I had my Switch in a fabric carrying case for a long time. Took it out recently to play some games and it wont charge at all. Is this a common issue? I turned a DS on the other day that was found in a box from sometime in 2012 (unsure how much older the DS is) and it fired right up. So I dont know whats happening with my Switch.

sometimes if a switch sits for a long time and its battery is drained, it needs to sit and charge for an hour or more before it will even turn on.

The only way this sounds like it could actually damage the switch is if it got water damage while in the case which is unlikely. The other possibility is excessive heat which could damage it even if it was turned off. Excessive dust could be another factor but again unless the case was dusty as heck this sounds very tough.

The only way to know for sure is contact Nintendo and send it in for repairs or something like that. They would be able to identify the problem, and the repair might be covered under warranty depending.

Yeah if you are rough with the charging port you can damage it, my little brothers used to break phones often because they would be rough unplugging or plugging them in. Same thing can happen to cords that charge it they can get frayed or damaged with use depending.

Anyways I had to get my PS3 repaired back in like 2010, I sent it to Sony and it ended up being far cheaper than buying a used one or a new one even thought it was past the warranty.

The ports usually get loose from wear. Its already getting loose and I barely use it. Same thing happened with my Sony controller and the USB port on the console. Only ports that havent loosened are kn my Xbox One controller charging port and all the ports on the console.

Try cleaning the charging port out with a wooden toothpick (wooden because it doesn't conduct electricity). Even if it looks clean you would be surprised how much stuff gets stuck in there. Just be gentle so that the pick doesn't break off in the port, because then you have a whole new problem to deal with.

Its been in a case for an extended time. I dont think that was the issue. I do try to pick all that grime from whatever slot I can find in my controllers once every few months. I use toothpicks over pins to avoid scratching.

It did turn back on finally, but its been on and off the charger for lengthy periods over the last couple days. I guess it decided to turn itself back on only after I chose to make this post, and before I tried to get a hold of Nintendo.

then there's absolutely something stuck inside the port. get a needle, and scrape around inside there. guarantee it's not loose anymore.

type-c ports don't get loose until after an obscene amount of abuse and insertions. like we're talking unless you try and break it, it wont get loose for the systems entire lifetime. if it feels loose, there's debris in the port.

It is annoying that there is no charging light. I think I had to charge mine for quite a long time before it finally turned on. Really thought it was broken. Probably took like 10+ hours of charging.

li-ion batteries are designed to deactivate if they run too low on charge, because there are safety mechanisms in the battery that rely on having a charge. once parts of the battery deactivate, they never reactivate. so, when you let the charge get too low, they will permanently lose chunks of charge depending how low you let it get.

can't be sure that's what's going on though. can also be a cable problem, etc. (though I think the switch has a charge stand or something? is the charge stand plugged in and the cable ok? my family has a switch but I don't so I don't know a ton about it specifically.)

You can charge a Switch either like a normal thing like a modern phone or with the stand, both of them work. If it only charged with the stand that would be a real pain in the ass to bring with you in case you need to charge it. The stands main function is to let you use the Switch with a TV and the charging is just a nice bonus.

I always and I mean always hold the power button in until the power options screen comes up, and then shut the Lite down. The battery doesn't have the best lifespan as it is and I don't want to screw it up haha.

Sorry. This vs. that. Thought you were talking about drift.

Sounds like eventually, if these batteries are a custom size or they stop making the size, the console will be plug-in only.

Isn't replacing the battery a huge pain in the ass? I believe it's glued onto the board.

I believe someone else said its relatively simple. Being glued to the board would be a pretty terrible decision by Nintendo on the engineering-side.

They wouldn't be the first to glue a battery onto the board, Apple phones have the battery glued in to make replacing it very very hard.
