244: ERRA - BREACH:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hK8cjJ8kv8I

Nominator: @BlackDra90n (15/21)
Source: Dra90ns extra songs (3/7)

Initial Score: 54.21 [#318]
Revised Score: 67.71 [#223]
Final Score: 67.70 [#244]

(First Thoughts: I like the pretty, quieter parts. Unfortunately half the song is metal screaming that gets in the way. I mean, I guess I kinda like the contrast, but... well Id rather just have the parts I like.)

Listen to the part starting at around 2:36. Its still metal, but like an easy-listening metal (in comparison to other songs, including several parts of this song itself) and followed by a quite nice instrumental section.

The rest of the song is alright, there are a lot of metal songs I like less than it and I can see the contrasting parts of the song being interesting, but those sections just dont appeal to me as much.

[Final Thoughts: Great instrumental sections, very nice choruses, pretty good lyrics (I cant think of any specific line I want to praise, but I do like it)... quite well done, even if Im not 100% sold on the genre yet.]

242 [TIE]: FISHBONE - SUNLESS SATURDAY:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0B61XAN2Ujw

Nominator: DoctorJimmy133 (6/27)
Source: Docs Extra Songs (5/7)

Initial Score: 72.34 [#94]
Revised Score: 68.31 [#218]
Final Score: 67.80 [#242]

(First Thoughts: Verse 4s lyrics are about what I was looking for:

I see the helpless and i see the insane
I see a pauper singing in the pouring rain
I see the means of help elude us again
I think the sun will never visit me again

Sad, but not overwhelmingly sad. But the song is a bit too energetic for me to really get into. Not that I want it to be a somber funeral march, but...less energetic either way.)

Yeah, yeah, lyrical dissonance, I get it. I have nothing against that in generalDoctor My Eyes is still one of my favorite songs of all timebut its not working for me on this track. I prefer my lyrics about TAINTED SOULS not be paired with an upbeat, headbanging...whatever music this is.

Very nice lyrics and I obviously like the song, but Im not sold on the genre or the band themselves at the moment.

[Final Thoughts: Another very good attempt.]

242 [TIE]: MASAFUMI TAKADA - PUNISHMENT:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1iBOUdZacB4&list=PLLmUcHIAJVw_GCWsy10Bv4-rtr6XDQfSU&index=19

Nominator: DoctorJimmy133 (5/27)
Source: Crypt, Dangan (1/20)

Initial Score: 49.49 [#430]
Revised Score: 48.34 [#456]
Final Score: 67.80 [#242]

(First Thoughts: Not very punishing, is it.

...that wasnt a question, it just isnt punishing.)

Something about the vocalizations on this track are reminding me of Art of Noises Paranomia:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WTN1WsUCyQc

It takes a while to get to it, but once you get to the Paranomia Chorus, theres some background vocalizations that I find similar. Its not a bad thing to remind me of! Ive had an on-and-off again obsession with the normal version of Paranomia (which wasnt linked because the oddness of the Danganronpa soundtrack pairs better with...whatever the extended version of Paranomia is) so its kinda neat to think about.

rave.dj/zotfvrfZjygEcQ

They also go really well when mashed together. Like, neither song loses anything in the transition? Its kinda freaky how well that actually works.

[Not-Quite-Final Thoughts: This Rave.DJ link survives! Punishment of Noise Paranomia Extended Mix Hq can be viewed by all! I know its a coincidence, but I swear those two songs were meant for each other. And as nonsensical as it is, this mashup has resulted in me actually liking the original! I mean, I prefer them thrown together, but this is speaking to me now. Going to bring this up to the low 60s.]

[Later: ...Maybe high 60s? Its completely wrong for my opinion to be so influenced by the mashup, but now that I perceive this as being the missing backing track of Paranomia, Im getting really into it... like Im tempted to jump the score all the way up to 70 points, but I think I want to see how this feels at around... 67-ish points for a bit?]

[Final Thoughts: Fun song. At least now that its permanently associated with Paranomia in my mind. ]

Kill Command: 60.63 [#322]
Class Trial (Future): 66.45 [#263]
Punishment: 67.80 [#242]

Average Score: 47.655

I typod your username as DoctorJimmmy133 on Wonderful Deads elimination and it took me forever to find where that song went... kept Ctrl+Fs Jimmy on every page searching for your eliminations to count them and kept winding up with only 19 Necro-Cryptid-Whatsit songs being eliminated.

While its a subpar average, the album was much better than Id expected. Truthfully, since I havent liked anything from Danganronpas OST or Necrodancers, this was probably the album I was least looking forward to listening to, but it actually had three songs that I likeand an additional seven songs that I at least liked parts of. And I kinda love that weird, Rave.DJ mashup of Punishment & Paranoia Extended Mix, so that was fun.

So... definitely something I ultimately enjoyed my time with, even if the final average is fairly low. At least the average is higher than Piano Operas?

241: STURGILL SIMPSON - SING ALONG:

https://open.spotify.com/track/0JwtuqKYYCA1iJ5cubotGW

Nominator: Xeybozn (4/20)
Source: Sound and Fury (2/10)

Initial Score: 72.15 [#100]
Revised Score: 49.88 [#442]
Final Score: 67.85 [#241]

(First Thoughts: Pretty solid track. I like how harsh the instruments in the background sound.)

The instrumentation is still quality, but looking back, if I have nothing positive to say about the singing or the lyrics then I dont think I actually liked the song much. The repeated refrains of I cant go on living alone now that youre gone just makes this feel like any typical breakup song...

...well I do like a lot of breakup songs (actually, most of what Ive been listening to lately falls into that category), so that cant be it. Something about this song bothers me though and I actively dont want to listen to it tonight. Still, I like the backing music and kinda wish this were an instrumental.

[Not-Quite-Final Thoughts: I still cant figure out why this song had such a very high score to start with, nor why I was bothered by it the second time. At least Im back to slightly liking it at least? Going to try the early-to-mid 50s.]

[Still Not Final: Ehh... low 60s for this, probably? It hits a different tier every time I listen to it and I dont know how to properly reflect that.]

[Final Thoughts: High 60s. Im back to liking it almost as much as the first time around.]

240: THE WEEKND - THE KNOWING:

https://open.spotify.com/track/6AirEKLAv80bFaIDKpMi7I

Nominator: Player_0 (8/30)

Initial Score: 61.24 [#213]
Revised Score: 74.82 [#163]
Final Score: 67.93 [#240]

(First Thoughts: I actually kinda like this one. I shouldnt, considering literally everything about it, but this... at least proves that some music on this album isnt bad.)

Per usual, the lyrics still are not for me, but there arent any specific lyrics here that I actively hate. It makes it much easier to get drawn into how powerful his vocal performance is and actually really like this song.

Though... yeah, youd have to change both verses of the song to get this into I love it territory. Still, quite a good song, especially considering the album it came from.

[Final Thoughts: A side-effect of me learning to like so many other songs on the album is that now I kinda like this one less by comparison. I obviously still like it and it was probably one of the easier songs on the album to get into, but Im not as wild about it as I was the second time around.

...Though still more into it than the first time.]

===============

This marks the start of another sub-tier; I kinda feel like the 68.00~68.99 songs are a decided step above those below them, with the 69 point songs being another sub-tier above that... but again not a very good way of illustrating that with current tiers... so its more a symbolic thing than an actual tier...

(note to self: Use thousand point scale at the end of 2021 topic.

...I dont even know if Im being sarcastic right now.)

...but still, the jump coming up tomorrow is notable to me, so just pretend its significant.

Dang. Well, I knew I must have had a bit of a streak coming at some point.

Old Haunt dropping is the big blow. That's my #1 or #2 TDH song depending on what kind of mood I'm in, along with being one of my overall 10 favorite songs of all time. The chorus is an obvious highlight, as you mentioned, but the real standout part to me is the "Wake Up" section at the end. Casey Crescenzo has some really awesome vocal performances across his substantial catalogue, but something about the singing in this track has always just hit exactly right with me, especially during that big swelling WAKE UUUUP. Hearing it live on the Act IV tour nearly brought a tear to my eye.

The lyrics being a weak point for someone who's not really connected to the story makes sense, though. I love them chiefly because of what comes later in the album. This is the first time that Hunter shows even a tiny semblance of self-awareness in actually trying to analyze all the tragedy that seems to follow him, and then by the end of the song his arrogance leads him to decide all over again that he's not really responsible for any of it.

It's the perfect setup for what comes in Ouroboros. It took nothing less than a feeling of absolute hopelessness, but Hunter is finally forced into some actual introspection that just comes too late for him to actually do anything to fix all the problems he's created. It makes for a nice contrast with how sinister the Pimp/Priest always is, because in the past, Hunter's self-confidence bordering on innate swagger had always been kind of a counter to it - even in his lowest moments, he'd always maintained the belief that he'd get through whatever was going on simply through his own greatness. The sudden absence of that in this song really gets across how much things have changed in the story.

I also always get a little jolt of excitement from the abrupt, dissonant ending every time I hear it, which I guess is a holdover from the year between Act IV's release and V's, when a popular theory among fans was that it was meant to represent Hunter snapping and stabbing the Pimp/Priest to death right then and there. Turns out that wasn't the case, but the effect is still there for me.

I don't have as much to say about Otriad considering there's far less context surrounding it - I'm just a huge Jim Grey fan that generally enjoys anything he's involved with. Having a WW2-centered album from the Polish perspective is a cool little dash of uniqueness, too. You're right that it certainly doesn't touch Graves, though.

I'm also surprised it took this long for one of my extra noms to fall. That wasn't the one I expected to go down first, either.

239: TOOL - MESSAGE TO HARRY MANBACK:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l8_72NFyd-w&list=OLAK5uy_k_Z0-DYw0_cGPvZm6icNUGbefRT4wktdY&index=6

Nominator: Steiner (5/26)
Source: Aenima (2/15)

Initial Score: 71.21 [#108]
Revised Score: 75.37 [#158]
Final Score: 68.00 [#239]

(First Thoughts: Well I like spoken word lyrics, revenge songs, magic, ambient tracks, and comedy songs. So... yeah, this is more a checklist of things I like than an actual song, but I still like it.)

I also seem to like ambient piano music and this is some nice ambient piano music. Still, theres a limit to how far Ill take a checklist song. If all a song does is read off a list of things I like, then its honestly a bit dull... not dull enough that I stop liking it at all (usually), but dull enough that itll never be particularly close to the top tier.

[Final Thoughts: One of the many songs to fall from the 70 point tier. This song had a lot of novelty value going for it: It was unlike anything else nominated at any of my topics, it checked a lot of boxes for things I like, it had an interesting backstory (this is an angry voicemail message left for one of Green Jellys members), etc, etc, etc.

But... I think the novelty has worn off a bit. Its still a funny idea, but its not exactly the funniest thing around and theres not much here musically either. I think this works best as the first song of this new sub-tier instead of being up in the 70s... for now, anyway. Im sure Ill be back to extremely liking the track in a few months or so, after Ive had time away from it that the joke feels fresh again.]

238: THE DEAR HUNTER - IS THERE ANYBODY HERE?:

https://open.spotify.com/track/7MatoQA2Hgfsdk4CRNcxjo

Nominator: NBIceman (15/22)
Source: Act IV - Rebirth in Repose (9/15)

Initial Score: 58.12 [#280]
Revised Score: 76.91 [#144]
Final Score: 68.05 [#238]

(First Thoughts: The lyrics are definitely what I want as this is quite dissociative... but Im still not very into the song itself, which is unfortunate.)

I find my reaction to this song to be strangely similar to a lot of Every Time I Dies songs, in that I really like the lyrics but am not as sold on the band. Which is funny because the two bands have very little in common.

Either way, I like dissociative songs and this song goes all in on that topic: lines like I left myself for dead and I try to move a limb, but theres a disconnect within are everything I could ask for on that front; And yet, Im still not completely in love with the song for some reason.

[Final Thoughts: Fantastic lyrics, but... yeah, Im not as into the music itself... so Im afraid this one has fallen quite a ways from the Revised Score.]

237: CIVILIZATION 6 - RUSSIAS ATOMIC ERA THEME (KALINKA):

Nominator: paulg235 (4/15)

Initial Score: 50.95 [#387]
Revised Score: 75.92 [#153]
Final Score: 68.10 [#237]

(First Thoughts: Somewhat interesting for not really being any of my styles.)

An extremely ominous version of a folk song about berries is certainly novel enough to be worth a minimum of 70 points. Orchestral folk music still isnt my thing, but the dread-inducing nature of the song and the lyrical dissonance elevate it well beyond others of its kind.

[Final Thoughts: Its got a good atmosphere and its a good idea (both in terms of the idea of the song itself, and of the idea of nominating it here). Think I definitely overshot the mark by throwing it directly to the mid-70s though... like its good and something I like, but its not quite at that level.]

236: THE WEEKND - ECHOES OF SILENCE:

https://open.spotify.com/track/5dikapPlQPrsT3xUsUjj0N

Nominator: Player_0 (7/30)

Initial Score: 59.25 [#269]
Revised Score: 68.55 [#216]
Final Score: 68.15 [#236]

(First Thoughts: Not bad.)

He honestly does have a great voice Theres so much sadness and power here that I find myself rather drawn to him, in spite of things. Im still not into the lyrics (though Ill praise them for at least not being explicit) or the story, but his vocal performance is so good that I actually like this a fair amount.

[Final Thoughts: High 60s. I like it a fair amount, but still not quite enough to reach the next tier.]

235: PSO2 - RESTORED BONDS:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JCeJt-elWYA&list=PLeKaE-gusMmaq2FecWApCcMOVGJblcdrD&index=9

Nominator: NFUN (7/37)

Initial Score: 52.78 [#336]
Revised Score: 68.07 [#220]
Final Score: 68.20 [#235]

(First Thoughts: This feels like music for a fantasy dream wedding montage, with someone daydreaming about getting married and a completely peaceful life ever after.

Not really the type of thing I want to imagine, but its a nice enough song and I have to give it some credit for making me imagine something.)

This song is the embodiment of young love. Expect the score to fluctuate wildly from overwhelming hatred to absolute joy based on wherever I am emotionally at the time you brought up the song. Right now the rating is...good, though I have more use for anti-love songs than a song like this at the moment, I can appreciate how good it is.

[Final Thoughts: Very nice song, if not exactly what I want right now..]

234: FOX STEVENSON - TURN IT UP (HIGHER):

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZwnoL-thK7Q

Nominator: LOLIAmAnAlt (9/15)

Initial Score: 51.19 [#368]
Revised Score: 55.23 (upgraded to 78.01) [#134]
Final Score: 68.25 [#234]

(First Thoughts: Not bad, I suppose.)

I still dont like EDM as a genre, but if you must nominate an EDM track, this is how to go about it. Its softer, lighter, and the singing draws focus away from the EDM-ness of the song.

Regrettably, I still dont have any real attachment to the song. Finding a song of this genre that I kinda like is neat, but I still only kinda like it. Its a good attempt and I appreciate it, but I think the mid-50s seem appropriate score-wise at the moment.

[Later: Ive had this stuck in my head for two days now, so I feel like raising the score to the low 70s.]

[Still Later: ...Eh, maybe high 70s?]

[Final Thoughts: Definitely a song I wildly overvalued on the Revised Score. Its good and all, but not really a 70 point song.]

233: MAZEDUDE - KEYZ TO NEW JUNK CITY:

https://mazedude.bandcamp.com/track/keyz-to-new-junk-city

Nominator: sergicornaga (3/18)

Initial Score: 49.61 [#427]
Revised Score: 53.76 [#383]
Final Score: 51.18 (later upgraded to 68.30) [#233]

9first Thoughts:

[I apparently forgot to type anything in. It just sits there, with a 9 instead of a proper bracket & no text or closing bracket. I find the appropriate enough for this song.]

Another Earthworm Jim remix, another chance to say fuck Doug TenNapel.

Moving on to the actual song: Its...different? I dont usually like non-lyric vocalizations, but Amandas scatting goes well with the track and I actually kinda like it. Unfortunately, the song itself doesnt conjure up any images or feelings or really do anything for me besides sound different. Its enough that Id give it a bit higher score than complete neutrality (50 points), but not much higher.

[(Allegedly) Final Thoughts: I really do like this, just... not as much as all the other songs yet to be eliminated.]

[Not Actually Final: And at the last moment, I decide I like this far too much to give it less than 60 points and have to renumber everything again to account for this.]

[Actually Final: Good enough to have made the jump to the high 60s, but not quite enough to hit the 70s.

...and the numbers are wrong again. Theres definitely still three Mazedude songs left: Glow Worm Jim, Microscopism, and Wheels of Wonder. So, I made another error when counting everyones eliminations... somewhere... ah well.]

232: BAD MARY - WAKE UP:

https://open.spotify.com/track/3JHgGFyDStKGQuuyGWrkA6?si=xj47mlroQ1yIsDXAl0xhOg

Nominator: IhatethisCPU (6/15)

Initial Score: 49.89 [#424]
Revised Score: 49.66 [#444]

Final Score 46.00 (later upgraded to 50.00) (then upgraded to 61.00) (then upgraded to 68.35) [#232]

(First Thoughts: Fine, but forgettable.)

This song serves as the textbook definition of so adequate that its completely unmemorable, I can never recall anything about this song, even seconds after it ends. Its fine, but no aspect of it stands out at all.

[Todays unrelated song detour continues our search for a Game Gear song that I really like]

Power Strike II - Ancient Ruins:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YD0VD7NMQWQ

This isnt one of my favorite game songs, but Im actually pretty impressed by it! The Game Gear isnt exactly known for its great sound chip (as far as Im aware; I certainly never see anyone talking about any soundtracks from it, which is part of why I have such limited knowledge of Game Gear OSTs) and this manages to make a very mysterious sounding song with it. Id probably give this 77-ish points? Its impressive & mysterious, but still not quite one of my favorites.... definitely my current favorite Game Gear song though, so thats neat.

[Not-Quite-Final Thoughts: Remind me to look up some other songs by the composers of this Power Strike II song later. Imami Pon and BA.M if the description is to be believed.

As for the song Im supposed to be talking about... Ill try to get to it tomorrow, Im rather tired at the moment.]

[Still Not Final: Well, I forgot to come back to this. I still cant find much to say about it, but I think I want to move this up to the Exactly 50 point tier.... which means I need to do some last minute renumbering of things because this is another last minute substitution.]

[Sometime Later: ...Well this is starting to become a pet song. One of those that keeps getting scheduled for elimination and being moved just a little further up the list... really not sure how far its going to wind up going by the end.]

[Still Later: Deciding not to eliminate this song has become a daily ritual. So, lets toss this all the way up to the 61 point section of the list; perhaps Ill be willing to cut it when we get to that point.]

[Final Thoughts: Okay, I think this song has finally reached the end of its journey. ]

231: REWRITE - LOVE SONG:

https://youtu.be/9OD9MfPYOtA

Nominator: Haste_2 (2/19)
Source: Hastes Extra Songs (2/7)

Initial Score: 55.06 [#304]
Revised Score: 57.26 [#333]
Final Score: 68.40 [#231]

(First Thoughts: Cute enough for a decent score, not so overwhelmingly cute that it gets a very high score.)

I like things that are cute and simple, and it doesnt get much cuter or simpler than a basic la la la la song. Unfortunately, I dont have any connection to it, so its just cute.

It may have fared better if I had some context for this song? Or perhaps not. As a VN song this is probably some horrifically tragic song, as they usually wind up being.

[Not-Quite-Final Thoughts: ...Fine, lets try the mid-60s for this.]

[Final Thoughts: I do love cute songs, but this isnt quite cute enough to escape the tier. Its had a bit of a run getting moved up the list, enough to get to the high 60s at least.]

230: ELSE & POKI THE SHARK - SUPERNOVA:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KD_VGYSXMio

Nominator: UF8 (14/15)

Initial Score: 70.00 [#138]
Revised Score: 65.04 [#245]
Final Score: 68.45 [#230]

(First Thoughts: Not bad.)

Another song that I cant find any information about... OR CAN I?! With enough effort I can find a site to download the YouTube captions from this video and run them through an automatic translator to get something.

Even if the sky is infinite, I want to chase you to the ends of the world

Somehow I expected a more interesting result... all that effort for such a standard lovey-dovey lyric. Tsk, tsk, tsk.

Aaanywho... lyrical disappointments aside, the song is fine. Much higher quality video than I would have expected, though Im trying to not be as influenced by such things.

[Not-Quite-Final Thoughts: When did they add the Japanese lyrics to the videos description? I swear those werent there the first two times, which is why I had to go through several extra steps to get a copy... ah well. Cant complain about the lyrics being easier for other people to get. Also, even if I somehow did miss the lyrics before, it s not like it matters.

Also, this song feels a lot more tragic than I gave it credit for.

Even if sadness tears her breast
Time does not wait for this

-Im worried about what I left behind-

Maybe you are by my side too
I want to believe what I cant see with the naked eye

Its pretty easy to read this song as one of them being a ghost, though I could be reading things that arent there into it. Thered have to be a lot of lyrical dissonance with the song for that to be accuratenot that that would be a bad thing... I dont know where Im going with this rambling, but writing it off as a lovey song was pretty stupid.]

[Final Thoughts: I was trying not to read your PM to avoid it influencing me, but now that I have read it, I see that this is the middle of a trilogy of songs? Hmm... Im torn now. On the one hand, Im sure there are some eliminated songs that would have been improved if I made the effort to listen to other songs from their respective albums for context and what not, so I shouldnt listen to the other two Else & Poki songsit is an individual song ranking topic and the additional context songs werent even nominated.

On the other paw, Ive certainly put a fair amount of research into some other songs and I have to listen to those two songs eventually... fine, quick first impressions.

MABOROSHI

Well, the autotranslated lyrics are gibberish, so Ill say they arent helping much. (The chewing gum that he sent at 10 AM when the taste was gone may actually be the most gibberish line Ive ever gotten from an automatic translation)

Songs not bad, though not one of my favorites... I suspect it would have started in the high 40s and ended in the low-to-mid 50s on re-listens.

AUGUST 31ST

....Nope, not any closer to understanding anything. Song should rank somewhere in the 60s. I like it, but I dont know if I like it more than Supernova... Id say theyre both pretty close to each other scorewise.

Right, back to Supernova: Nice enough song, high 60s score, I like it.]

Okay, were in a good spot to speed things back up a bit, so lets aim for 16 drops tonight:

===============

229: THE WEEKND - NEXT:

https://open.spotify.com/track/4m0KaNb0ClCOvgThd2Gv2b

Nominator: Player_0 (6/30)

Initial Score: 26.60 [#545]
Revised Score: 12.49 [#583]
Final Score: 68.50 [#229]

(First Thoughts: Uuuuugggghhhhh.... )

This is definitely a song by The Weeknd alright. The first line makes me hate the song and I typically hate overly repeated lyrics. Im not going to count how many times You just want me cause Im next comes up, but the answer is that it is sang way too many times. This song does not have six minutes of content, but it insists on going on that long anyway.

...Well hate is too strong a word. Lets go with strong dislike.

[Not-Quite-Final Thoughts: The subdued and quiet instruments in the background are kinda nice. And the very end of that outro, with the simple yet sorrowful piano playing... can we just remove his singing? Or at least change...say... every single lyric that hes singing?]

[Later: ...How far up the list can I drag this based on liking the intro and the outro? Rhetorical question, weve already established that I could do anything and put this song in first place if I wanted to (I do not want to). But I think I like this, somewhat. Going to jump this song up to the low 50s, well see how Im feeling about it when we get to that part of the list. Theres a chance it might hit 60, but Im not jumping it all the way from 10 points to 60 right now. Definitely dont want to overvalue this.]

[Still Later: ...Fine, 68 points, lets try that.]

[Final Thoughts: Another of those songs that kept getting moved up and up the list, only to crash before the 70 point barrier. Still a tremendous increase from when I hated it.]

228: PERFUME - GLITTER:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H3RBn3MG8ms

Nominator: Djungelurban (9/15)

Initial Score: 60.00 [#242]
Revised Score: 71.19 [#196]
Final Score: 68.53 [#228]

(First Thoughts: Still a bit too dance music-y, but its still pretty nice.)

Its a pretty good Jpop song, but not my favorite. I dont feel any connection to the lyrics and their voices sound oddly syntheticwhich usually is the type of thing I like, but it feels like this group is trying to be Human Vocaloids or something and it makes me want to go listen to some actual Hatsune Miku music.

That all sounds incredibly harsh, but I do like it more than it sounds like I doI wouldnt have moved it up to 70 points otherwise.

[Final Thoughts: Another song that I still like, but feel I moved a bit too far up the list when trying to correct how undervalued it was originally. It is catchy and fun to listen to, but not quite 70 points worth of fun.]

227: MEGA MAN 11 - BOUNCE MAN STAGE INSTRUMENTAL:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kvWJKZpd2No

Nominator: Hbthebattle (2/11)

Initial Score: 59.16 [#270]
Revised Score: 76.80 [#145]
Final Score: 68.55 [#227]

(First Thoughts: Surprised youre the only person to try actual Mega Man tracks in any of my topics, honestly. Song is cute and, yes, bouncy. Feels like a carnival montage theme for some sitcommain female character and their date just going around the carnival and wordlessly having GOOFY FUN with whatever food & attractions are around because none of the scenes are worth developing into full scenes with dialogue, but are still cute enough to be somewhat funny.

Still not the best scene Ive imagined from a song, but its nice to be able to picture something, so credit where its due and what not.)

Bouncy & cute feels like it should be worth at least 70 points. We need more cute songs in this topic.

[Final Thoughts: Still bouncy, still cute, still like it... just not as much.]

226: BRING ME THE HORIZON - IT NEVER ENDS:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=od3YDQaMjO8

Nominator: @BlackDra90n (14/21)
Source: Live at the Royal Albert Hall (12/14)

Initial Score: 58.82 [#275]
Revised Score: 69.15 [#211]
Final Score: 68.62 [#226]

(First Thoughts: Its fine enough.)

The song has a nice mixture of anger and sadness that I find rather appealing. The Wikipedia article is so overwhelmingly positive about the track as to be a parody of itself:

[The] song's "punked-up, infectious, snarling chorus is juxtaposed early on by the ethereal choral vocals that float through the whole album". This contrast is described as a blend of "delicacy with brutality"

"Thunderous, floor-shaking beating and double-bass pedal rolls", which..."combine to create the feeling that rhinos are steamrollering across your chest".

Not that I care how professionally Wikipedia articles are written, but thats overselling the song quite a bit...

[Final Song: Good song, as usual.]

225: BRING ME THE HORIZON - EMPIRE (LET THEM SING):

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZwdpjancM2o

Nominator: @BlackDra90n (13/21)
Source: Live at Royal Albert Hall (11/14)

Initial Score: 54.27 [#316]
Revised Score: 68.91 [#213]
Final Score: 68.68 [#225]

(First Thoughts: Didnt leave much of an impression.)

One of those songs I like that I cant find much to say about. Its just a generally good song: good lyrics, good vocal performances (from him and the choir), good imagery, open to interpretation (its about relapse, but its vague enough that you can relate to it as a relapse into any kind of self-destructive behavior), good length (not too short or too long), its just good.

[Final Thoughts:Another very nice song that just doesnt quite make it to the next tier.]

===============

224: THE DEAR HUNTER - THE SQUEAKY WHEEL:

https://open.spotify.com/track/3bpQfM48Ajbui58VMy4HLW

Nominator: NBIceman (14/22)
Source: Act IV: Rebirth In Reprise (8/15)

Initial Score: 66.41 [#161]
Revised Score: 69.51 [#208]
Final Score: 68.75 [#224]

(First Thoughts: I do kinda like this one.)

This is probably the best of the songs dealing with the stolen identity portion of the plot. Switching from the main characters perspective to that of The Fiancs, this song deals with her figuring out that the main character is not actually her dead loverbut deciding to give herself to the lie anyway.

Its actually a somewhat compelling narrative and focusing on how the main characters deception affects everyone in his life gives some much needed depth to the plotline... unfortunately, we dont really talk about The Fianc or her perspective after this song (as far as I can recall), leaving it as wasted potential. At least the song itself is nice.

[Final Thoughts: Good song, though its obviously no longer my favorite from this portion of the album.]

223: CRYSTAL LAKE - WATCH ME BURN:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tmUEwyRCJ9I

Nominator: @BlackDra90n (12/21)
Source: BlackDra90ns Extra Songs (2/7)

Initial Score: 63.19 [#188]
Revised Score: 68.79 [#214]
Final Score: 68.79 [#223]

(First Thoughts: Im my own worst enemy, and the war has just begun is the type of lyric I want to hear, but Im not as into the song as I want to be. Its close, just...off slightly.

Also, i remember this band name, but I dont recall the previously nominated song right off hand.)

I actually like the instruments on this songfeels like it should be too much emphasis on the drumming for me, but it works, and I dont want to ruin things by questioning them. I also really like the lyrics, as mentioned. Theyre definitely the type I was looking for.

Not fully into the singer here, though for a louder metal song, its a lot nicer than some other songs.

[Final Thoughts: Good song in all respects.]

===============

222: THE WEEKND - WICKED GAMES:

https://open.spotify.com/track/6VwBbL8CzPiC4QV66ay7oR

Nominator: Player_0 (5/30)

Initial Score: o (treated as a 0) [#589]
Revised Score: 40.00 [#529]
Final Score: 68.83 [#222]

(First Thoughts: ...Well, pretty sure this album has lowest ranked album completely wrapped up.

That o was originally a typo, but Im keeping it. Im not sure if an o is better or worse than a 0, but Im definitely going to pretend its intentional.)

[The writeup that was originally here was accidentally deleted. It wasnt worth reading in the first place and it will not be missed.]

[Later: ...Seriously, this is just a typical song from the album. Blah blah sex, blah blah drugs, blah blah cheating... you already know how I feel about this type of song.

It manages to escape the bottom tier because it has some positive attributes: References to his shame, pain, and scars makes this...kinda close to the generalized sadness & pain without being soul-crushing that I want in my music. Theres also a reference to The Devil which is just a metaphor for drugs, but I like the image of dancing with the devil & it reminds me of the 80s Batman film, so bravo, And his voice is pretty greatthis isnt his best vocal performance on the album, but its definitely good.

Most of the lyrics turn me off of the song quickly, but there are hints of greatness. At the moment, I think its the textbook definition of a 40 point song: I dont really like it, but there are enough positive attributes that I dont mind listening to it.]

[Not-Quite-Final Thoughts: ...I think I actually like this tonight. So sure, lets go up to 60 pointsits got a good beat, good vocal performances, and dancing with the Devileven metaphoricallyis worth something.

...Still not exactly thrilled with all the sex and drugs, but whatever, there are enough positives here that I can actually like this.]

[Final Thoughts: High 60s. Theres a lot to like here musically, but enough things that are very much not for me to keep it from going up another tier.]

221: ONEOHTRIX POINT NEVER - MUTANT STANDARD:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Be67Sb4S-ec

Nominator: @Toxtricity / Mycro (9/15)

Initial Score: 51.116 [#371]
Revised Score: 68.67 [#215]
Final Score: 68.85 [#221]

(First Thoughts: Not nearly as enchanting as the work from their album you showed me two years ago, but its still odd enough to be intriguing...)

I dont like the rapid, repeating percussion in the early parts of the track. It takes quite a while for the song to actually start doing...much of anything, to be blunt. And when the odd vocal samples start, theyre still drowned out by that percussion noise for even longer.

Eventually the song goes completely off the rails (lets say around the 2:20 point where everything going on starts to drown out the percussion, instead of vice-versa) and its... I dont even know what it is. Its a very alien type of music, which I love in theory, but this is one of those songs where Im not as into it as Im supposed to be.

[Final Thoughts: Well, its easy to see why you picked this song. Between the high chaos, the indescribable strangeness of the track, the spoken word vocal samples taken without any context, this is quite explicitly the type of thing I should love.

And I like it a fair amount, you know, its the high 60s. Im not a fan of the intro, but the song eventually goes places and never feels like its too long or anything.]

220: POPPY - NOTHING I NEED:

https://open.spotify.com/track/4zeem4an5qfdk50p11BLFF

Source: I Disagree (More) (8/14)

Initial Score: 60.00 [#242]
Revised Score: 69.63 [#207]
Final Score: 68.90 [#220]

(First Thoughts: Pretty, but it doesnt inspire any specific reaction.)

I like the dreamy feel the song gives off, but Im not really into the lyrics. Its obviously a very personal song for her, which is great, but I find theres nothing that I really connect with and it keeps me from getting too into it.

[Todays arbitrary song selection goes to music from a terrible, terrible game.]

Beast Wars Transformers (PSX) - Kill Dinobot:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gBSlmmQn8bA

Such a bad game... but this track in particular shows some potential. It opens with a reasonably tense atmosphere that I kinda dig before ramping up to adequate metal remix level music. Its not fantastic or anything, but theres enough in the song that I feel the composer could have someday attained greatness.

...I mean, they probably didnt, if they were stuck making music for games this terrible, but still! Theres some potential on this track.

[Final Thoughts: Another nice song, though still not quite at the 70 point level.]

And here we enter another not quite a new tier, but if you could all pretend this is a more substantial increase than it actually is, Id appreciate it sub-tier!

219: RAIDAS - LEGEND:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kRu2QZrXICY

Nominator: handsomeboy (7/15)

Initial Score: 51.006 [#382]
Revised Score: 64.80 [#247]
Final Score: 69.40 [#219]

(First Thoughts: I dont think Im a fan of this, but it is a bit intriguing. I cant find anyone talking about it, so I dont know whats happening in this songauto translated lyrics give lines like Superimpose sword hairpin to repair broken mirror which implies either this song is based on some story which might help itor the auto-translate is very, very confused by the writers choice of metaphor. Ill try to see if I can decipher anything before the song is actually eliminated, but Ive spent as much time trying to learn about it as I can for a first impression.)

I seriously doubt Im going to make any progress understanding it, but lets dive into some auto-translated pages and see if we can find anything:

A blog talking about how great Raidas was (several great hits even though they were a short-lived group) tells me that the lyrics are alluding to The Story of the Purple Hairpin and Emperor Flower. Progress! Those confusing lyrics are inspired by something.

Amazingly Googling story of the purple hairpin actually produces relevant results! Its a Cantonese Opera and so is Emperor Flower for that matter, both by Tang Ti-sheng. So this is an electronic pop song from the 80s that draws lyrical inspiration from two Cantonese Operas, okay, I am actually learning things today.

...as an aside, I do not like the excerpts of the opera that Ive found Googling, but as neither of them feature the original cast of the opera & Im only listening to brief snippets out of context, Ill refrain from making any real judgments on the matter.

Going further it looks like the opera was based on something written sometime between the late 1500s & early 1600s and its at this point that I think my research has paid off about as well at it ever could; theres also a Purple Hairpin movie, which may or may not be related to the opera, which... right. I am legitimately interested in pursuing this, but this lyric is based on THIS which was based on THAT is just too deep a rabbit hole to go down without actually knowing the language.

[Not-Quite-Final Thoughts: The YouTube link had fairly low quality audio, but I just found out that three Raidas songs (including this one) are available on Spotify to listen to in much higher quality! I dont usually care about quality, but it makes a pretty big difference on this track. Not enough of a difference to move it up a whole tier, but enough to move it up a few slots.]

[Final Thoughts: A good song that was a lot of fun to try to research information about.]

Source: I Disagree (More) (7/14)

Initial Score: 62.14 [#204]
Revised Score: 72.18 [#187]
Final Score: 69.43 [#218]

(First Thoughts: Good message.)

Ehh... I like chaos and destruction, so this was a bit of a freebie.

[Unrelated Note: I want to listen to Marilyn Mansons WE ARE CHAOS after this ranking ends. I know its just coincidence, but everyone keeps rambling about how freaky it is that he & Poppy both released songs with Chaos in the name so close to each other.]

[Final Thoughts: The rather loud CHAOS CHAOS CHAOS CHAOS choruses are somethin I have to be the mood for... if I am, I like the song quite a bit. If Im not, its a bit too loud and I like the song less. It tends to bounce between the 60 & 70 point tiers, but I do always like the song.]

Wicked Games is so good! I'll always remember it as the first song of his that got consistent radio play.

Next is one of the easiest songs to interpret as being about his rise to fame and relationship with his fans; Trilogy has a lot of those vague metaphors. But the primary intent is definitely just to sing about sex and drugs!

217: FRUMS - RESTORATION LAKE:

Nominator: cakophon (15/26)
Source: metacontinues (3/6)

Initial Score: 68.12 [#157]
Revised Score: 72.40 [#185]
Final Score: 69.50 [#217]

(First Thoughts: Another one of many songs that seems to be exactly what Im supposed to love, but feels lacking in some way.)

Im probably supposed to talk about the Presidential speech sampled in this song, but I cant actually make enough of it out to do so. Ive tried, but I just cant decipher enough words to get anywhere.

Other than that, this is another good Frums track. It doesnt inspire any specific emotions (a common trait with so, so many songs this year), but its a high-quality song that I enjoy listening to

[Final Thoughts: Im afraid I still have no real thoughts about the song.]

216: MEMEX - BREATHING TRIGGER:

[link unavailable, sorry.]

Nominator: UF8 (13/15)

Initial Score: 70.47 [#121]
Revised Score: 74.60 [#165]
Final Score: 69.52 [#216]

(First Thoughts: Hey, its suddenly easy to find translated lyrics to everything on this album. Was it always this easy and I just didnt make enough of an effort? Or did I find them and just forgot that Id found them? I should listen to the album again now.

[Later: I see you did provide me the lyrics; like I think I mentioned earlier in the topic, I was trying not to read too much of the PM to avoid letting it influence the rankings, but I do appreciate that.])

The only ones left behind are those of us who are melting into you.

The phantoms had a dream.
The mixed wills become your blood.

...Those lyrics sure are something alright.

8-bit gaming style beeping music, some traditional instruments, and bizarre/creepy lyrics combine to create... something. Im still not sure what, but something.

[Final Thoughts: I do still like it, but I dont think its quite at that 70 point level; its weird and intriguing, but not something I want to listen to on a very regular basis, so Im dropping it down to the very high 60s level.]

215: SOMUNIA - BACKWORD:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x7FpXIJRDTU

Nominator: UF8 (12/15)

Initial Score: 58.54 [#277]
Revised Score: 75.04 [#161]
Final Score: 69.58 [#215]

(First Thoughts: I didnt expect to see references to Back to the Future, so that was neat.)

Really nice video, though as Ivve said, Im trying to be less influenced by such things.

Either way, this seems like a suitably bleak song from what little Google Translate gives me, so credit for that.

Some random lyric examples:
Its just a track going back and forth, but Im lost in distress.

Rewind and repeat, tracing the end of the record I realize I cant get out

You may not be able to get out of the one-bar loop for the rest of your life

A story that makes you vomit every time you remember

I certainly cant argue that the song isnt sad enough. Unfortunately, I never really connect with her singing, which hurts the score a bit.

[Final Thoughts: Still good, still hits the right type of lyrics, but I feel the score is somewhere in the middle between the first & second listens; its still way, way beyond anything from the 50 point tier... but not quite up there with the rest of the 70s.]

214: THE DEAR HUNTER - A NIGHT ON THE TOWN:

https://open.spotify.com/track/5nVjujWglwDnhlAjXFNsdI

Nominator: NBIceman (13/22)
Source: Act IV: Rebirth in Reprise (7/15)

Initial Score: 48.37 [#439]
Revised Score: 54.32 [#375]
Final Score: 56.03 (upgraded to 59.98) (upgraded to 69.60) [#214]

[REDACTED]

...Maybe later, when the song actually drops.

[Not-Quite-Final Thoughts: Pretty sure this is going to be the first time my ranking of the album is way off from yours. Not that Im letting that influence anything, but Id have bet this one was your favorite.

So the REDACTED portionthe original writeups went with the worst possible interpretation of the lyrics. The song kinda implies that Hunter has sex with The Fianc while so drunk from the night on the town that he confuses her for Ms. Leadingresulting in an unfortunate story in which the main character is both a rapist (since hes sleeping with The Brothers fiancee while stealing his identity) & a rape victim (because hes too out of it to even be aware of who hes sleeping with).

But... the lyrics are vague enough that you dont have to read them that way. I certainly wouldnt have jumped to that conclusion were I not reading other peoples interpretation of the lyrics. And whatever did-or-did-not happen seems to be largely irrelevant to the story as a whole; once we get to the political part of the story, the fianc basically vanishes from the narrative entirely. Its so utterly irrelevant that I cant say Im actually bothered by it and the lyrics so vague that... yeah, whatever, consider that whole complaint dropped. (I wouldnt bring it up at all, but someone would inevitably ask why I removed the original writeups)

Moving on to the actual song itself: I like the chorus. Its catchy and it is heavily reminding me of something else that I cant quite place... the early parts of the song are also pretty great. Its one of their more pop songs and has an infectious energy to it.

The problem is that its a nine minute long song and the part I like ends at around the 3:30 mark. A better person than I would offer many compliments at this stage: While the night on the town starts incredibly upbeat (in terms of musical style, anyway), it quickly becomes wistful. Listen to the pain in Hunters voice as he wonders how long he can live in this illusion!

Which.... yeah, its nice and I like it, but not as much as I liked the first segment of the song. And that part is immediately followed by an instrumental section that I dont like and the longer the song goes, the further away it gets from the parts that I liked. Is it a complicated musical journey that travels through multiple emotional states from the initial excitement at the night on the town (mixed with the fear of possibly being found out as an imposter & general fear of what might happen), to sad reflections on things, to drunkenly seeing the fianc (note how slow and dreamy the music is to reflect the inebriated state)? Yes, obviously.

But... I kinda only actually like the first part of the journey... just because I see the appeal doesnt mean it actually appeals to me.]

[Later: ...Alright, I like it a bit more than that score indicated, but I still dont quite feel like its at the 60 point level.]

[Final Thoughts: One of those songs that kept getting moved further and further up the list, but I think this is as far as it goes. I still do not like the prolonged instrumental portion and its not getting to the 70 point level with that holding it back.

And yeah, you can tell that part up there was written when this was one of the lowest scoring from the album, before things got rather shuffled around and this track got several significant boosts.]

From what I gathered the Cantonese opera works is derived from another style of opera from China, which in turn is based on some old book or folk tale centuries ago. Im not some expert in literature so I cant really say much about them, but they are basically tragic love stories.

In any case I really appreciate the effort you take to research foreign songs despite the language and cultural barriers.

By the way, its normal to not like the opera. Hardly anyone here cares about it these days anyway.

Initial Score: 81.58 [#41]
Revised Score: 86.39 [#82]
Final Score: 69.61 [#213]

(First Thoughts: This has a western feel to it that makes it feel like a Wild ARMs track. This is the Ive been exiled from my home town because reasons and now I wander the wilderness with my AWESOME GUN THAT IS ALSO A ROCKET LAUNCHER OR WHATEVER type track, which is pretty great.)

A good song, but a bit one dimensional. I praise it for staying subdued and not trying to make the song too intense, but it almost feels...too subdued to be quite honest? I keep expecting something dramatic to happen, but it never does. Which is probably a good thing, but still a bit odd.

[Final Thoughts: A nice enough song, but Im not sure why I was so into it the first two times. There are a lot of instrumental songs this ranking that more emotional, and paint a better soundscape, and even more strongly remind me of Wild ARMs. Is it good? Yes. But not anywhere near 80 points.]

Initial Score: 90.00 [#13]

Final Score: 69.66 [#212]

(First Thoughts: I was going to give this a 98 because of how strong the sad piano at the beginning was, but the OVERLY DRAMATIC ending knocked a full eight points off the score.)

This song works better in context. The buildup to actual in game music as you prepare to start the game makes a lot of sense and is well done, but its kinda annoying when listening to the song by itself. I prefer my ambient piano music to not spontaneously become LOUD and EPIC at the very end. Its also a rather abrupt ending here; again, in context of start playing the game now it works, but by itself, its just a sudden stop.

I like ambient piano music, so Im still giving this a good score, but it could definitely be better.

[Final Thoughts: A bit too short. The opening is emotional, but I dont really get enough time to fully experience the feeling... the dramatic ending is also emotional (in a different way), but its only about 12 or 13 seconds long. The song definitely shows potential greatness, but it leaves me wanting more.]

211: ITIMATUSUZUKA - I JUST WANNA GO HOME:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8F6ie4c25Hg

Nominator: IhatethisCPU (5/15)

Initial Score: 47.00 [#459]
Revised Score: 54.74 [#369]
Final Score: 51.50 (upgraded to 69.70) [#211]

(First Thoughts: The song title and thumbnail image made me hope this was going to be very creepy and unsettling, but it wasnt.)

This feels too normal for a horror game. I like it, slightly, but Id prefer something unsettling instead of this... spooky dance party vibe this song has going for it.

[Im out of random songs I want to talk about, so lets... bounce around YouTube randomly and find something entirely new]

Enduro Racer (SMS) - BGM 1:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_D-NcdILXD8

Its odd. Id swear Id never played any version of Enduro Racer, but this song feels very familiar for some reason. Now I want to go through a bunch of Master System songs and try to find what it reminds me of, but I suppose I dont have time for that. Ive still got 500-ish songs to rank.

[One more Enduo Racer song before we go]

Enduro Racer (SMS) - Ending:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dsMsV03UZUA

I think I just found my favorite Master System song. I think Id probably give the full 100 points to this, its somehow both very triumphant and sad at the same time. I truly love this little song.

[Final Thoughts (that turned out to not be very final): Unique and interesting, but not quite the genre I want it to be...]

[Later: Ive had this stuck in my head lately... think Im going to go ahead and jump it up a tier for being more memorable than a lot of songs at the 50 point level.

Also, someone remind me to look for a few other Hiroshi Miyauchi songs. I doubt Ill like any of his other work as much as Enduro Racer Ending, but its worth Googling his name and seeing what soundtracks pop up.]

[Actually Final: Another one of those songs that just kept getting pushed further and further up the list, only to fall just short of the 70 point mark.]

210: LIVE - THE DOLPHINS CRY:

Nominator: azuarc (14/28)
Source: The Distance to Here (7/13)

Initial Score: 63.66 [#184]
Revised Score: 50.96 [#423]
Final Score: 69.80 [#210]

(First Thoughts: Hey! I actually like this and dont have any complaints about it.)

I suggest not looking for anyone elses thoughts on this song or youll stumble into crazy people screeching about how this is a prophetic song that will lead us to the spiritual awakening that the illuminati is trying to prevent. Live (and the Red Hot Chili Peppers for some reason) are divine prophets that shall guide humanity to its next evolution!

.
...Putting crazy people aside (they honestly had no impact on the scoring and, if anything, would have only raised it), joins the rapidly growing pile of Im not sure why I liked this songs. I guess I still have more positive feelings to this than negative ones, but its pretty close to falling into the pit of neutrality.

I guess I like references to dolphins and the repeated refrain of love will lead us is... generic, but somewhat pleasing? Its almost Bill & Ted-esque, where you can almost picture this being the rock song meant to unit humanity with love or something.

...Well, not quite, but it feels like it could have fit onto the soundtrack of one of the films anyway.

[Not-Quite-Final Thoughts:

Life is like a shooting star
It don't matter who you are
If you only run for cover, it's just a waste of time
We are lost 'til we are found
This phoenix rises up from the ground
And all these wars are over

Well... out of all the songs on the album, this feels like one of the least spiritual. Its really only this one verse... but it is a nice verse to contemplate and play with. Also, I do like even metaphorical phoenixes, so that lines probably worth something...

...eh, lets move it back up to the 60 point tier. I like this verse enough to move it back up the list.]

[Final Thoughts: High 60s. Im back to liking it, even more than the first time. Yay?]

Nominator: sergiocornaga (3/18)

Initial Score: 47.39 [#456]
Revised Score: 67.95 [#221]
Final Score: 69.85 [#209]

(First Thoughts: Not bad, but largely unremarkable.)

[REDACTED]

(The original writeup was largely a rant against Doug TenNapel and had very little to say about the song itself, so it has been removed to make way for something less stupid.)

The song has a fairly slow start. The opening parts are fine, but a little on the dull side. Once the song fully gets going after the four minute mark, I actually get rather into it. Its hard to describe what its doing; it keeps layering in new aspects, but it doesnt really intensifyits a very chill song the whole way through and I dig what its doing. Though even at 6:47 long, the song feels a bit shortits like the song is building up to something fantastic, but stops a bit abruptly before it actually reaches it.

Its good and I like it, but I wish Mazedude went one step further with it.

[Final Thoughts: I cant think of anything else to add.]

208: THE DEAR HUNTER - WAVES:

https://open.spotify.com/track/3ig2dV1bPM5ejNjd0iOp9U

Nominator: NBIceman (12/22)
Source: Act IV: Rebirth in Reprise (6/15)

Initial Score: 69.10 [#149]
Revised Score: 70.00 [#202]
Final Score: 69.90 [#208]

(First Thoughts: I like this, though Im sure I like it more without any context.)

Reactions to this song, as far as I can tell:

50%: The song is so profound and beautiful that it hurts.

50%: LOL he said lighthouse that means this track is based on Bioshock because lighthouses obviously never existed before Bioshock invented them LOL LOL BIOSHOCK BIOSHOCK BIOSHOCK.

Moving on... this is probably the most pop song on the album, I dont think itd be terribly out of place if I heard this playing on the radio at some point. Which is probably a complimentI had a Carly Rae Jepsen song in second place last year, so I cant say I have anything against pop music. [At least, I really hope that Carly Rae song was in second place; the top of the list shifted so many times that its hard to recall exactly where anything specific wound up]

Ehh, where was I... right, right, so its a good song. I think this is probably his most pleasing vocal performance on the album and I continue to like metaphors relating to water, so I like this.

[Final Thoughts: I keep bouncing between having this song as a very high 60 or the lowest 70... but I think Im going back to the very high 60s score. Its very pleasant and Id like to have seen more of these pop style songs from the band, but I think theres a slight gap between this song and the 70 point ones. Sorry.]

Initial Score: 65.37 [#166]
Revised Score: 72.40 [#185]
Final Score: 69.95 [#207]

(First Thoughts: I do not think you should have followed Dux Mix 1 with this songactually, I dont think anything should have followed Dux Mix as that is a very the world is over now, go away ending and this songwhich would seem reasonably chaotic in comparison to the vast majority of songs herefeels distressingly normal by comparison.

Will probably benefit when I listen to it on a different day.)

The purest state of chaos they say, but this really doesnt feel very odd to me. I know its got backwards music, odd vocals, and a total psychotic breakdown but it feels... quite organized and logical. And that moment of peace after the breakdown is so tranquil and beautiful, its really quite lovely.

But the song itself is far too short. It conveys a lot of thoughts and ideas during. Its short runtime, but I never get to fully enjoy them.

[Final Thoughts: Somewhere there has to be a song that hits the perfect sweet spot, where its not so long that I cant remember any individual section of it but its also not so short that I dont get to fully appreciate each section.

...In theory, anyway.]

Initial Score: 59.14 [#271]
Revised Score: 79.22 [#123]
Final Score: 69.97 [#205]

(First Thoughts: I get the feeling you nominated this more for the weird, PSX-era quality video than the song itself...)

I like this considerably more the second time around, possibly because Im less distracted by the video. Its just a nice, relaxing song. Doesnt inspire any specific emotions or feature any specific lyrics Id like to point out, but its just kinda soothing in a way few other songs this topic are. I like it.

[Final Thoughts: Still a relaxing song that I still like, just not as much as the second time. ....Also, its weird that this song is always a very high ranking member of whatever tier its at. Its always high 50s, high 60s, high 70s... it never winds up towards the early or middle parts of a tier, nor does it ever stay in a specific tier. Weird.]

Final Score: 69.97 [#205]

(First Thoughts: The Silent Hill series seems to consistently have good music. This isnt one of the best, but I do like it.)

I could always use more songs dealing with a decent into madness and this song is as bleak as I could possibly ask for... but Im having a bit of trouble getting past the whole drug addiction part of the song. Sorry, but thats probably holding it back a tier. I still like the song quite a bit, but I dont fully love it.

Still: Great voice, great concept, some great lyrics... just held back a bit by the Sugar.

[Final Thoughts: Still great, Im just less into it this time around. Again. Like so many formerly 70 point songs.]

204: MAZEDUDE - MICROSCOPISM:

Nominator: sergiocornaga (2/18)

Initial Score: 53.02 [#334]
Revised Score: 78.45 [#130]
Final Score: 68.99 [#204]

(First Thoughts: Does some things I like, like the choices of vocal samples, but Im still not totally into it.)

Id say you should show this track to Mycro/Toxtricity, but since he nominated something from American Pixels last topic, I imagine hes already aware of this track. Either way, challenging time signatures are very much his thing, and not something Im consciously capable of recognizing at the moment -so- I suspect this song would get higher marks from him.

...well I dont really know and its probably offensive for me to just go song description mentions time signatures so he might be interested in this, like I know he has interests other than time signatures, but...uhh...

,...MOVING ON. The song has a strange feel to it, which I do find rather appealing. I cant place whats wrong with it (probably the aforementioned time signature abnormalities), but its very off and I find myself enjoying it quite a bit suddenly.

[Final Thoughts: Still a good song. Its a little weird, weve got some nice out-of-context voice samples, though Im not as into it. I think I have to be in a certain frame of mind to really get into songs like this, but its fantastic when Im in the mood for it. Right now, its just very goodwhich is still good, obviously, just not as incredibly high scoring as the first time.]

haha microscopism is definitely my favorite from that album; though i have much less attachment to The 7th Guest than I do myst so i probably listen to the myst remixes on that more, microscopism is the one where while i'm listening i'm the most into it for sure

also I'm not tooo surprised to see the long intro on that Oneohtrix Point Never one drag it down, glad you liked the rest of it though, was really hoping you would! I would recommend listening to the whole Garden of Delete album if you liked the rest of that particular song though, whole thing has a very distinct style and definitely that repetitive intro is out of the ordinary for it. There's some other OPN stuff I'd recommend too but go with Garden of Delete first i'd say. i know you listened to some other stuff before as well

as for the Jacob Collier one---jacob is normally not even close to that overtly weird so in context of the rest of the album, that track stands out a lot, though there's actually an even stranger one that's frustratingly even SHORTER (and almost picked that one instead):
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oOCbkL63CKU
and i really wish he'd make something that's like full 4-5 minute songs or whatever in the style of these weird ones. because it's so frustrating that some of the most perfect music to me is relegated to these tiny songs relative to all his much more normal longer stuff (and to be clear i like jacob collier in general well enough, but these strange electronic ones interest me much more than anything else he does)

Through the magic of tied scores and the list getting rearranged so many times, we have...uhh...more than 200 songs in the top 200. </.<

I wasnt really aiming for it when dropping songs down to the 60 point level, but there was a brief moment where we had a four way tie for 201st place. Four Guardians, the highest ranked of the 60 point tier, blocking access to both the top 200 songs and the 70 point tier. It was all dramatic and looked cool from a bookkeeping standpoint.

...Then another song got moved down and now the Four Guardians are in the top 200. Technically. Though that means theres...203 songs in the top 200. So congratulations to the songs that made it to this point! And well end the night with the aforementioned Guardian Songs, to set us up to go into the 70 point tier tomorrow. List of extra songs will be updated and posted later this evening:

200 [TIE]: THE DEAR HUNTER - WAIT:

https://open.spotify.com/track/2DIIvFlbCL1tM2WaaBiEm1

Nominator: NBIceman (11/22)
Source: Act IV: Rebirth in Repose (5/15)

Initial Score: 60.00 [#242]
Revised Score: 71.30 [#195]
Final Score: 69.9999 [#200]

(First Thoughts: ...Okay, I do like this song, but if this is a duet... couldnt we get a second singer? Or do anything to differentiate who is singing which lines?)

I know Ive criticized the singer for only having one voice for every character, but its most prominent on this track in which no one seems to be entirely sure which verse is sung by which character. Its not a big deal, but it does pull me out of the story a bit.

Either way, the lyrics appeal to me quite a bit. I dont really want to get into it, but... yeah, Id say I definitely have room for this song on my playlists.

[Final Thoughts: Another song that I moved a bit too far up the list as an overcorrection; its certainly well beyond the exactly 60 point zone, but I feel its better suited as one of the guards blocking access to the 70 point tier, as opposed to actually being on the tier itself.]

200 [TIE]: PHARAO - I SHOW YOU SECRETS:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I3Qwf6MGCYE

Nominator: Djungelurban (8/15)

Initial Score: 34.60 [#526]
Revised Score: 38.27 [#534]
Final Score: 69.9999 [#200]

(First Thoughts: Another song that has a pretty great opening, then drops the THUMPING BEAT OF REPETITIVE MONOTONY that gives me a pounding headache.)

This song hurts because the opening is so good. The mysterious sounding music, the whispered talking, it sets you up to think youre going to hear the best song ever. For 26 seconds, this is an easy 80 point songmaybe up to the 90s, if it could keep up the ambiance.

Then that beat kicks in and completely ruins the song.

Or to put it as this song would: Then (thump) that (thump) beat (thump) kicks (thump) in (thump) and (thump) com (thump) ple (thump) tel (thump) y (thump) ruins (thump) the (thump) song (thump) (thump) (thump) (thump) (thump) (thump) (thump).

[Not-Quite-Final Thoughts: I guess I love the opening so much that I dont want to give this less than 40 points... ehhh.... fine, lets move this above 50 points to the more positive feelings than negative category. Im always excited to listen to that intro at least and its still somewhat close to greatness... if we could rid of that beat anyway.]

[Still-Not-Final: Alright, alright, I like it. I...really cant see myself moving this beyond 60 points; even if it has the best opening ever, this still has the most song-ruining-beat in the topic... but I do like it.]

[Final Thoughts: ...Ehhhh.... Im always excited to play this song, which implies that I need to give it a lot of points, but... 69.9999 is as far as Im going. There is greatness here and I like it, but I cant get past the thumping to actually move it up a tier. Lets just say this is as close to getting 70 points as possible without actually reaching that mark.

(Ive lost what page the Pulsing Beat counter was last posted on and dont particularly want to go hunt it down right now.) ]

Revised Score: 60.00 [#283]
Final Score: 69.9999 [#200]

(First Thoughts: That rapid percussion that sounds like its rattling around my head... I dont like that.)

I dont know what to make of the track. I think I mostly like it? Though as usual, I cant figure out any specific reason why...

...eh, lets bump this up to the clump of 60 point songs. The mystery is worth a small boost to the score.

[Final Thoughts: Its a very fascinating and puzzling song. I seem to love whatever synthesizer or synth-esque instrument is making the non-percussion sounds and the song commands my undivided attention, which makes me want to give it a lot of points... but I dont think I quite like it as much as everything else thats been moved up to the 70 point tier. I think Im going to have this tie with I Show You Secrets. Theyre both surprisingly fascinating tracks that I almost want to give 70 points to, but not quite ]

200 [TIE]: GIRLS WITH ATTITUDE - NOTHING IN MY DREAMS:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wcVzM-kgWWw

Nominator: rwlh (9/15)

Initial Score: 14.00 [#567]
Revised Score: 67.23 [#227]
Final Score: 69.9999 [#200]

(First Thoughts: ...Im sad that this not only isnt in last place, its not even close to being last.)

Well obviously this isnt a good song and Im not going to waste our time pretending it is. What it is, is a welcome respite from the majority of the songs in this topic. No Hitler, no suicide, no orgies, no religion, no flashbacks, no stress from trying to justify putting objectively good songs into the Void of Absolute Zero, no need to worry about a writeup (no one cares what I have to say in response to this), not even a little puppy. There is only peace.

I think I legitimately needed this song to be on the list. I was filling burned out even though I was only 10% of the way through the list, but hearing this...*trails off after being unable to find any adjectives or nouns to describe what this was*...has actually picked me back up.

For the first (but certainly not last) time this topic: You say you dont know what I like, and yet, I keep getting this feeling you know more than youre letting on...

[Final Thoughts: This is the other song where I cant tell if the nominator was aiming for last place and completely missed or what, but I do like this.

....unfortunately, as amusing as it would be to carry this song all the way to the finals, I cant quite bring myself to move it to the next tier. It repeats itself too many times and its...not quite cute or funny enough to coast to an insanely high score on those grounds. Ill always smile and be grateful that its here, but.... no, no, joining the clump of not quite 70 point songs is the highest honor I can bestow upon this.]

For the first (but certainly not last) time this topic: You say you dont know what I like, and yet, I keep getting this feeling you know more than youre letting on...

I spent probably too much time picking out songs for you. Not only did I try to give you a lot of songs that aligned with the areas you said you didn't know much about, I also browsed your ranking from last year. (Mostly the very bottom and the very top.) That said, I never try to "win" these topics by placing highly - my goal is always to expose the ranker to new music that they would hopefully enjoy. Huun Huur Tu - Chiraa-Khoor, which I didn't comment on yet, is probably the biggest example of that.

I definitely wasn't shooting for last place with Nothing In My Dreams. I had a hunch you'd actually enjoy it! That and Agata - The Cable Has No Name were probably my two biggest wildcards, where I could've seen you putting them literally anywhere. Same with Chiraa-Khoor, really.

definitely didn't do quite as good with this somunia song as the one i picked last year... originally i was actually going to pick that one virtual cat remix (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-NSknHFLuEA) before i realised i'd already picked it near the end of the bonus topic last time, and backword... honestly, i liked it, but i never really paid any attention to the actual music in it so this is definitely more than i could've really hoped for it. i still think that somunia was generally doing pretty great around this period in mid-2020 though, like until then houkago no dance floor was the only song of hers i liked really...

granted, maybe the virtual cat remix wouldn't have done very differently judging from where this has landed. i consider this a very similar song to that (especially thematically), and the visuals really complement its chill, slightly melancholic city pop vibe... if there was any song i was hoping and thought had a realistic chance at a high score in my set, it was this

but yeah besides this honestly i was kinda expecting to get wiped out by the 7/10s which i guess is still technically possible as long as more 9s can be added on with this much more limited set than what i had last time. pretty glad to especially see some of my more risky picks still going. like a certain bear guitarist's song, i expected that out in like the 30s because it's so extremely rough

Hbthebattle posted...
You didn't- two songs tied for 200, so one of them would have been 199.
no, that's 4 songs that filled the positions between 203 and 200

Yeah, in the event of a tie all songs share the highest possible rank... so 203, 202, and 201 are all considered to be 200 (hence how we have 203 songs in the top 200)

...except for those in dead last anyway, which got to share the lowest possible result, but that was a bit of cheating on my part. Either way, theres definitely some problems going on with Toxtricity / Mycros nominations... the countdown in topic has him with 6 remaining songs, but the Remaining Song List says he only has 4 left. Seems like a problem with the in topic count though, as my records definitely show 11 songs with scores & eliminations:

===============

TOXTRICITY / MYCROS SONGS:

Decisive Battle: 81.00 [R#21]
Plasma: 50.19 [#467]
Gatling Carapaces: 50.36 [#460]
Meltdown: 54.08 [#401]
Dark Force: 57.75 [#383]
The Roots of Coincidence: 61.90 [#300]
Rasdan: 62.40 [#291]
Chromatic Garden: 67.35 [#254]
Mutant Standard: 68.85 [#221]
Light It Up On Me: 69.95 [#207]
Guerreros: 69.9999 [#200]

===============

...so the 4/15 remaining is probably accurate. Djuelurbans listed as having 7 songs remaining in topic, but the list shows 8 remaining; again, the list is accurate there.

Another in topic error, CPUs listed as only having 4 songs remaining but the Remaining Song List counts 5. Remaining list is accurate again.

Same thing with Player_0 (topic lists him as only have 4 songs remaining, but there are 5. Remaining Song List appears to be correct.)

Ehh, I may need to take tomorrow off to get this sorted out. At the very least, itll be a late start.

I'm always confused whether those remaining counts include or exclude the song being dropped...

In theory, it's supposed to show where the eliminated song ranks out of every song from that source. 13/15 would mean the song is in 13th place for that nominator, with 12 songs remaining.

In practice, the numbers are wrong enough to appear completely arbitrary.

EDIT: ...Well my new count says there's only 194 songs remaining, so I'm going to sleep and try this again tomorrow.

Honestly, Excel is just useful to know in general. Could be a good excuse to learn it.

Well, it would be helpful and it would be good to actually learn something relevant for once... I'll try looking into it before the inevitable sequel topic to this.

Went over things in a different way this morning to try and find any errors--started at the top of my notes and wrote down every song that hasn't been eliminated yet. And still got 198. So there is a fatal error somewhere in this topic and I really must thank Paul for getting me to find this out now before it has a chance to snowball any further.

The error is in Post #386:

253: Frums - End of System

251 [TIE] - BMtH - Follow You

251 [TIE] - Fair to Midland - Bright Bulbs & Sharp Tools

251 [TIE] - Skindred - Rat Race

Miscounted on the tied songs, those should be ranked 250, which caused an off-by-one error. So every song from that point on is actually one rank better than listed at the moment. On the plus side, the Remaining Song List is accurate and we'll apparently be resuming later this evening with song #198:
