Poll of the Day > Alex Trebek is irreplaceable... but who do you think is going to replace him?

Who do you think will host Jeopardy in Alex's absence?

Bonus question: How long do you think it'll take before we see an announcement? Will it be:
-A callous couple of days?
-A mildly respectful week?
-A modestly respectful fortnight?
-A respectful month or two?

There were a bunch of names that I heard floated around as well, but I couldn't find a citation. (And other than Ken Jennings (who works for the show now) and Betty White, the other champs are speculative. Austin Rogers would also be fun, but he's more of a fringe choice.)

Betty White is nearly 100 years old. They're not going to pick her.

Ken Jennings would be the obvious choice given that he's been working for them lately. James Holzhauer would do an excellent job, but he's too much of a funny man or a showman, which goes against what the show is supposed to be, and what Trebek saw himself as.

He can't be replaced... But a "Jeopardy celebrity" like Ken Jennings is about as good as they could hope for. A beloved, familiar face. The problem is being a good contestant doesn't equal being a good host based on familiarity with the audience alone. Drew Carey seems to have replaced iconic pervert Bob Barker pretty well though.

For some reason I think Tracy Morgan would be such an ironic choice that it would be entertaining.

Well, in his case he works with the show already, he became famous from the show (which works in his favor), and he seems to be liked for his involvement with the show in general. He's also 46, which means he'd be able to provide a reasonably long tenure -- at least 20 years, maybe over 30. When it comes to hosts, you kinda want to think long-term.

The one thing is he doesn't have much of a sense of humor, although this is the kind of show where the host doesn't necessarily need to shine.

He probably wouldn't be able to articulate the clues quickly and clearly enough.

Lokarin posted...

I seriously doubt that. Eddie is 59 right now (which partially limits his tenure) and he's in the kind of place where he just doesn't seem likely to get involved in an ongoing commitment like this. He's a movie guy, not a tv guy.

Tom is 64. Even if he was willing to forego his film career (which seems unlikely), his tenure would be somewhat limited.

Drew wouldn't be bad, but people see him more as a funny guy and I don't think the Jeopardy audience would really be up for that. But I think he could keep it serious as well if that is what they wanted him to do. So while I don't think DC would do it, I could see him be able to do it and be decent with it.

My vote was for Ken Jennings however.

The problems with Anderson Cooper is that he already has a lot of other projects. He's also 53, which is starting to push it a little at the age level. It's probably the absolute upper-end of how old you want the new host to be, unless you don't plan on running the show forever.

He would probably be a decent host, though.

tbh, he has an inherent goofiness to him that doesn't feel like a good fit. He's the kind of guy who works for a "fun" game show rather than a serious one.

I'm also not sure he can talk clearly enough at a very fast speed.

That's great! The last time I saw him on the show was (I believe) an April Fool's episode from maybe 4-5 years ago.

IT's kind of amazing that Bob outlived Alex Trebek too. I mean he's easily 95 years old!

She wasn't even a good hostess on Wheel of Fortune, though. She stumbled over her lines and talking to guests.

And that's taking her age off the table (she's 63) and the fact that she'd be a poor fit for the show in general, it's not exactly promoting from within. There are a lot of people who actually work on Jeopardy who could be promoted from within. She just happens to work at the same network for a different show and one where, although it probably wouldn't take much to replace her, she'd be missed.

Honestly, even if Pat died, I doubt Vanna would be asked to step up full-time in his shoes, let alone take over for the host of another show.
