The key system itself wasn't so bad. Making it so that you only unlock the difficulty options after you beat the game was the dumb idea there.

I have finally read all the posts in this topic.

Eesh. I was actually thinking about doing a randomized nuzlocke run of one of these games. Was thinking about Black/White. Or doing a wondertrade nuzlocke of X/Y but I feel like I wouldn't get anything good from that.

But to add to this topic, I think what disappoints me about the progression is that we're still fighting a bunch of gym leaders and then beating the Elite Four at the end. Which, I kinda get it. It's an easy progression. But they couldn't at least change something up with that?

Even if you gave it a flavor of a region being run entirely by Team Rocket or something and then you get a Pokemon and you have to figure your way through 'leaders' of Team Rocket to help liberate cities until you finally have to fight your way through an 'Elite Four' that promises to do something terrible to the region unless you surrender yourself.

Just spitballing here, and I get why they actually do the "Wow, I want to become a Pokemon trainer and be the bestest there ever was!" story each game, because every Pokemon game is a kid's first Pokemon game. I get it. You have a lot riding on it. Hell, you change the formula and then you have to change the anime too at this point.

But as someone who played and beat the first two gens to completion, the lack of real change to the story never really hooked me to try playing many others. It really does feel like they aren't making the series for long time fans and are just doing it to dig their hooks into a new, young audience each time.

I think it would be cool if next gen they removed Gym Leader typings and the gym leaders just used everything. 6 Pokemon for each of them and they can be any type at all. GameFreak would never do it though.
What would be cool would be if the themed Gym Leaders actually had any synergy. I played a hardmode Emerald romhack and jeez, those gym leaders could fuck you up. Even something as simple as having the opening Pokemon have Sand Stream/Snow Warning and some of the others have Sand Veil/Snow Cloak can really mess with you. There's so many weather and terrain effects that would be favorable to monotype teams

Wait the anime doesn't just follow whatever gen they're on now? Please elaborate, because I'm kind of curious how they changed it.

In his Gym Battle, yes. In his other battles he used three different weathers and didn't utilize any of them.

Ash and new friend Goh are research fellows for a lab in Kanto and travel all over the known regions.

It's actually a bit silly how little focus Gen VIII is getting in the anime so far. Ash doesn't have any of the starters (Goh has two of them), and the only Galar Pokemon he has on his team is a Gen I regional variant. They did just do the Sw/Sh legendary plotline over a four-episode arc though.

It's a mess. I only saw 15 episodes but it goes like -
"Hey let's go to Kanto!"
-Teleport to Kanto-
Spend the entire episode in Kanto doing things

Then next episode "Hey let's go to Johto"
-teleprot to Johto-

Repeat for the rest of the regions

Because that's actually what the games are for. Gen II is pretty much the only Gen made where people who played Gen I were kept in mind as target audience. Everything after that is purely made for people who've never played Pokemon before.

Also, on a basic level I like HMs. It makes it worthwhile to explore and do backtracking, not necessarily to progress but just to find cool new stuff. I think Gen III and especially Gen IV went way overboard with it though (wtf were they thinking with Defog).

One of the things I dislike is how shallow the battle system is in the main story mode, but then you get your ass handed to you once do post-game because then the game levels itself up a bit, but which is still nothing compared to actual competitive teams. And it's especially puzzling in the sense that I don't think any of the games ever really teach you about EVs and egg moves and all that other stuff, and without the internet you'd just be boned.

On that note (difficulty), I'm also annoyed at the lack of variety in trainer Pokemon. Earlier gens suffer from this the most I feel, when you have people around gym 5 or 7 still popping up with Pidgeotto and Spearow and it's like blah.

This is why I was annoyed at ORAS reverting Tate and Liza to their original shitty "please kill me" team even though Emerald made them way more interesting by adding Xatu and an Earthquake spamming Claydol on a team where everything is immune to ground.

Lots of the things here would be very great to be without but are probably not the worst things.

The worst thing is probably that it has become more important to release new games consistantly. I'd happily trade that for some quality and games that feel more finished. Third versions were a fix to this. Ruby and Sapphire were lackluster, but Emerald was brilliant. Diamond and Pearl were bad but Platinum is top tier. It shows how much better games we could've gotten if they've given themselves a bit more time to work. I don't mind that they've scrapped third versions in itself because it's just milking more money out of what's almost the same thing, but now it just means that some regions have no good version that's nice going back to. Ideally, they'd just spent a year longer on the games. In particular, the first games for each console. It's clear that GameFreak needs time to adapt to a new console every time and they never give that to themselves.

Another contender is probably lying about the workload of bringing every Pokemon back for SS. It is what it is that they removed things to begin with, but blatantly lying about having to create them from scratch when they reused 3DS models was pretty horrible and stupid. It's hard to believe releasing the rest as DLC wasn't the plan to begin with.

This can be turned off in a few seconds. Like, if this can be considered a thing RBY does better, then yes, even minimal things like steel type existing absolutely counts in FRLG's favor too.
