i REALLY like visual novels

(but generally only ones that got their translations from about 2004 to 2011, because college fucking sucked and cut my attention afterwards)

I don't like them at all, but mostly because of the lack of player agency.

If there's ALSO some intermixed gameplay then they're ok

Some more than others.

Ever played Demonbane? I keep meaning to play it some time, the setting sounds interesting, and it crossed over with some other stuff including a Super Robot Wars game.

If you like those, the rest of the Zero Escape series (999 was the first of the trilogy) and Ghost Trick (a Capcom made VN / puzzle game) are worth a look.

I tend to get confused about what is considered a visual novel and what is seen as more of an adventure game

Three Fourths Home I liked a lot and that really seems like a VN to me, but then something like Gone Home has exploration so does that make it not a VN? What about all the narrative games that people like to call walking simulators?

everyone loves stuff like ace attorney, some love stuff like 999/VLR, but very few have even heard of other stuff uchikoshi did (like ever17! which i consider wholly superior to the first 999, though very similar in nature, because holy shit uchikoshi does not revolutionize his own tropes. see never7 for the oldest example of oh no time loop!)

Lokarin posted...

understandable, there are plenty that are pseudo-games though (the entire rance series, all eushully stuff, etc)

they are more comparable to books/choose your own adventure novels than games, narratively, so traditional games fans are hard to get invested in but anyone else is even harder to get borderline interested in

got through the first route, and up to the bad end of the route of that rich chick. i know vaguely what happens in the rest because of demonbane power level flexing tho, will get back to it eventually

they are absolutely visual novels with some ADV elements

if you enjoyed 999, you can't go wrong with ever17 (slightly older, but i think tackles the overall mystery aspect better, tho 999 has better characters), and if you want something not uchikoshi but similar, root double feels VERY much like a 999/ever17 vn

https://store.steampowered.com/agecheck/app/438130/

other than that, i fear i would just go down my personal favs in order; i really do think Baldr Sky and G Senjou no Maou are worth experiencing for everyone, tho

Lokarin posted...
My still favourite is Long Live the Queen
only did like 2 playthroughs of that and i can attest it is very good if you want princess maker-style character development

(if you havent heard of it, princess maker 2 is like long live the queen but more relaxed schedule wise but theres something like 100~ different endings you can aim for. not a vn, but very similar. old ass game and never got officially released in eng till a few years ago iirc. official tl got unofficially leaked tho)

jp tends to call vn and adventure game one and the same, honestly, but if you've played enough vns you start to recognize aspects that are shared in all of them

imo a lot of it comes down to presentation; a lot of games have vn presentation (persona series, nepnep games, esp agarest games) even though they are generally presented as "normal" games

the exact boundaries of what is and isnt a vn is arbitrary imo. if its inspired by vns or borrows aspects for its storytelling, its usually pretty easily to tell

cant speak for borderlands spinoffs, but i can very much agree its possible

a LOT of people demarcate visual novels as not being "real" games but i heavily disagree; it's an aspect that may be dominant (rance games) or non-dominant (persona games), but the influence is usually very easy to see

as a vn fan i really dont know how to feel about katawa shoujo

it was aight but a lot of people (not including you here) act like it's revolutionary, when it's... very bland and standard, honestly speaking. not even to a bad degree; MOST visual novels are bland and standard. this one just got extreme attention. it's like the sword art online of eroge. we're like wtf but muvluvs better and they're like katawa shoujo is the peak of storytelling

Monopoman posted...

i'd say danganronpa has the average amount of gameplay for an ADV game trying to appeal to mainstream audiences and not just eroge fans

(i should disclose my only interaction with DR is the somethingawful forum translations eons ago when that was the only way we could get anything DR related, but i had an overall positive opinion of it then. will probably play the others eventually, even though i know all the main series plot points)

those plus Dusk Hotel are the basically only interaction one could have hoped to have had with visual novels in the DS era. all are great, just us vn fans kinda hope others would branch out beyond that, u know

Any text heavy game is a task for me to get through to say the least. I wouldn't mind playing more of them but they would either need to be on console or have really good font size on PC, as well as, be interesting enough for me to put the effort into getting through.

visual novel is not a unique and exclusive qualifier because it describes the presence of certain things and not the absence of others

games can also have visual novel aspects without being visual novels

I enjoy VNs, as you are aware from a certain series of topics, but I have not been playing them as of late because this poor laptop is old enough to be asking for the brains of the living, at this point.

The last one I played was a tongue-in-cheek short called Main Character Simulator.
