I was thinking about this when talking with a buddy about how much I hated HMs in Pokemon games. They felt like the biggest waste to me. He mentioned that they changed that in the new gen.

To a lesser degree, I hated Trade evolutions too.

But I was wondering what people who play more Pokey than me also didn't like about the series.

This was touched upon in the last topic where ppl complained about Pokmon designs, but I think a huge issue is not the designs of the Pokmon themselves but rather the artists moving away from making Pokmon more like wild animals and more like fun anime mascots to make them more marketable

gen 1 and 2 sprites and art were drawn to look like the Pokmon were wild animals being sketched in a field journal or candidly caught on camera which overall I think made them way more appealing, cool and real.

Probably that they still haven't done a story with real guts yet

I want a game where the evil team already took over and it's dark and gloomy and you rebel and they seem... formidable and overwhelming

I'm not saying I want super dark and edgy, just a little darker, a little edgier.

Also give me a hard difficulty.

Legendaries, or at least how they handle them. There's far too many mythicals for how exclusive they are. Plus I hate the whole concept of box legendaries. It's so stupid that if you want both of them you essentially need to have two playthroughs. Crown Tundra amplified this with Spectrier/Glastrier and the new Regis and for like no decent reason.

Also Dynamax is really dumb. They should've just kept Mega Evolutions.

Team rocket took over saffron city in RBY but they were just kinda there, you didn't even really see scared citizens or anything it was just "yes they are here" until "no they are not"

Which I guess is fine considering how old RBY is but now gamefreak really has no excuse. Can anyone tell me what team flares motivation was? Or the name of their leader?

Outside of specific things in specific games, the worst concept that currently exists in generation 8 is version-exclusive music. Previously they only did version exclusive things like Pokemon or items, which you can easily trade for. But music is entirely locked in the actual game that you're playing, and there is no way to get the missing songs in your file at all, other than hacking.

Was Colosseum like that? I didn't get very far but it seemed a little darker and edgier at least.

Difficulty kinda annoys me- usually it's pretty easy (especially later on) but sometimes you get weird spikes of difficulty (especially earlier on)

They keep coming up with cool ideas in one generation and ditching them in the next, often with something else similar.

It's starting to feel kinda soulless and tired (which, after decades, fair I guess)

I think my main problem with Pokmon is just how little its changed since the beginning, and I think Pokemon being the most valuable franchise in the world compounds that problem into me really resenting a lot of the newer games, especially SwSh cuz you really expect me to now start paying $60 for the same shit that they've been pumping out for 20 years?

As a kid I remember everyone romanticized the idea of a mainline Pokmon game on console and we finally get one and its mediocre at best. You truly cannot make a bad mainline Pokmon game cuz of the winning formula but its heartbreaking yo see that gamefreak really doesn't care enough to improve cuz the shit sells like crazy no matter what and why risk throwing that away by doing literally anything different (despite like I said earlier that this shit will sell no matter what so you might as well "risk" doing something new)

earlier gens:
HMs - definitely the worst in first games because you had to manually go to the menu, select your Pokemon, then use every time. Also, there was no Move Deleter so if you taught your Zapdos Flash or something, it's there forever. Gradually changed to make it more tolerable like adding the move deleter, allowing you to access the HM from world screen, making some areas with necessary HM usage to be optional, etc. before removing them altogether in gen 7 (iirc).

Single-use TMs - this was hands-down the worst thing about Pokemon games for me because I liked using multiple Pokemon and with single-use TMs it meant that if you wanted to use a below-average Pokemon for fun, you wouldn't be able to have "best" versions of your good ones. like obviously everyone who could learn Earthquake would want it but because it's a single-use TM, but if I taught it to my Arbok, that means my Nidoking could never get it. Breeding in later gens would somewaht help with this but that meant you still had to plan out breeding charts to make sure everyone was in compatible egg groups, etc. so i'll always love Gen V for introducing reusable ATMs.

forced bloated cutscene/story direction - while a bunch of the older complaints have been addressed in newer games, this is one issue where it's primarily with the newer games. like if you wanted to reset for starter nature, you would have to sit through like five minutes of stupid cutscene bullshit every time. like i don't relaly give a fuck abou tthis girl and her stupid bag pokemon. who gives a shit. let me skip it. your "rivals" getting lamer is also a thing, like how in one of the later ones they don't even reach the final form for their starter.

oh and how Pokemon following you around didn't return after HGSS until Let's Go

i have more complaints but they've mostly been addressed by later games like making breeding easier, making natures & IVs more controllable, etc.

the best changes though are on-screen wild encounters and reusable TMs for sure.

the additions to the story in later gens felt totally unwelcome. the sketched nature of the first games felt appropriate for the poor development and dialogue, but the more was added, the more it highlighted how pointless the story was. at least in 4 and 5.

At this point it's definitely the general lack of care/effort from Gamefreak. I barley get the sense that they even want to make these games anymore beyond the bare minimum. Feels like the games would benefit enormously from being outsourced to a studio that would actually be excited to see what they could do with it.

I think the lack of meaningful postgame content in later installments is the real kicker. They had such a good thing going with the Battle Frontier, and then dropped it because they (SpongeBob voice) don't FeEeEeEl like it.

In general, that kind of complacency is a huge problem for the series. As Zen noted, the Pokemon formula is so uniquely strong and addictive that a truly bad mainline Pokemon game can't exist unless it's actually broken or something. Game Freak has realized this for years and sees it as their ticket to "being above" things like effort and adaptation to the modern video game zeitgeist. Nonetheless, things like the dreadful graphics of Gen 8 and the terrible storylines could more readily be laughed off as "quaint" if they got their postgame act together again.

Some other things:

-The online experiences are deeply flawed. Gen 8 has this ridiculous "stamp system" for joining online activities that I seriously can't believe exists in a current-gen game.
-The GBA titles had dreadful music. Those dinky-ass trumpets, I swear...
-A refusal to commit to new features. Many compelling features like the Pokeathlon (HeartGold/SoulSilver) or the underground (Diamond/Pearl) are unceremoniously dropped after one installment. I think the intent is to keep each generation "unique" and therefore safe from total obsolescence, but really, it just feels needlessly regressive.
-This isn't really the fault of the developers, but man oh man do the "competitive players" tend to be fucking insufferable.

Lots of stuff I'd mention has already been talked about, so here's something very specific for me.

The games need a real mass release option. Home lets you release 100 at a time before you have to save and exit but when you're shiny breeding that's a drop in the bucket.

I also think they should make each Pokemon have maybe 5 or 10 shiny color variations instead of just one shiny. Maybe make some rarer than others, maybe make some only available through breeding and others through wild catches. Shinies, while still rare, are way easier to get now and I think something like this would be a good shakeup.

The IV checker needs to be available from the beginning of the game.

Bellossom should have been changed to Grass/Fairy when that type was introduced.

Hoo boy, you're lucky you didn't have to deal with this shit firsthand. In theory, when you connect to Sword/Shield's online hub, you receive a list of "stamps" that periodically refreshes. These stamps contain requests to battle other players, join Max Raids, etc. You can join one of these tasks or send out a stamp yourself.

In reality, it's broken as all unholy hell. The stamps take eternity and a week to refresh normally, so you have to toggle your own stamp request on and off like a damn fool in order to get the stamp list to refresh. To make matters worse, the stamps you receive are generally outdated, so trying to join another player's task typically results in an error message.

As you can imagine, online raids for desirable Pokemon are basically wars of attrition. Not against the Pokemon themselves, but against the fucking stamp system and all the players trying to bum-rush each stamp at once.

Removing good features (Poketch, DexNav, etc)

I think this is the biggest thing. Pokemon doesn't build off itself. Which, ideally, should mean we're getting new fresh ideas every gen but in practice it means we get the same ideas but incompatible with the past gen (mega evolutions, z moves, and dynamax)

Also, the tutorials, and the way the game painfully slows to a halt to deliver ANY information is a huge flaw. Lots of games have interesting ways to get around this nowadays but pokemon seems to get worse with every gen.

I also don't think "they're the same game" is that big of a problem. Pokemon red/blue can be replayed for eternity without getting old.
