I don't know for sure if Biden will completely cave into R pressure or not - honestly, I legit have no idea how much he believes in reaching across the aisle and how much of a spine he has or not - but I wouldn't look to his public speeches for evidence either way. The public likes bipartisanship and it's what they want to hear. Biden has to deliver that message. Bernie would have delivered the same message.

I don't care about petty "revenge" or whatever against Trumpers. I want SOME progressive legislation aimed at helping middle and lower income working Americans. It would literally help Trump's base.

I'm torn between limiting myself to sympathy and being blunt, and at the end of the day, I guess I'm kind of a dick.

Corrik, when people tell you "character counts", this is the kind of thing they're talking about. From what you say, Trump's constant, baseless conspiracy theory hype is now driving a wedge between you and your significant other. I do hope you are able to work through this; I don't want bonds between my fellow Americans and their loved ones to be rent asunder because of politics. It shouldn't be happening. But, as long as we Americans keep giving Trump and people like him - people that are glad to drive us apart if it garners them support - as long as we keep giving them our ears, our dollars, and our votes, it will keep happening. It won't always be you that it happens to; it might not always be happening to people you know. But when politicians foster division to build a power base, people end up divided.

I don't think anybody here wants Trump's base punished. What people mean by "vengeance" is punishing the people who need to be punished, ie, the shitheads in his administration who blatantly broke the law and abused their office for their own personal gain. At most, some also want people who didn't necessarily break any laws appointed by Trump removed from their offices, which is still a far cry away from wanting to harm random Joes that didn't do anything "wrong" but support him

I fully admit Biden has a lot of flaws, but hearing him speak is almost always reassuring. I have no clue how much he can possibly get done with a republican senate and a 6-3 minority in the supreme court, but hearing him speak at least makes me feel like things are going to get better.

Biden and Harris both had great speeches. Refreshing to see something that aims to unite us, especially after 4 years of such divisiveness from our President. I don't think Trump ever left campaign mode (and I think that's part of why he did so well without actually doing anything of significance). We've still got a lot of work to do, but it feels like we're taking a step forward here.

Trump was also vocally pro choice before. You could argue that he only changed his stance on abortion when he needed to court the evangelical vote.

I truly do not understand the fear of divisiveness, and importance that people place on "unity", a president who wants to push those things just wants you all to stop paying attention so they don't have to worry about being expected to do anything, or any backlash to the things they do or don't do. If people are ever 'unified' in this country it is always in one of two directions- completely tuning out, or unifying in jingoism like after 9/11. Neither one is any good for the country.

then why are we even a republic? why are there states? why do we have an electoral college? all of these are things that are about correctly identifying we DO NOT have a united country. there are massively different economic, geographical, cultural differences at play and the basis of the country is to stop it from becoming united. It is inherently supposed to be a divided nation. The only unifying thing about the country is supposed to be that it comes together for defense.

We are the UNITED States of America.

Americans aren't supposed to be identical, but they're also not supposed to see each other as the enemy.
