I'm not buying a projector. Replacing bulbs and other nonsense. The next television I get will be a 4K OLED television with HDMI 2.2 ports. I won't have to worry about bulbs or light levels or any of that. It'll be 1,500.00 well spent.

Apparently the new hotness on projectors is laser projectors, which, I'm all about. God I'd love to work on that.

My projector is kinda ghetto, admittedly. It's an Anker prism II. Not great with a lot of light, it's like 150lm/300/lm on bright but I keep my bedroom dark unless I really need light. "Normal" is fine for clearing my YouTube subs, I'll knock it into "bright" for real movies or a netflix binge.

Anker makes outstanding power banks, I have a 6 yo astro e7 that has been an absolute beast for 6 years so picking up a projector from them at an absolute clearance steal during my furlough was a no-brainer. There's much better, more portable or powerful projectors for the price of a gaming laptop. I picked this up for the price of a retro handheld, and have zero regrets given my use case. I have a Chuwi Larkbox hooked up to it and I have an 80ish inch display hooked up to a modest win 10 PC the size of a cupcake. It's fine for video playback. It's fine for my retro gaming. It's probably not up to snuff for hardcore modern gaming. But it was hella cheap when I got it and does 90% of what I would ask of a display. If I need a better image, I have a chromebook and a hp laptop on my coffee table too. I have my phone. If I just want to lay down and turn a wall into my display, I'm covered.

I don't know, a projector for home use feels weird, it seems like you basically need to have a designated room for it to work properly. You need the right time of day, the right kind of room, a blank wall, all for a Totally Fine experience at best.

Why would you want an unreasonably sized TV in either direction?

keystone correction lets me point it haphazardly at a wall from whatever distance and square it off. we're not looking at random x,y integers for ratios, though its technically possible.

Yeah, I figured you weren't getting a weird ratio thing, it's pointed reasonably at the wall and unless someone bumps it, it'll stay reasonably pointed at the wall. I mean for making is so big it's unreasonable, and so small it's unreasonable. Nobody's looking for a 3-inch screen to watch The Expanse. So you're more or less looking to make it TV-sized, because that's what humans want.
I guess you don't have a big honking TV and TV stand, you just have pure wall, so that's good, but you're moving the stand to the other side of the room.

well right now, my "screen" is about 56", the projector sits securely on my coffee table, and I'm sitting about 6 or 7 feet away from it. that's pretty reasonable. The projector itself takes up about as much space as a decent hardcover book, and its way easier to move than a tv.

Not sure what to get during Black Friday. Not a ton is jumping out at me, and some of the stuff that was on the cheap last Black Friday that I'd hope would get a discount again didn't. Granted, I guess it's not the end of the world that I'm not seeing more, but... meh.

So far I'm thinking I'll probably get Trials of Mana (for $20) and Uncharted Lost Legacy (for $10). The Uncharted games I'll want to play eventually, so it really just comes down to either buying it now or waiting for it to be available for around that same price in a collection (which the Uncharted games have a history of doing). As for Trials, I'm not sure if I'll ever see it for $15 or less and would prefer it on a quasi-handheld than eventually getting it cheap via Steam or something.

And I'll mention that, on my way home, it was weird not seeing the usual lines and/or packed parking lots at retailers. I was getting back late, too. (CT currently has a curfew in effect.)

Can't say that I've ever been big into big tvs either. Granted, part of it is that I don't do a lot of social watching; when I have people over, the tv usually isn't going. That that was one thing that always bugged me about my brother, he'd use a tv as background noise. It was the worst of both worlds, since it was a distraction to the conversation and then the conversation was a distraction to the television.

The other thing about big tvs is that they never seem to look as good for whatever reason. It probably comes down to setting the thing up properly, but I've always been the kind of guy who likes things to work almost right out of the box.

Hit the wall on that BBuy sale since I think free shipping starts at $35 and right now there's only $30 worth of stuff I care about. idk, if I can't think of something soon, I might just do in-store pick-up since it's probably cheaper to drive over there and I'll probably see other stuff of interest that way.

Also there's a fucking bee simulator on the Switch. I can understand a game where you control a bee, but as a simulator? >_> Somehow those trucking and bus driving sims don't seem so crazy.

i have a noted track record of falling in love with TV series' that get an ugly, early axe. Off the top of my head...Dark Angel. Firefly. Dollhouse. Fringe. the V Remake. Flashforward. Quantico. the entire Netflix Marvelverse.

I finally remembered Funko shit, but apparently not soon enough to get a Pop! Bulbasaur for $6.50 which is about what I'd be willing to pay for a Pop! Bulbasaur. Now I'm kinda torn between doing one thing from Frozen (a Mystery Mini or the Water Nook) or a bunch of stuff (Earth Giant + the aforementioned). I keep circling the drink on that Water Nook. I've almost bought it so many times now.

Fucking blind-boxed shit is like crack for me at times, so no matter what I'll probably be getting that Mystery Mini. Wasn't that long ago that I thought those were such a ripoff, but then again everything else went up a ton in price so it started to feel less rip-off-y.

the best charger on the planet IMO is the long-discontinued Anker Astro e7. the damned thing is a tank. one of the dozen 10/10 outstanding products on my list of outstanding products.

a secondary favorite of mine is the Xtar PBS2. it can take a variety of crazy Vape/Flashlight batteries and charge them, but can also be used as a powerbank. its the only powerbank i know of that can hotswap cells in or out. its good for about 50% charge on a modern cellphone, but it can also charge or use 2x18650 cells on the fly.

the e7 is a 6x18650 in a hard case and was like $50 towards the end of its manufacture. that Xtar is like $20 and the cells it uses are like $10 a piece at most vape shops, or like $5 a piece on illumn.com.

I was also burned by Dark Angel, but iirc at least that lasted 2 seasons?

What really killed me was the year was 2010/2011. I absolutely fell in love with No Ordinary Family and the Good Guys, as well as eventually getting hooked on The Cape. I fell for a *lot* of one-season wonders right about then.

2013 also sucked. Family Tools (based on White Van Man which *also* didn't last long), Rake, and few other shows I started watching also didn't last a season.

In fact, I think there are more shows than I liked that didn't last over a season than shows that did (Brimstone, the Kolchak reboot, Night Visions, etc)... although there are also more short-lived shows in general.

Then you have all of that stuff that got canceled early. Reaper certainly being one example

I have a good event in the pipeline: Because my employer is still doing holiday bonuses for managers (despite the pandemic), and because this is my first year qualifying to receive 100% of said bonus, I will be able to get a new laptop. Been using this one since 2012, and it has needed a replacement since 2016, but I have managed to keep it alive due to lack of funds. Needless to say, I am extremely happy that I will be able to retire it.

Granted, the new machine is not going to be top-shelf (e.g. only 8 GB RAM, relatively small built-in SSD), but it should be able to run most of the games that I want to play, and I will be able to watch online video at a normal speed and resolution again. In addition, thanks to Cyber Monday sales at Amazon, I have been able to get all the accessories I want for it at a steal (e.g. external 250 GB SSD, external DVD drive, USB 3.0 hub, a 64 GB SD card, etc.).

Biggest task is going to be transferring Steam stuff (and making sure Steam works in the first place), but I have flash drives for that.

I got a 9 dollar copy of Boarderlands 3. That may be a deal however.

Finally, I hot a copy fo DragonBall Z: Kakarot for 16.00 bucks. It seems like a deal, but who knows.

It was. Gamestop buy 1 get 1 and I checked the receipt and got a good deal as the DBZ game was priced at 30, and the lady only charged me 15.99 plus tax.

As a joke I got Oreon "Let's Sing Country" to open up on Christmas as a joke gift. He won't be amused, but we all will.

Been playing New Super Mario Bros U Deluxe. It's probably the first really decent entry in the "New" series since the early levels manage to have some character to them whereas the other games they felt like throwaways.

The other benefit is that it combines both the original and the expansion apparently on the Wii U (which I didn't get because Wii U) and, perhaps best of all, it adds Toadette as a playable character with a Peachette transformation. Toadette is kinda whatever, I didn't really know anything about her before now (although I'd seen the name, which just feels like either a distaff counterpart of Toad or a love interest -- not sure which), but Peachette is neat. Peach was a playable character in SMB2 and she has the same cool floating effect when she jumps (which I guess is comparable to the squirrel suit for other characters, but it was kinda nostalgic).

And while I like Peachette's design, it kinda reminds me that Peach is almost never playable in any of these games (because she's generally the damsel). You don't even ever see a new game+ where she's playable and Mario is captured. Granted, I guess she had a standalone game at one point?

idk, the game seems much easier as Toadette, although that relative ease is kinda fun.

I've gone through a few laptops in just the past few years. I wish I was still using one from 2012, because that'd be a good lifespan.

I think back in 2007, I got a new desktop because the old one wasn't working right. I think it only lasted like 4-6 years. After that I got a HP Envy (from Staples, not during a major sale, so it was like $600 or $650) but eventually its chassis got damaged and then it kinda split entirely, leaving it immobile. (However, either before that or after it I got a cheap Toshiba Satellite or something from Staples for $200? I thought it'd make a decent personal laptop that I could bring with me to work, but it just never ran that great.)

After that, just 2-3 years ago, I got a Lenovo... something for like $330 from BBuy. However, its performance was never great (possibly the AMD cpu rather than an i5+) so I wound up getting a Dell something or other (because I missed a better Black Friday sale last year) which has been having some issues. So last year I got a Dell... something for over $300 which has an i5, a SSD (only like 256GB?), etc. I figured between the two laptops, I'd get the same functionality I used to get from just the HP Envy. (Then I also got chromebook that year, which was more useful than the kindle fire7.)

What I should probably do is just get a good CPU then stream everything to the laptops.
