No but I support a system with deadlines that are known months in advance and everyone has all the information they need to navigate the process correctly.

Mail-In ballots have to go out early enough that they both have enough time to reach the voters and have enough time to be returned and counted. That means changes to the ballot need to be finalized well ahead of time. That's not disenfranchising anyone that's just a logical necessity.

How you leap from that to "only the incumbent will be listed" is beyond me.

Also, the Wisconsin law in question doesn't talk about seconds. It just says the paperwork in question must be filed "not later than 5 p.m." The fact that it uses the terminology "not later than" implies that it is possible for a filing to be made at exactly 5 p.m., which means we are not constructing time as an infinitely granular, continuous, dimension but rather as something measurable in discrete intervals. So then the question is how precise our measure is, and I think the plain English understanding of "not later than 5 p.m." would include stuff filed while a digital clock read 5:00 and not stuff filed after it read 5:01.

Beyond that, you also have serious problems with the question of whose clock we are using. Clocks can be off by 14 seconds. It's scarcely believable that we would be okay with an election being decided like this.

In that case, your name should be added to the election day ballots (if we allow the mail-in ballots - this is sounding like a good argument for not accepting those). But this is also not a very relevant argument. Kanye's filing was made the very minute of the deadline. It had zero impact on printing ballots.

There was this really insightful analysis of Trump's fanbase by someone who lives in a deeply red area that I wish I could find. The general gist was:

-Lots of Trump supporters think fundamentally differently than non-supporters on matters of hatred and weakness

-Specifically, diehard Trump supporters are terrified of coming across as weak, and define 'strength' as 'the hatred of weakness'

-'Weakness' can mean many things but often refers to any lifestyle they don't approve of (other races, LGBTQ, ect.) as it means their personal worldview isn't the one, true, best worldview

-Another 'Weakness': an admittance of the fact that you can't do everything on your own (which often translates into a hatred of the government, except when Trump is involved because they consider him an outsider to the government)

-They love Trump because he's someone who NEVER admits to being wrong, or that he was anything but entirely self-sufficient, and is in direct opposition to the lifestyles they despise, which in their eyes make Trump 'strong' and an ideal to live up to

-tl;dr - Trump supporters are deeply fearful people and hatred is a drug that makes them feel strong again. It's why most of them only care about triggering libs, even at the expense of their own well-being

I think it got lost because so many people have Corrik ignored and then started shitposting about Kanye West, but I do think it is pretty bullshit that Democrats on the election commission voted to keep the Green Party candidate off the ballot because they switched addresses while collecting signatures. The obstructionism in the right fucking up the mail-ins is awful too but it could have been avoided had they just...allowed it in the first place.

I've always felt I had a solid grasp on the ToS and while there have been posters in this topic who I felt often crossed the line into what was definitely moddable posts (Seph would often go there back when he was around) I don't really think any of our current regulars really violate it much at all, even when the discussions get pretty emotionally charged.

I think you probably get by if you just called my post a "simple way of thinking" or even "dumb way of thinking" but who knows anymore, like I said, I didn't feel it broke the ToS in the first place. I certainly didn't feel you broke the ToS in our discussion at any rate. =/

I mean, sure, but as the "insulted party" here I don't really think he ever crossed the line with me. I've disagreed with Corrik over the unfairnesses of some of his other moderations when he's brought them up and explained why I think the mod team took action in specific cases and the moderation was fair or justifiable but I've also disagreed with some of those moderations as well. This is the latter case.

The only case I can see the mod team making on #242 is thinking that in Corrik's use of "simpleton" as an adjective he was trying to get away with a ToS-friendly way of using the r-word as an insult. I'll admit I kind of quirked an eyebrow at #242 when I first read it but only because I felt it was an odd turn of phrase - I'd never seen it used as an adjective like that before. Like IDK, maybe that's the case for a really soft Notify Without Delete but... idk. Like I said, I think he definitely gets away with it if he just attacks my argument as "dumb." The mod team generally lets soft insults like dumb fly on users so I have to imagine it'd be fine to call my argument (not even me!) "dumb."

I mean this is all secondary to whether I or anyone else thinks my argument was dumb I'm just saying I think it's within the bounds of the ToS to insult an argument as long as you don't leverage particularly charged words in doing so.

i definitely think there seems to have been some weird hardcore ramp-up of the modding in the past two weeks or so. not too long ago, i made like ten posts in a row insulting corrik (calling him a "piece of shit" and the like) and only a few of them got modded without karma loss.

recently, i got warned for the first time in years. after that, i thought "fine, i'll tone it down a little for now" and called corrik an "ass," which i thought was a pretty tame insult (and an insult i've seen go unmodded plenty of times here over the years and used by a lead mod, as i've said before). and i still got modded. what the hell?

(and yeah, the shit sephy got away with on a regular basis was ridiculous.)
