One of the most fearsome yakuza underworld groups in Japan has been told it cannot hand out sweets to trick-or-treating children at Halloween.

The local government of Hyogo Prefecture, in central Japan, on Monday unanimously approved a new provision to existing anti-gangster legislation that makes it illegal for members of the Yamaguchi-gumi to hand out treats at its headquarters in the city of Kobe on Halloween.

Despite their reputation as violent criminals, members of the gang have been enthusiastic participants in Kobes Halloween festivities for many years, with gangsters in costumes handing out sweets outside their offices.

Come on Japan, let your gangsters give out treats to kids :((

Other countries that arent as great as us are actually running low on covid poor schmucks

Looks like only 5,000 people have covid there right now to our 2.5 million. And they have about a third of our population in a space the size of California and they managed to social distance better lol.

I mean a few things:

  1. Japan on the whole gives about 20-30% of the fucks that the US does for Halloween in general. It's almost entirely a holiday for little kids. Even if high school kids get involved, it's almost always to support smaller kids.
  2. The real question isn't why Hyogo is banning the Yamiguchi-gumi from handing out treats; it's why only NOW they've decided to do so. You have to understand that the yakuza aren't remotely like the Crips or the Bloods or even the Itallian or Irish mafia. The yakuza have spent decades post-war working their way into the fabric of Japanese society to the point where some places consider them a "necessary evil", in that they keep the streets safe by tamping down on petty crimes so civilians don't have to worry going out at night. That also means getting involved with the community on some level, which can include construction projects, food drives, and getting involved in local events like Halloween.

It's just weird to me that you have practically a National crime syndicate, with a national headquarters, and legislation that specifically targets them. It's almost like they're a political party.

lol you dont have a clue.
As someone who lived in Japan, they had an incident where Yakuza members went into a club on the 1st floor and beat a person to death in there with baseball bats.
Afterwards they threatened all the establishments around the club with the bar I used to visit closing down and the owner fleeing the country.

People think the mafia is cool too. I guess it comes down to the fact that those organizations pretend to have some type of code of honor and usually do a better job of staying out of the limelight unlike street gangs

They have local branches in most places that are marked on Google maps (search for ). Honestly I have never had a bad experience with them so I can't really give much of an opinion outside of what I gather from the news.

I do not and I have not. Tell me about it.

I mean props to Shibuya for going all out, but the point I'm making is that Halloween doesn't have remotely the cultural penetration that it has in the US.

Which are claims literally made about the Italian mafia, and just as wrong. You shouldn't advocating criminality.
