I work in IT BTW. Yesterday a floor manager from our Customers Relations department requested a standing desk for one of his employees. I denied it. I told him his user has no need for it and I directly and bluntly told them we're not here to make their desks look cool. They got super pissed about it and took it to HR.

HR asked me why we couldn't buy it. I told them we're trying to be cost effective. Giving them a standing desks will NOT make the user more productive or more efficient at all. He has no health issue where he would require this. Not only all that but that department has been on record to dumb useless shit such as new monitors, desk chairs, wireless keyboards and mouse. It's pretty obvious they just want to bling up their desks, so I stood my ground and said no. If they want a yes then they'd have to go to my boss. He'll also say no.

If you want you desk to look all high tech then you need to buy your own shit otherwise use what the company gives you.

That needs to come from HR. It didn't. Usual protocol is if user has some sort of medical condition and needs certain things to help, they'll need something from the doctors confirming it then it'll go to HR to approve then the request will come to us.

At my company, an ergonomic analysis is performed by our safety engineer to determine whether or not one might get such an accommodation. I am quite a bit taller and was a bit slumped over to see my computer screen. HR actually gave me some stuff and demanded I get an adjustable desk. Of course, it's well known that I lay the golden eggs and they usually try to keep me happy.

The employee could talk to literally any medical professional on Earth and they'll tell them "yeah, sitting for 8hrs per day is bad for you, and a standing desk would be better for your health."

Plus, you can buy standing desks for like $150US, is that really going to break the budget? I worked at a call center (a business that is entirely focused on being as cheap as possible) and every desk could toggle between standing and sitting. This was over a decade ago, and yet companies are still out there fighting it.

Because they want us to assemble it, mount monitors to it, wrap the cables neatly and put everything together correctly.

If we don't order it for them they we don't have to put it together. It won't go under IT inventory.

Studies show they have little effect unless you have health problems that require it. What is better for employee health is for them to get up and take a short walk every hour or so.

The minimum cost for such an accommodation is about $450 but was around $2000 for the solution I was offered as it had electronic adjustment.

The one they gave me at work was about $150, it had pneumatic pistons so you did not have to press hard to raise/lower it, so a range of physical abilities could still manage it.

Not to say that you shouldn't buy more expensive options if you like them more, but to do the bare minimum for it's employees, the company wouldn't have to spend much. Hell, they cost quite a bit less than a halfway decent office chair.

Yeah IT shouldn't be deciding who needs standing desks nor installing them. Just because monitors sit on top doesn't make it IT.

I'm sure the engineer/worker requesting the desk makes comparable pay. It's a matter of budget and which department (not individual) should pony up the money for one.

"pay for it from your own pocket" is a stupider take than OP's, regardless of his income.
