Apparently, them planning on using Slippi (a mod that allows rollback online for emulated versions of Melee) was what did them in.

EDIT: Statement from Nintendo:

And its made worse by the fact that Nintendo's Japanese, so no doubt their infrastructure is set up where all the top directors pretty much are seen as gods, so there's no chance of any younger, less stubborn and more in touch with what fans are actually asking for employees shaking things up.

What I find hilarious about Nintendo's concern over pirated copies of Melee is that they don't sell Melee in any shape or form anymore, and hasn't for more than a decade. They get literally no money from the second-hand market that's the only place for people to purchase Melee. They have also not shown any plans to rerelease Melee either.

What do they expect?

people were kinda memeing about it but i actually wonder how nintendo feels about Slippi's infinitely better online compared to Ultimate's. if there's a large-scale tournament basically flaunting its superior online via emulation, you could argue that it might affect their bottom line by pulling people away, no matter how small a number, from their game they currently do profit from.

of course the proper response i'd argue would be that nintendo actually make their online functional to offer a better product, but we all know that won't happen. it's basically the same for all emulation. if nintendo doesn't like it so much, how about releasing your old games and putting more effort into it than guys doing it for fucking free?

I mean, Slippi does have a bit of a unfair advantage since it's usually played on Ethernet connections, which naturally offer a much more stable experience than wifi, but then again, I haven't heard much good about ethernet-wired Switches, either (probably because the vast majority of online players are playing on wifi).

I do wish Nintendo would actually stop BSing around and move into the 21st century when it comes to online. The Switch itself is a number of steps backwards compared to the Wii U, the 3DS, and even the Wii in that regard, and the fact that we have to pay for it now is inexcusable with how bad it is.

Unfortunately, as mentioned, Nintendo likely has too many old suits with too much power holding things back.

Smash Ultimate online has 5 frames of delay in ideal conditions (basically 2 ethernet switches right next to each other). I believe this was improved by around a frame with that one update to online. The game has 7 frames of input lag offline, so you're looking at 11 frames of input lag under ideal conditions. And rarely are there ideal conditions lol.

Also having more people in a lobby is known to cause additional lag. Here was the original source of the 5 frame figure that's thrown around.

If they had only complied, I don't think this would've happened. They could've had the same situation, cancelling the tourney, but all the negativity on Nintendo instead of them.

They should've expected nintendo to throw a C&D.

In any case, while I don't agree with this, not much can be done.

Nintendo literally downloaded roms off of piracy websites to repackage them for VC. Dataminers found the dumper group headers in the VC versions.

How is downloading a rom off a website not piracy?

i still think the best way to fix ultimate's online is to fix the game's native input lag. even offline it's the least responsive smash game by a fair margin. i remember playing on smash 4 3DS online via wi-fi and it was far better, and i put hundreds of hours into it, and as it turns out sm4sh 3DS is one of the most responsive games in the series.

the problem is i imagine they can't really do it. getting ultimate to run at a constant 60 FPS with all the shit rendering on screen must have been tough enough already. it would have been really nice to be able to have the option to adjust graphical fidelity and other performance options for sticklers like me who are really huge on responsiveness, but i'd also be curious how the alleged new switch model runs the game and if it could reduce native lag.

Yeah, that's the problem.

With a console that brought us Breath of the Wild, Super Mario Odyssey, and FE Three Houses, people expected Pokemon to follow suit in providing a more ground-breaking experience for the series.

Instead, we got business as usual with an even worse postgame than before, an even easier game than ever, little to no dungeons and exploration, outright-removed Pokemon, and some of the worst connectivity features in a game ever.

I wouldn't say business as usual at ALL. The wild area(and the DLC areas) were fantastic. The story was good and had some interesting bits( the final boss fight is the most unique in the series ). It had a LOT of good going for it. If they add in the rest of the Pokemon, beef up the engine a little bit, and add in a lot more QoL features...it'll be the best the series has ever been.

Hell, if you just want QoL features, this Pokemon game is the easiest to:

- Max level Pokemon
- Max EV Pokemon
- Max IV Pokemon
- Catch any legendary the series has ever had(with the Crown Tundra DLC)
- Keep your entire party(you don't need any HMs or HM slaves in the whole game)
- Egg breed
- Shiny breed
- You can now freely switch between natures, and abilities(even hidden abilities in crown tundra!)

On top if all that, I think the post-game is great. Dynamax adventures and raids, as well as PvP is always fun. I've been playing raids for a good amount of time at this point.

In terms of mechanics, this game has some of the best stuff. I think it's got so much potential. Bringing in some of the old stuff(Megas, Z-moves, etc) would HEAVILY enhance the game.

It's on the precipice of greatness.

Looks like all the Slippi tournament footage has been deleted off twitch. I bet Nintendo takes it a step further and forced everyone to stop playing Slippi on Twitch and YouTube. This is going to kill Melee when they cant even play the game with other people because of the pandemic.

I have heard that Emulators are legal, and have won several court cases in the US? Is there any truth to that?

It'll catch up eventually. The gap between profits between Nintendo and Sony/Microsoft/PC is astounding. Nintendo is also losing the youth demographic exponentially. They only can make their money off of vidya boomers, and they are starting to take notice of their anti-consumer bullshit.

I disagree. Wormholes are a chore, and far more limiting. Dynamax, you just have to ask or use a community and you'll find the Pokemon you want. EVs and IVs, maybe? But none of it matches up to how piss easy it is now. Hell, you can do one Blissey/Audino raid and use the rare candy from that, stuff it in the cram-o-matic, and get a gold bottle cap which will instantly max out every IV. Get 7 armorite ore, head on over to diggin pa, then use the watts from him to buy yourself luxury balls. Sell those, and you can probably max out multiple Pokemon EVs.
