For the swamp creatures at the Presidential Debate Commission to now rush to Joe Bidens defense by unilaterally canceling an in-person debate is pathetic, Bill Stepien, Trump campaign manager said in a statement. The safety of all involved can easily be achieved without canceling a chance for voters to see both candidates go head to head. Well pass on this sad excuse to bail out Joe Biden and do a rally instead.

Biden aides argued that Trumps pulling out could be a boon to their candidate. Given reactions to the chaotic first debate, they believe most voters, especially undecided voters, will see the president as avoiding a second debate out of his own interests, not because he dislikes the format.

Thank god, Biden's team is actually competent. I was afraid if Trump bailed on a debate that Biden would just oblige. I'm glad he fully intends to show up and speak for 90 min, whether Trump does or not.
Giving Biden a full "debate" to himself to steer the conversation to any topics he wishes is a huge blunder by Trump. And he plans to hold a freaking rally while still infected with the virus!

Part of me thinks this is a ploy and Trump "changes his mind" like 2 hours before the debate in the hopes that Biden hadn't prepared for an actual debate and it catches him off-guard.
But I think it's more likely that Trump's just a moron.

Let's just ignore their team refusing to show unless rules were changed. They were changed to further bias for the Dems, so there's no reason why Trump would get involved in that trap.

To be clear, because the topic title isn't, he didn't refuse to debate Biden, he refused to take part in a virtual debate, however, as he has coronavirus, Biden's team doesn't want an in person debate with him, even if Trump wants that.

The reason Trump gave was I'd be too easy for the debate to be manipulated if it was done online only.

Cant Biden just say hes making a 90 minute speech any day and have people tune in and Trump can do the same? Trump is changing the game. Hes not a good defensive player, only offensive.

So couldn't the "debate" be held with Biden going on every national network and just speding 1.5-2 hours talking his own policy?

I'm really not sure what the opposition is to a virtual debate. The vast, vast majority of people watching the debate will be doing so virtually anyway, so going virtual isn't going to change their experience at all. The only real difference is the handful of people that would watch it live will be disappointed, but they'll get over it.

The only aversion I could see to a virtual debate is he is old and doesn't understand how virtual stuff works. He might have been afraid they would mute him to let Biden speak too, since his entire debate strategy last time seemed to hinge on making it impossible for Biden to get a thought spoken completely. It's simply inexcusable to demand an in person debate OR to hold a rally. He really should be held criminally responsible if he holds a rally while sick.

Considering he wanted people to check Biden for an earpiece before the last debate, I guess he probably would be concerned about people feeding Biden answers during a Zoom conference. Not sure why the committee can't just accommodate an in-person debate. And, in general, a Zoom conference would basically kill any actual debating since it would eliminate things like cross-questioning which is the only time when you get seasoned politicians to break script when answering a question. In that absence, you wouldn't even have people call attention to the fact that a candidate has failed to answer the question.

Hopefully we'll at least see the scheduled third debate.

Is it not obvious that Trump doesn't want to do the original debate because he's not yet recovered enough from COVID? He doesn't want to show vulnerability.

He's lying to the public about his health. Just like how he lied about his spontaneous unscheduled trip to the hospital on the weekend (where doctors had to sign NDAs) being a routine visit.
