At a time when I didn't even know what blackface was.

I remember a couple of times throughout my life I sometimes joke about painting or tattooing myself black, and saying or self identifying as black.

It wasn't only until Justin Trudeau was revealed to have done blackface himself did I hear of the concept, and it wasn't until a this year did I even research or ask about the concept.

Honestly, it's one of those tropes that's outdated that it needs to be explained before people can be offended. And it's also one of those ridiculously arbitrary things both because you don't see the same outrage around racial impersonations despite there being similar histories and since it's an all-encompassing concept rather than something specifically targeting negative portrayals. If somebody is dressing up like a race or group to make fun of that race or group, it should be universally bad instead of only being bad if it involves black people.

Here goes Zeus making baseless generalizations again. Have you not heard of yellow face?

What about the pushback whenever Hollywood tries to whitewash films that take place in Asia? Or whenever a cis person is cast for a trans role?

You hear about blackface more because that the flavor of racism America seems to prefer.

Basically no one gets angry when people dress up outside of their race unless they are doing blackface.

Indeed. As such, we should expect somebody to similarly come under fire for doing brownface, instead of... Trudeau coming under fire for doing brownface. Huh. That sentence sure didn't go where you expected it to, eh?

In my opinion, it's best to avoid any type of reference to anything that may be deemed disrespectful to someone.

Really depends on the context and what the value of that reference is. Pretty much everything is going to be disrespectful to someone at some point, and it's hardly feasible to avoid saying anything altogether for that sake. Instead, just try to be cognizant of your audience and how they're likely to react and consider whether or not offending them is worthwhile in that instance.

Blackface... generally isn't going to be worthwhile. There's not much value in that particular bit of expression that can't be gained by doing almost anything else (all you really get is "exercising muh rights," which you can exercise in equal measure by drawing a flower on your cheek instead).

I remember once or twice in my life having long hair and trying makeup on my face. What story is real and what isn't? The world may never know.
