I like how somebody signs a $500m contract and you act like the player is the crazy one. Personally, I'm more of the opinion that paying an athlete $500m is crazy. I hope he's worth the money.

He's turned the Chiefs from one of the most irrelevant and forgettable NFL franchises into an annual super bowl contender. He's 100% worth the money

Sportsball players should not be making that much.

The people that employ them make far more. The revenue they generate is far greater. If anything the share they get is less than it should be since they are the main attraction. $50M a year isn't even that crazy but people need headlines so the media will clickbait the $500M figure everywhere like he's getting it all at once.

In what world is $50m a year not a crazy sum lol

put boxing aside, by football/soccer or basketball standards 50m is unreal. $40m in basketball for example is eye watering lol

It's all relative. If your employer is worth billions, you work in a multi billion dollar industry, and you generate billions in revenue with your performance, then you are certainly entitled to a significant piece of the pie.

I mean does Robert Downey Jr not deserve to be paid tens of millions for helping to generate billions for Disney? Same concept.

Um some footballers and tennis players etc make way more than that in a year. Granted not all in wages. Do you follow sports. This $50M a year is not just flat wages is it. There has to be some kinda breakdown of that number.

Entertainers (includes sportsball players) should make a livable wage like anyone else not exuberant amounts of money for playing a game.

Teachers struggle.

That's not how it works. Though teachers should definitely get paid more. But most teachers are Government workers so its up to the powers that be they get paid properly, not consumers. The consumers are why the sports stars etc get paid so much.

Consumers don't set pricing but they should have an issue with it.

If every ticket to every sporting event cost 1 cent, ad revenue from televised sports would still be enough to pay players millions. Sportsball is as profitable as it is not because each consumer pays a lot for it (though that helps), but because of how incredibly popular it is.

Considering how many sports franchises aren't profitable, the answer seems somewhat apparent. And if the government stopped subsidizing sports with American tax dollars, we'd pretty quickly see shit change.

The thing is most actually don't (although it's possible that they cook their books as well). Major sports franchises are often more a vanity item for the very rich than a legitimate moneymaker, or the money is made when the franchise is re-sold. The profitable sports franchises tend to be at the lower levels where they aren't paying ludicrous salaries.

Entertainers generate profit, teachers -- excluding private schools -- do not. If you generate profit, it's easy to justify paying people a certain rate. After all, they're theoretically bringing in that money.

And, frankly, many teachers are overpaid. Not all of them are in dire straits, some make great money while performing abysmally AND they have basically guaranteed employment. Even after sexually assaulting students, some teachers have been on payroll -- often paid for not teaching at all -- before potentially being fired (and others are just sent to another school in the district)

Most are. And, as previously mentioned, most seem to have almost guaranteed employment no matter how badly they act, which is a perk not enjoyed in any other field.

The major exception to all of this is private schools and kindergarten/pre-k where the pay can be low. However, in the rest, the starting salary is often better than comparable fields in for-profit sectors (ie, the space where you can justify paying people more because they're bringing in revenue)

Yes.

Teachers that don't perform their duties are fired after being provided a few rounds of warnings and evaluations.

Teachers that assault students are fired, lose their license, and go to prison.
