The thing about being US prez is that youll always have blood in your hands regardless dem or rep. Maybe some more than others. One of the veeery few good things about Trump is not starting a war, but I remember the 59 Tomahawk missiles they sent to Syria in retaliation to "chemical strikes" in April 2017. That had around 100 casualties iirc.

Yeah. Like this is definitely an atrocious act, and it would be just as much of an atrocity if it didn't kill an American citizen. But it feels weird bringing it up because you know there's a subset of nutjobs who'll use this to say Obama was a callous, bloodthirsty war criminal, only to defer to Trump "making America great again" and "draining the swamp" and all that shit - despite Trump's actions in the past:

• Refusing to disavow white nationalist terrorists, instead telling them to "stand down and stand by", in a period of American history where white nationalist violence is on the rise and after they've killed multiple American citizens.
• Completely fucked up the response to a pandemic, covering his ass by saying "if only 100,000 Americans die by July I'll have done a good job" - more than 100k people died by then - and leading to the virus having a stranglehold on the country which has made America the #1 country in the world for COVID deaths, with over a quarter of the world's recorded COVID deaths.
• Pulling out of Syria, leaving their Kurdish allies to face the full military brunt of a country that is actively committing genocide against them.

Like it's undeniably vile that Obama ordered a drone strike that killed a US citizen, let alone the civilians who must have died the world over from drone strikes. But at this point, it feels like the people who would hold this up as the greatest American shame of the last 10 years would actively be holding this up in direct opposition to the idea that Trump's actions have endangered and killed a significant amount of American citizens and destabilized areas of the world through unnecessary military actions.

It's a bummer having to make that distinction, but in a world where white nationalist violence is dismissed by "but Antifa is worse!" - a patently untrue statement that's trotted out by the President of the United States in response to claims that white nationalists are killing and assaulting more people every year - it feels more and more like there's a cultural divide between the atrocities of different presidents and the violence committed under the rule of one president will be upheld as unanimously worse to supporters of another president who's committed an atrocity that's undeniably worse than the example they're providing.

I think he could have slowed COVID down so that less people would have died.

COVID was gonna hit hard either way. The difference is whether it would have killed 200,000 Americans in 7 months, in 12 months, in 24 months or at all.

If this pandemic was handled properly, you wouldn't have nearly a quarter of a million dead people due to COVID in just over half a year. Downplaying it, actively fighting the CDC over how serious it is and supporting anti-mask protestors by yelling them to "liberate" states over their mask laws at the height of the pandemic all played a part in the sheer amount of deaths that have occurred.

People would have died regardless, but the amount of people would be lower if it was handled with any sort of respect. I genuinely think that the US might have gotten out with under 200,000 deaths, if only for a single year, if this was handled properly. Trump's efforts to ignore it, to the point of him slowing down/stopping COVID testing around the country so the figure wouldn't rise as fast, is unquestionably a major reason why so many Americans are dead right now.

I hate Trump and I largely agree with most criticism of Obama on his actual policy. I think he was awful and a lot of things he did should be considered war crimes, not to mention domestic policies like immigrant deportation (not just Trump), and spying (remember Snowden?). The idea that you either have to like Trump or Obama is ridiculous. I can say Obama is better than Trump or I would rather Biden be elected than Trump, without actually thinking they are good people with good policies.
