when you're talking about the vet costs of treating third degree burns over a large portion of their body, euthanasia is almost certainly the right choice.

not for cost, because they don't understand why they are in agony, only that it is unending

clearly i am not perfect at this because i let my partner insist on spinal surgery for our little dog when he was in agony from an extruded spinal disc. the poor dog proceeded to develop addison's disease as a result of the steroid treatments for that.

it isn't fair to them, they just want to not hurt

I've been there too with an elderly dog where it was just one thing after the other in regards to his health. Their quality of life is the most important thing, but the point at which you have to make the call is never clear and definitely never easy.
