ok, personally my favorite is personally natty daddy's it gets me where i need to be going quickly enough. those are in cans. however something like olde english that has the same alcohol content in a bottle at least the high gravity one does, leaves me feeling like i didn't even get any kind of buzz at all.

i even drank the thing through a straw for maximum effect and i feel normal. its always been like this with bottled beer vs. canned beer. the only malt beer that i can say that's bottled that i will get a buzz from is steel reserve, and only if i drank it through a straw. the cans for that brand are even better.

i decided to try something a little different tonight, in R.I. the closest store to me sells natty daddy's for $5 for two cans, its different in MA there are stores that sell them for $1.10-$.1.40 each so R.I. is ridiculous in that regard, but I take the plunge every now and then. however, tonight i noticed they had a high gravity version of the olde english for $2.88 and after downing it, i feel next to nothing even though it has the same alcohol content as two Natty Daddy's canned.

not sure if this has something to do with a difference between bottled and canned beer. or something else entirely. i am no alcohol expert, so was hoping someone can explain this to me.

What else is in there? Did you drink coffee beforehand, pop?
And, what's the APV you're looking at?

At the end of the day, alcohol is a depressant, so, if you've had any sort of upper beforehand (mostly caffeine) you won't feel the effects of alcohol until it hits you like a train. Caffeine is in your system for a full 6 hours as well, so it depends on when it happens.

@shadowsword87

oh wow, you brought some good insight that i was unaware of.

i drink a lot of coffee and caffeine related beverages daily. i don't drink alcohol daily however. i typically fill a 12 pot worth of coffee and drink 4 cups of that worth three times throughout the day in the cup i drink out of.

i do definitely find it strange that cans effect me more so over glass or plastic bottles by the same APV value. like natty daddy's are 8.0% 25 ounces each. this olde english plastic bottle is the same exact volume, except its 42 ounces, only 8 lower than two cans of the brand i prefer, yet i feel nowhere near the way i do from that brand.

its always been like that, however i thought i might just give it a try because this particular brand of the olde english reached the same volume as two cans of Natty's, just 8 ounces lower. however i could feel while i was drinking it that i wasn't going to reach that desired effect and was drinking it faster than i normally drink because i wasn't feeling like it was doing anything.

That's not really how it works.

It's not a straight up/down scale, as much as it is they "up" and "down" you in different ways. Which is why there's drinks like Red Bull and Vodka that are basically pushing in both directions at the same time, and wind up giving you a different sensation than either alone. Or for a more extreme example, it's how a speedball works (cocaine as the upper, heroin/morphine/other opioids as the downer).

It's also why I'm usually a hyperactive drunk - my drink of choice is usually bourbon and coke, so the caffeine and booze combines to give me a warm fuzzy buzz while still giving me the energy from the caffeine and sugar rush.

Nah, I hate Red Bull in all its forms.

I don't actually drink energy drinks of any kind, I find them all kind of disgusting.

No it's not exact, but, it's a good rule of thumb and something to remember in asking why one day one beer will just be flavored water you after you eat some pasta and are chill, and another will absolutely hammer you if you've only drank coffee all day.

It's a fair thing to consider.

It was mentioned a lot when 4loko was banned, and I think caffeine effect vs alcohol effect is a good reference point considering they're both legal drugs that people consume a lot of.

Neither of those cases actually have anything to do with caffeine, though - in one case you've provided yourself with a base of other material in your stomach that is slowing alcohol absorption while in the other case you're drinking on an empty stomach which will always lead alcohol to hit you harder.

You'd actually get mostly the same effect if you ate a big pasta meal and then immediately popped caffeine tabs before drinking, versus not having a single ounce of caffeine for a week but not eating all day before going out eating. The big meal is going to soak what you're drinking, not eating all day will allow you to get drunker faster on fewer drinks (and can save you money if you're a poor college student looking to get hammered as cheaply as possible).

FourLoko's issue wasn't strictly the caffeine - it was the fact that it had four times the amount of alcohol as you'd expect (hence the name). And that the synergistic effects of antagonistic drugs (again, similar to why/how speedballs tend to be so fatal) can in and of themselves be more dangerous (increasing the odds of things like seizures or blood pressure issues).

Caffeinated alcohol CAN keep you from blacking out (which in turn will prevent you from realizing just how drunk you are, which can increase the odds of alcohol poisoning), but it doesn't really "counteract" the buzz. It just gives you an even more unnatural feeling buzz, as you're getting most of the positives of both at once without the negatives of either (again, the main reason why people do speedballs in the first place, why their so addictive, and why their withdrawal hits much harder).

I don't drink cheap but if you have access to the 15packs of Founders Centennial IPA, it's quite the bargain at around $20.
