In some cases, I can see language barriers effectively adding an additional cost due to how much they can slow down service, in which case a surcharge might be justifiable, but dude runs a sharpening shop. I doubt he's ever got enough customers for a couple minutes' delay to result in significant lost business, nor is he likely to encounter particularly complex customer interactions that would be significantly complicated by a poor grasp of English. It doesn't exactly take much linguistic prowess to say "please sharpen this."

1) Duckbear already did this topic. I knew Duckbear. Duckbear was a friend of mine. And you, sir, are no Duckbear.

https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/boards/3-poll-of-the-day/78967690

2) Once again, how is this a "MAGA Alert"? It feels like you're still just trying to copy a clickbait gimmick like Duckbear's and failing miserably. Once again, I knew Duckbear. Duckbear was a friend of mine. And you, sir, are no Duckbear.

3) I broadly support shopowners' right to charge what they want -- provided that they haven't made contracts with distributors/manufacturers to charge certain prices -- and, generally speaking, if one business owner isn't working out for customers, they can go to another business. Doubly so since something like a knife store is pretty fringe.

To sum it all up, I knew Duckbear. Duckbear was a friend of mine. And you, sir, are no Duckbear.

Apparently he made the sign because he got pissed off after a long interaction with a customer he couldn't understand because they insisted in only speaking Spanish and, after posting the sign, pretty quickly took it down when people complained. Right now it's just people spiking the ball. They already got what they wanted, most of the people who complained loudest would never shop there anyway, and it's unlikely he would have actually charged anybody extra in the first place, but they want to go to great pains to harm the guy because he posted the sign in the first place, presumably to send a message to the next person who might consider doing something similar.

I'm no expert, but I'm pretty sure being a private business doesn't allow you to discriminate in this kind of fashion. I would imagine there are laws protecting people from being charged extra due to that type of characteristic. And if there isn't, somehow, there fucking should be, alright?

The suit would be thrown out if his business, or its advertisements, does not cross state lines. He can run his private business how he wants, and people don't have to partake in said business.

This isn't like the couple with the cakes, who gave the gay couple's information to other people to harass them with, chase them out of town when they had wanted to marry so they could adopt a dying/late friend's daughter, and, you know, the cherry on top was that we as the public only got to hear or read about the gay couple being denied business and the lawsuit that came of it. No, this private store's case does not sound quite like that.

Now if said store owner was giving private information, belonging to non-English speaking customers, to other parties, then we'd have a serious problem. Until then, yeah, people can choose to go elsewhere.

If I could remember which case it was, I'd link it. However, there was one in which discrimination was the issue, but the business in question alleged to be private. The business only lost this case because of a brochure in a hotel in another state. Since their business was advertised across state lines, it became a national issue, and the discrimination was found illegal. I'd love it if I remembered where to find this as an example of how our country, and its states and territories, handle discrimination.

That's bullshit. I work in customer service, and I can't imagine not helping someone for any reason other than them being a super rude jerk. If someone can't speak English, I'll use Google translate or something. People are people, and we should treat them with respect and decency.

And I probably would too, but I certainly shouldn't HAVE to do that and if I own the store I should be able to kick people out or charge whatever I want (assuming it is clear before rendering services) at the risk of my business getting less customers. If my business does just fine with a sign out front saying something like "no tourists" then why should I have to cater to tourists as an example.

This.

That said, if it's a pain in the ass for him to deal with people that can't read or speak the primary language of the country, then he might as well call it a convenience fee.

Just advertising it on his front door makes him look an asshole trying to take a political stance, though. And that's likely all it is.
