When I first learned about the fact that loads of those foods were native to the Americas back in school, I remember being floored that Italy didn't have pasta sauce until relatively recently. I think in my head as a 10ish year-old I had just assumed that the Romans ate pasta.

They had peppercorn.

"Peppers" as we know them today are all descended from various types from South America. The Spanish and Portuguese spread them throughout Asia.
