A 60-year-old woman was assaulted by two suspects at a Brooklyn subway station last Friday after she told the pair to wear face masks, police said. The beatdown occurred just outside an elevator at the Atlantic Avenue-Barclays Center subway station at about 12:20 p.m., cops said. Before entering the elevator, the victim told the assailants a man and a woman that they could not ride with her unless they used face coverings, authorities said. In a surveillance video released by police, the man can be seen slipping past the victim, who then tries to stop the woman from entering the elevator. The two women then get into a scuffle before the man exits the elevator and wallops the victim, who falls to the ground, the video shows. As the woman is down, the man continues to punch her, according to the footage. Both suspects, believed to be in their late teens, fled and were still being sought by police as of late Wednesday.

The current expectation is do not confront other people over mask wearing or lack thereof if you value your health. Let the authorities handle noncompliance.

I feel bad for the old woman, but seriously dont try and be the mask police here. She could have let the ride first, but it sounds like she was physically trying to restrict them from getting on. Thats never a good idea to do with strangers.

I hope she recovers, but she could have avoided this.

Again, I dont disagree. But dont put yourself in a situation that could lead to you getting beaten.

I work out at the gym and wear my mask. Most do, some dont. When someone works out on the machine next to me without a mask I dont run up to them and try and block them from using the machine.

its common sense. I agree she shouldnt have to wait, but rather than try and confront someone who clearly isnt going to listen to you, maybe dont put yourself in harms way? Just a thought.

I confronted someone at the liquor store I go to about not wearing a mask. The next day the store had a sign on the front door saying masks are required. So, confronting people about it can work out. I think the fact she was already on the elevator means they should have been the ones to wait for her to finish her ride.

There's a reason shops told their staff to not confront people refusing to wear their mask. For too many are utter monsters who will attack or even kill you for daring to ask them to wear a mask. It's just not worth the risk, so stay away from them.

Absolutely not the woman's fault though and hopefully the pair get a lengthy jail sentence.

She should have asked politely, which it doesn't sound like she did, it sounds more like a demand. At that point when they refused, she should have said "fine, I'll take the next one" and just waited.

Her vigilante attitude about the situation caused unnecessary and unfortunate consequences.

Her request was perfectly normal, but when they refused to comply she should have backed off.

Not wearing masks in closed areas and purposely getting close to people should be considered assault.

It's not simply about being the "mask police". They were putting her health at risk even before they physically beat her.

There are many things one shouldnt have to do. But we do it anyway because there are bad people who dont act with our best interests in mind.

I've been in elevator scenarios where someone tries to share an elevator with me and I just jump out. Both of us were wearing masks too, but I'm still not gonna share an elevator.

Lady should have just let them take the elevator.

It isn't right or fair, but it gives you the best chance to be safe.

It's what you have to do to deal with scummy people. I hope they're both arrested and convicted over this.
