After that, just 2-3 years ago, I got a Lenovo... something for like $330 from BBuy. However, its performance was never great (possibly the AMD cpu rather than an i5+) so I wound up getting a Dell something or other (because I missed a better Black Friday sale last year) which has been having some issues. So last year I got a Dell... something for over $300 which has an i5, a SSD (only like 256GB?), etc. I figured between the two laptops, I'd get the same functionality I used to get from just the HP Envy. (Then I also got chromebook that year, which was more useful than the kindle fire7.)

I was looking at a current version of the HP Envy, but I think I am going to get the Asus Vivobook instead. Virtually the same specs (AMD Ryzen 3 instead of Intel), but for almost $150 less. And the missus is looking at a Chromebook.

weird, i had a Toshiba Satellite laptop that ran like a tank for most of SBA's heydeys. only thing i ever had to do was open it up once a year to blow the dust out because it was running 24/7 for like 6 years, and i did have to replace the fan and keyboard somewhere around the 4 year mark. what finally did it in was battery death, but it was a good unit and served me well. since they don't make anything like they used to, i'm guessing anything these days in consumer electronics is a ticking time bomb looking for an excuse to fail within 2 years in the name of planned obsolescence.

I imagine the issue with mine was that it was just a lower-end model. It still underperformed beyond any excuse, but it was more of a back-up device. And while it performed worse later on, it never performed great in the first place. However, right now it takes an absurdly long time to load the fucking thing.

Granted, in a pinch, I'm sure it might still be better than nothing, but I have quite a few other options now. And I don't believe I have that much stuff I need on it.

So, needless to say, I didn't succeed in my NaNoWriMo challenge.

In the end, I was at a little over 22k words. Ultimately it was a push-yourself-to-get-as-much-done-as-possible test, which I actually very useful for maintaining motivation over a period of time even in the absence of using the website for progress-tracking (since, as mentioned, I never figured out how to set a new project). I'm not sure that I've ever written a largely continuous narrative of that length (there was one break in the story I glossed over, and then a few other breaks I returned to after writing past that). More so, I found myself enjoying the process a bit more as time went on, although part of that was probably just having a bit of structure (or even routine) because this long-ass furlough (driven by the reckless governance of Ned Lamont and his decision to largely shut down the state) removed a lot of that from my life.

Of course, despite being 22k words in, I feel like I've only covered about a quarter of what I wanted to incorporate into the novel. The NaNoWriMo site mentions that the Great Gatsby was about 50k words, so I wound up looking up other works which were around 75k or 80k words. I'm not sure whether I'm running long or even if that's a problem if I were, since things tend to get trimmed down during the editing process (or added on, in some cases).

I think I'll try to finish my first draft by the end of the month, then re-read and fix things through January, find some beta readers (probably offline) in February, and then start shopping it around in March while I begin to work on the sequel. While conditions will change whenever COVID calms the fuck down and I'm back to work, I think I'd still like to try to write a book or two per year and continually try to sell them until I have a large enough body of work to just self-publish a lot at once.

The big thing is once I've got a lot further along, there's a feeling of momentum. And while there are some gaps, I realize at some of that stuff is probably covered within my initial notes (such as character names).

Of course, the biggest challenge is keeping the momentum going, both in terms of maintaining a writing routine and then not getting distracted by the countless side projects I'll just randomly start writing (which has always been an issue)

The global sales are coming back for the PS5 and the Xbox Series X/S, and it's a big lead for Sony, even in America.

I have close friends that are die hard Xbots, and it's really confusing because their loyalty isn't rewarded with quality exclusives. My brother talks more about Gamepass than they do, and the games they play I can play on PS4.

Truthfully, I miss playing with them because there were late nights of playing Left 4 Dead 1 and 2 that I will cherish forever. I guess it's true that you can never ho back.

But to what extent is that just units produced? Given the current COVID situation, you could have both companies do a full sell-through but one company might have had more units to sell.

Unless you are doing epic fantasy (which is longer) or young adult (which is shorter), 80,000 to 100,000 words is about right for the average novel. Still, 22,000 in a month is a good showing, especially if you are not used to being in the writing habit. Well done.

Meanwhile, one more day until new computer time. Spent a fair chunk of yesterday clearing out all my Steam games to get ready for the switch.

Announcing....

Well, not really free as you need an HBOMAX subscription, but it's almost free, and that's almost good enough... Right? Right?

I still haven't seen the first one. However, I was at a Hot Topic the other day where they had the Wonder Woman 84 Mystery Minis in clearance... and the four packs that I bought contained a white-robed Diana, two unhgold-armor Wonder Woman (I should have suspected given the weight and grabbed another one for the second), and a Cheetah. I had really been going for the Cheetah, so that worked out. Although it was an amazing price for Mystery Minis (effectively $2 each), I'm not sure if I'll get any more from that same series if I see the deal again.

Oh, and that BBuy package arrived -- which was delivered as two shipments, begging the question why bother asking for a minimum for free shipping when they're just delivering separately anyway -- and the Frozen 2 Mystery Mini was just the common adult Anna. Not terribly exciting, but I guess it beats an Olaf. Come to think of it, other than the elementals and the ice crystal Elsa, I'm not sure there were any selections that were of great interest. I guess it's more just the appeal of blindboxed figures in general that made me select that as a free shipping add-on.

Of course, regarding relative value, the $6 MSRP has always felt a little high for stuff like Mystery Minis, especially since Pop!s often wind up getting discounted cheaper than that. The usual Pop! MSRP is about $9 (and retailers go as high as $12.50 at times, with some exclusives getting listed for a bit more than that) which, considering the size difference, always feels a little insane. I imagine a lot of that just comes down to all of the individual licensing fees, etc. I had resisted the Mystery Minis line for like the longest time and I kinda suspect that the fact that all basically all other collectibles have risen in price has helped to make it more palatable.

On an entirely separate note, I feel a moment of silence for the death of the Arecibo radio telescope is in order. Totally obsolete by modern standards, but so are the Voyager probes and the Hubble, and all of them put in thousands of man hours probing a universe that we've explored approximately zero percent of.

RIP Arecibo.

I'm kind of glad that the online community is ticked off at Nintendo. Granted it's just the online community over Smash, and shutting down fan projects, but it's something. Also, most of their fans don't care, but again... it's something. Nintendo doesn't give a **** either, and they're still making money hand over fist, but it's something.

I'm also not sure that I saw all of season 5 prior to watching it on NF, although I remembered this and that. I definitely hadn't seen any of season 6 prior to now because Yahoo.

This third Marvel Spider-Man film is clearly going to be a live action version of "Into the Spider-Verse" without Miles, as all 3 Spider-Men are coming back, along with original Mary Jane Kirsten Dunst and just announced Alfred Molina as Doc Ock.

My Spider-Man and Geek and Nerd happiness are at an all time high. This is good news because I was scared we would never see any of those characters from the other film franchises and universes again, but it seems to be happening.

The demise of the DC Universe app (yesterday) has caused me to develop a need to get into all the DC TV shows, especially those that used to be exclusive to the app (... until HBO Max gobbled it up, and that is the one app that is inaccessible from a Roku). As it happens, Amazon has the DVD sets for those for about $10 U.S. each, so it was easy to get those together. (Also got a good deal on the Blu-Ray version of the underrated Legion of Super-Heroes cartoon.)

Looking at the Constantine TV show next. Plus Legends of Tomorrow, but I can watch that on Netflix. Cannot get hyped for either Arrow or Flash (or Supergirl or Batwoman), though.

DC Universe was always a stupid idea. There was never enough content for a standalone streaming service.

And, honestly, HBO getting Harley Quinn could be a good thing, if we get longer seasons. And if it's on HBO, I won't be stuck going through YT for it.

I'm talking about content that exists now, not hypothetical future content that would also need to be funded.

Even if DC had every single DC property ever made on its streaming service -- which might not be possible anyway due to licensing agreements -- it wouldn't be an amazing amount compared to pretty much every other streaming platform out there... and even those platforms are lacking at times.

We've had a *lot* of live-action Superman shows at this point >_> Smallville, Lois & Clark, Adventures of Superman, and now some new one as well. (Before you get excited about the new series, Elizabeth Tulloch -- Juliette from Grimm -- is playing Lois so set your expectations very, very low.)

Batman really hasn't, although Gotham at least *partly* covered that area. (Otherwise I'm not sure we've seen one since Adam West played Batman.... although the reason seems pretty obvious, considering how many Batman cartoons they run and a live-action series would cannibalize that younger viewership.)

At least Durance has some acting ability. Even though Grimm had universally poor acting, Tulloch set herself apart with her terrible performances.

Well, up until episode 9, I was inclined to think that season 32 was the worst season (as of now, anyway) of the Simpsons... which it still might be, but at least "Sorry, Not Sorry" was actually kinda funny. Meanwhile the only good part of the episode before it -- "The Road to Cincinnati" -- was the ending where the Simpsons are discussing what they did that week.

Granted, it did kinda didn't address the larger issue of Miss Hoover being a shitty teacher, other than Homer's remark at the end

Apparently the Loki trailer dropped a few days ago:

When it started, I had my hopes up because it seemed to pick up right after EG and I was getting more of an adventure vibe that looked more like a movie than a show... then it kept going and my feelings grew increasingly mixed. It certainly looks more like a show at this point; I'm still interested, although not as hyped.

I'm trying to keep posting, but I'm really sick.

Yes, I have Covid 19. My whole family does, which means I got it from one of them. It seems to be a mild strain as I can still breathe and only have mild to moderate symptoms. My fever spiked to 102 last night, but I took copious amounts of medication and I feel better finally.

Anyway, in gaming news Cyberpunk is running like garbage on anything except space age super computers, and even then it's still got bugs. Sony is giving PS4 gamers refunds on the purchase and advising to wait for a patched and optimized Next gen version.

No ****!
