Yes, except in reality I'm just as awful as them and know nothing about computers but possess the superpower of, 'having the ability to google something and click a few links', which no one in my family seems to have.

If that doesn't work I just go with, "yeah there's nothing I can do about it". Works every time.

"good with computers" at home includes knowing how to post a comment on facebook, so I'm a freakin' wizard, harry (an example from literally yesterday)

for real my dad needs help on ever single action on the computer and ffs he for some reason went back to school so he has to call me over 10 times a day for the elearning (not to mention everything regarding admission itself, schedules...) and i honestly have to teach him the same stuff over and over again because nothing ever sticks

he's so afraid to try anything he doesn't know, for instance one time he called me over and asked "what does this button do?" on the etextbook questions........ I go over and say "I don't know, press it and you'll find out", to which he finally sees it brings him to the answers for the questions

My mom has a sticky note next to her computer that I made her when I was 15, it says "ctrl+c ctrl+v"

Its been 14 years and she still looks at it when copying and pasting

Not really, my mom and I are probably about equal, I probably know more about hardware since I've built one and she hasn't but she works with computers all day and knows a lot, so either of us could be called upon to fix my grandparents' computer

Among my friends fuck no

My parents would tell everyone I was good at computers because I knew how to turn one on and they didn't.

Because of this, aunts and uncles would ask for me to build a website for them or other ridiculous things I'm not qualified to do.

At my job, one of the higher ups often sends electricians to deal with any computer problems. Because computers use electricity I guess.

Yeah, but I also went to school for IT and work in desktop support.

That being said, I refuse to work on anything at home unless people pay me so I usually don't get bothered.

Among family, my brother has that position, although I'm the backup if he's not around.

At work, yes.

of course, but it's much worse than just for family and friends

i'm also that person for the 30 person Finance team at my company. We have a fully staffed IT department, but their focus is supporting our retail locations, so our petty issues that lock us out of working are not a priority for them. It can take hours or days for them to get to you. In the meantime, the finance person can't do their job or at least part of their job until they get addressed. And then IT might not even really believe you have an issue! So why wait for them when they could ask Cly and get back to work in 5 minutes, or if I can't figure it out or make the fix myself I'll tell them exactly what to tell IT so they can solve the problem quickly when they do get to it

it's not even an aging boomer problem.... these people are primarily our age group or even younger

this is especially funny because my best friend is a sysadmin, and talking to him about tech always makes it blatantly clear i dont know anything about computers

Mine have gotten better since, but my dad was especially stubborn in the early-mid 2000s about learning how to use one. He uses a tablet all the time now.

My parents are mostly okay with computer stuff, especially my mom. My dad is fine using the stuff he normally uses (Word, email, internet browsing) but doesn't like trying anything new without either me or my brother around to show him how it works.

My partner is terrible with smart phones. Like anytime he tries to do something, it's like his mind goes blank and he's momentarily incapable of thinking or remembering, and he just kinda pokes and swipes at random. And then gets mad at the phone when it doesn't work.
