Playing Aokana on Switch. This is a dangerous thing, I already feel myself reverting to my uguu anime waifus days of high school and getting attached to these characters. Only at Episode 3. All of the characters are great so far, except Aoi's voice is hard to hear because she mumbles so goddamn much.

And apparently Aokana Extra1 is coming out soon on Steam for Mashiro. I'll wait for that to hit Switch but I'm excited.

What are other big ones I'm missing? Prefer to play on Vita/Switch. I've heard people recommend the Grisaia Trilogy, but apparently the removal of scenes extends beyond H-scenes and actually gets rid of jokes and plot points.

I'm playing one called The Letter right now, horror themed, pretty good.

Danganronpa is outstanding, as is the Ace Attorney series, assuming those count.

Ah yeah, I'm not counting DR or Ace Attorney, they are a bit more gameplay infused. I'm talking pure VNs here. DR1 was a good time. I heard DR3 kinda shits all over everything so i've lost interest in DR2, though I own it on Android.

The House in Fata Morgana is my favorite, and I probably won't be the last to recommend it. It's on Vita, I think.

Of the other stuff on your list. Devil on G-String was pretty good too. Clannad is basically universally loved, and iirc Planetarian is not very popular but quite well-liked among people who read it. No comment on the rest.

Ive read a few, but not too many. My favorites are Katawa Shoujo and Fate/Stay Night. Fate/Stay Night is probably the biggest one youre missing if youve never read it considering all the anime, games and other stuff the series has expanded to.

I never played Aokana but I've played quite a few VN's.

Definitely recommend Utawarerumono. Several of the other ones mentioned are also great, but Utawarerumono is also one of of my absolute favorites and it's probably got less people who have played it to vouch for it.

utawarerumono is one i'm the most interested in but it being 3 games is a little daunting to start.

I'll probably play DDLC or Planeterian next, those are supposed to be shorter.

I'm going through Utawarerumono myself. Really liked Prelude to the Fallen, so far though Mask of Deception has not really impressed me, though I'm only at the 5th battle stage so I'll keep playing.

Danganronpa V3 is the best one, people who hate on it misunderstood the ending (or they understood the ending and are just salty) . DR1 is easily the worst of the three, if you enjoyed that there's no chance you won't like the other two because they are big improvements.

The House in Fata Morgana is available on PS4 and PC, one of if not my favorite game of all time.

You have Fatal Twelve on your list which I think is excellent and heavily underplayed.

Umineko is probably the end all be all, but harder to get your hands on. It's on Steam but that version...eh. Personally I bought it on Steam and then went and downloaded the fan optimized version of the game with the voice acting and much better art. Bullet to my head this may surpass Fata Morgana as my favorite game, depending on the mood. This is an investment though, depending on your reading speed potentially around the 120 hour mark.

I really like Raging Loop which came out last year. People ofter refer to it as "Werewolf Mafia". Never even played regular Mafia but that seems on point.

It actually does look pretty neat! I was being a little facetious, I have played some on my own like Doki Doki and Death Mark. The medium actually does horror very well.

And I'm case someone wants to get onto me about the Umineko art thing, I literally just played the Saku content last night in it's original art firm and still had a wonderful time! However, that doesn't mean I would ever actually choose that if given the option.

Mask of Deception is definitely the weakest of the series but it's also basically a prologue to Mask of Truth. I was at least a fan of the beginning myself but some segments throughout the game do drag a lot especially if you aren't big on the SoL style scenes.

Realistically though, people's opinions are gonna vary, I definitely came on too hard there.

I think if you took an actual mass poll of players (excluding the people who are fans from just SA LPS), the one that would actually end up the favorite is DR2. Definitely understand that as well, and even took that stance myself for a while.

That case had the issue where it was not only supposed to be easy in the first place, but it was meant to be easy for people who don't actually read English as a first language.

Also feel the need to, just in case, state that DR3 and DRV3 are different things. If you were to look up DR3 you would not find the video game.

That reminds me of something that bugged me in DR2- where is Hope's Peak Academy supposed to be? Most characters have Japanese names, but they also act as if Japanese is a foreign language none of them speak. Is this a quirk of the translation, or is the cast canonically not Japanese?

(For the record, I've played 1&2. I think 1 had a slightly better cast and overall plot, but 2 had better cases and probably told its arc story better. Honestly, they're both great. I'm currently playing UDG before I move onto the anime and then V3. I'm not hearing good things about the DR3 dub though, which is unfortunate as I don't normally like watching subs)

It's a translation thing.

As much as people give Ace Attorney guff for "EAT YOUR HAMBURGERS APOLLO", that kind of thing does clean up wierd quirks like that.

I rather like Ace Attorney's half-assed relocation. It's like they did a genuinely bad job at first, then just decided to run with it and have fun with this weirdly Japan-centric bit of Los Angeles.

I mean, 1-1 forced the localization to decide where the game takes place, and it honestly isn't that pertinent in the first game. I'm sure they didn't expect it to take off the way it did!

But I do enjoy how they continue to make it work in each game.

Probably not for most. Some are kinda hilarious/bad, but Im not sure how many have actual plots youd miss or anything meaningful really

Fate/Stay Night's removed a sex scene and replaced it with a scene where the disembodied spirit of the protagonist gets attacked by a giant CGI dragon

Nothing else in the plot changed

DRv3 > DR2 > DR1, except where cast is concerned. Then it's 3=1>2.

And if anyone is still asking, the puzzles in 3 continue in the trend of 2 where the trials are increasingly complex. They actually added intermissions to indicate midway points.
