Was at a point where I wanted an anime that was long and could be semi background noise.

And man DBZ and beyond is so bad. IMO the series as a whole would have been best ending with either DragonBall or Frieza. Everything after that was just stupid over the top BS. It seems they are pulling people for Goku to fight out of their asses. It lacks any type of character development or true story arch. Its like this show is just for Commercials and games/toys.

I tried, it's just not good. The buu saga was bad too. The cell saga was entertaining but the story really should have ended with Frieza on Namek. Everything after is essentially an anime version of WWE

Huge fan of OG dragon ball, and Z is ok I guess just for nostalgias sake. I think Z would be better if there was less fighting and more character interaction. My favorite Z episodes are like... gohan going to high school and then his small bit with videl and interacting with the rest of the characters before the tournament :X...

Yeah, Frieza would have been a fine stopping point, although I guess it'd be weird for them to semi-retcon so much and not do more with it. Part of my problem with DBZ as a whole is that they just return to Earth after Namek, whereas it would have been cooler had they done more with the whole space set-up. Which reminds me that I still someday want to see all of DBGT.

DBS I've watched a so-so amount, and I just never felt compelled to watch the whole thing.

dragonball super started out really bad, then around the universe six tournament got good, then got bad again during the tournament of power, then got good at the end of ToP.

Then the moro arc started and went strong and then went really really bad.

The movie recaps stretched into episodic form don't really have a reason to exist.

I enjoyed the Zamasu arc. It doesn't make sense, but I still found it entertaining. Zamasu is just a really entertaining character.

The Universe Tournament arc dragged in the way dragon ball drags but it had a very satisfying ending.

It's an adventure anime.
Adventure anime are a hell of a lot better than battle anime. Battle anime are by far the worst type of anime.
This is why Pilaf Saga is the pinnacle of the series and everything else is actually downhill.

This is also why Pokemon's generally downhill after Gen 2. The first games were heavily adventure driven (being largely open ended on how you can complete them) while the games after Gen 3 start to railroad the player, eventually leading the abysmal Gen 7 and Gen 8 games.

Final Fantasy also falls into this trope. You see as the post-2000 games start to become serialized (really the issue started with IX, but we don't talk about that) the games quality goes into the shitter until we eventually get XV, which is a distinctly different genre from the first dozen entries in the series.

But all 3 of these series live off of their momentum, that's why you see so many 2000s era Dragon Ball games, despite no Dragon Ball anime airing in this decade in Japan (yes, the west technically has the majority of Z air here). Final Fantasy still remains popular despite it not really having any of its identity anymore, and Pokemon manages to still be one of the highest selling IPs despite the fact that minimal effort is put into its development (this is very obvious when you look at the early prototypes of Sword).

That happened like three times max, DB is way more adventure focused because in Z they can fly across the planet in a minute.

DBS is hot trash. Even with DB/Z questionable standards it was always entertaining, but until the latter parts (and movies) DBS couldn't even pull of the bare minimum of action packed dazzle one is to expect from this series.

Despite being an old fan I couldn't even half ass and mindlessly watch all of it. Since I already watched ROF movie I skipped all that in the anime version, also skipped U6 and Goku Black, though I did read the manga versions just because that was faster. I didn't pick up the anime until the TOP recruitment arc when Freeza came back. So I only watched the TOP, which was a hot mess, but unlike the rest of this garbage managed to entertain in large parts like the old series did. I still read the manga but oh boy.

No. That was pulled straight out of lame fan fiction people had been doing for years. Evil Kaioshin. Evil "Goku". Give me a break. The manga version wasn't that much different in the basic plot and that was bad. So I didn't "miss out" at all. Though I'll say the manga has (had) better scaling back then. Even that has gone out the window.

The unedited version of Dragon Ball Z Kai is awesome. They could've maybe left an hour or two of more filler in... I liked some of the added stuff when Gohan was ditched in the wilderness by Piccolo, and when Goku and Piccolo were forced by Chichi to get driver's licenses. Super was fine. It had some ups and downs, but I liked it. I normally hate the tournament parts of DB, but that last one in Super had me very intrigued.

If you think DBZ sucks then you have no idea what a Shonen Anime is. The entire point of the genre is for the main characters to get more and more powerful to face more powerful foes.

I like Dragon Ball a lot it's a fun ride, but it's nothing like DBZ they might as well be drastically different shows. Super just picks up where DBZ ends and it does a solid job of continuing the franchise.

To say Z has no character development is a falsehood. Vegeta, Gohan and Piccolo undergo major character changes. First Vegeta was an arrogant power-hungry prick. By the end, he's swallowed his pride for the good of the universe.
Piccolo went from Demon King Piccolo's heir apparent who vowed to Kill Goku to a wise mentor for the next generation. Gohan grew up and learned how to use his anger/inner potential for his benefit. While raised the son of a fighter, he chose his own path and became a student.

It's also a falsehood to say there are no stoy arcs. Each saga has a clear beginning, middle, and climatic finish. The Freeza saga would have been a poor ending as both Gohan and Vegeta hadn't concluded their arcs. DB would be incomplete without the following.

You're free to not enjoy DBZ and to cricitize the quality of its character arcs/stories. But you're telling lies when you say they do not exist.

When Vegeta sacrifices himself to try to stop Buu it's one of the best moments in the entire show period. This is a huge development for Vegeta and it shows that he has really changed.

I agree DBZ has a ton of great moments and character development, I think Kai does a much better job with DBZ because DBZ's biggest problem is countless filler episodes and 4-5 episodes of "powering up" or "taunting", when they cut a lot of that out the show gets far better.
