It kind of sucks how it seems easier to find consoles in stock compared to decent GPUs in recent years.

I always pick the worst time to build or upgrade a PC. :(

Decent GPUs should be way easier to find than PS5s/Xbox Series (I still can't believe they called it that) right now

Last I checked it's not hard to find a decent GPU, but it's hard to find a decent GPU that is reasonably priced thanks to crypto-mining. That was a few years ago so maybe prices aren't so inflated these days.

The whole build and upgrade angle is one of the biggest things that's kept me from going more in on PC gaming over the years.

Any recommendations then?
Not sure if I should buy something now, or wait until Nvidia's and AMD's new GPUs are more readily available.

That's what happened to me with my last build. I ended up settling for a lesser GPU due to better cards being out of stock, and third party sellers inflating the price.

Honestly, it's not so bad. And depending on how often you upgrade, then it's no different than buying a new console every few years. And it's even more comparable now that "Pro" versions of consoles exist.

Maybe for some. Though, I usually dont buy the pro, unless its already out by the first time I get the console. I would probably get one if I needed to replace a system, but that hasnt come up yet. The only one Im thinking about getting in the newer switch. Even then, I might not. So, I feel Id definitely have to spend more on computer parts. Not to mention, Id also have to switch it...

It's really hard to recommend that anyone buy a 2000 series Nvidia card right now. If you're able to, I'd recommend holding off.

I love PC but I hate how you always need to buy new crap for it just to keep up with the latest games. I have a semi-recent laptop and Rogue Legacy 2 friggin' chugs of all things.

I have a $1000 PC from 2013 and I can still practically play anything, although new stuff with less fidelity. Only the past two years have I felt the age of my system.

I might upgrade my card soon.

going from a gtx 760 to an rtx 3060 would at least be a worthwhile upgrade to me

The gpu market has rebounded quite bit since the mining craze. This next cycle looks like it will be an even better value per performance than the Radeon 5000 and rtx 2000 (which was especially inflated) generation.

Recently power supplies were in a rough spot and I had trouble finding a reasonable motherboard earlier in the year

Cool. I built mine 4 years ago and this topic had me wondering if I was supposed to be upgrading it because it plays everything fine and I'm usually one of the first to load in.

AMD's new gpus aren't out yet and rona + scalpers have made Nvidia's new gpus very hard to get. AMD's gpus launch on the 18th and I believe Nvidia is supposed to launch a gpu on the 17th. Fully expect AMD's new gpus to sell out super fast, just like Nvidia's did. Personally, I'm waiting for a gpu that's less than $500, since that won't really fit into my budget.

AFAIK, I don't think you have to upgrade until it starts slowing down or having trouble with certain games, tbh. Though, I think it's happening slower than it use to. But I do know some people that upgrade throughout the years to make sure it never gets to a point where it slows down or whatever. But you would have to know what to upgrade, and have the extra to spend on it periodically...
