"It's just a horse" - animals are more than just things, though, they become valuable parts of our families and I don't know if she has kids to take care of or not but to her the horse could be her child.

That is a really high vet fee though, I didn't know horse medicine was so expensive.

Sure sure but look people on this site correctly point out you need to think about the cost when it comes to pets all the time. If someone posted a $50,000 GoFundMe for their dog on ce, you'd dunk on them. It's happened at far smaller amounts

Its an interesting point about American culture to me that owning a horse is a symbol of wealth. I know a couple of people who work in shops who own horses. Scotland is a bit different i guess.

On one hand, there's a lot of suffering out there and this certainly isn't the most important thing right now.

On the other hand, if I lost 5 of my 6 horses I'd absolutely be doing everything I could to help the last one. My question is, if they were able to maintain 6 horses how can they not afford to take care of one now? I know that's a lot of money but I imagine it's pretty expensive to care for 6 horses, too.

I agree they're pretty ridiculous, but if you can fund an animal as part of your near minimum wage paycheck I'd hardly call it a status symbol. I mean that puts it on about the same tier as PC gamers tbh.

Probably different in America though, as I've seen this rich horse people meme a lot.

On a monthly basis, having a horse is like having another car payment. Most people could technically afford that, but most people in America need that money for other things

honestly...I grew up teaching riding, and I think one of the hardest things to do is separate my own selfish wants (keeping the animal who I emotionally bonded with in my life) from theirs (to not be in pain)

when you're talking about the vet costs of treating third degree burns over a large portion of their body, euthanasia is almost certainly the right choice.

not for cost, because they don't understand why they are in agony, only that it is unending

clearly i am not perfect at this because i let my partner insist on spinal surgery for our little dog when he was in agony from an extruded spinal disc. the poor dog proceeded to develop addison's disease as a result of the steroid treatments for that.

it isn't fair to them, they just want to not hurt

It's easy to imagine someone who is income poor but owns animals. I live in Arkansas, there are plenty of family farms.

But many of those animals are insured because they actually do work. A herd of 6 is pretty sizable for a small farm, and would likely be a breeding operation of some kind.

Won't pretend to understand how reservations are, though maybe I shouldn't assume that's where your friend lives.

This person lives in the SF suburbs not out living off the land in Humboldt county

Yeah I suppose. Another thing I guess is that here you can easily live with no outgoings except for rent and bills. No car, no healthcare, no pension, etc. So perhaps some people just like to live that way.

And to answer your other question yes - 6 horses would be wealthy for sure.

I've been there too with an elderly dog where it was just one thing after the other in regards to his health. Their quality of life is the most important thing, but the point at which you have to make the call is never clear and definitely never easy.

Horses are cited as a big cause of divorce. They're so expensive to take care of, and horse people get so obsessed that they can't just stop having horses.

That said, I can't blame the owner for trying to save her horse. If I had to pay $50,000 to save my dog, I'd put up a GoFundMe in the middle of a fire too.
