

Words are actions.
Canceling Roseanne for being a screeching racist or Joanne Rowling for being transphobic is responsible consumerism. Public figures especially should be cognizant of their words as they have such a wider reach.

Like I said, if you can't understand the nuance between holding people responsible for deplorable stuff they've said and done and canceling someone for some shock humor that missed the mark (though, there is a line, somewhere) - you're just as responsible for cancel culture as those that fall into it.

Nope, all of these prominent examples aren't of people having their lives ruined, but of people in really competitive industries no longer having an incredibly rare and coveted spot within it, if even that sticks.

Like that milo yiannopolous guy or whatever. His life ain't ruined just because he can't make money touring college campuses trolling libs or writing up some loq iq garbage on some vaguely mainstream publication. That's nonsense. Idk what your parents did but my dad installed cubicles. I'm sure milo could go do that, too. That's not a ruined life, if you think so you need to take a step back and breathe
