I put some of the more memorable performances for this. Couldnt find who did stay away from the summoner but yeah

I dunno how it isnt Schultz. Dude did great voices for three distinct sounding characters. But theres some decent gems here.

As far as main characters go, it's Auron. He had the benefit of a high collar that covered his mouth most of the time he spoke, so his VA didn't have to match lip flap as much.

Overall, it's probably Dwight Schultz.

Tidus for sure due to nailing the difficult characterization. Everyone was pretty damn good across the board though, except Yuna sometimes.

John Dimaggio for double voicing Wakka and Kimahri- that's some incredible range! Followed closely by JAT for his powerful performance.

Yeah I feel like people exaggerate the laugther scene and I still hear live and let live a ton but honestly Tidus was pretty good in X, at least I felt emotion with his character.

Auron is the best but voted Tidus because it's easy to be the best when the script's already setting you up to be the best... though now I kind of regret not voting for John Dimaggio, yeah.

Voted James Arnold Taylor, his performance is super underrated and it would've been really easy to mess up Tidus given his complex characterisation and all the lip syncing. He nails the big emotional moments too, it's usually a pretty thankless role to play the lead in this kind of game, especially when they aren't Cool Badass Stoic Guy. And the laughing scene is legitimately great, I don't understand how people still act like the forced laughter was unintentional!

There are a lot of good ones though despite the game not having a great reputation for its VA.

J.A. Taylor is fantastic as Tidus. Lulu deserves a mention here despite not being listed on the poll.

I just feel like Auron's got very easy dialogue to do well if you find the guy with the right voice.

Like yeah he sounds badass but that's pretty much all he needs to do. There's stoic badass somber badass and angry badass.

Tidus has a lot more things he needs to convey so I've always been worlds more impressed with him than Auron. Auron may not even be top 5 VA in the game to me.

That said hes given probably the best line of dialogue in the game which probably helps him out a ton for this

just because the degree of difficulty isn't perceived to be as high doesn't mean he didn't knock it out of the park because you can find examples of his archetype who have crappy VAs

See the thing is I don't actually agree with this which is probably why we dont see eye to eye here.

There are many that aren't as good at it as Auron yes but actually bad? It's tough to think of any. Find any random bad anime dub and the badass is gonna be the best VA by far.

I kinda agree with both sides here. Auron is one of my fav characters but there's not half as much range needed for his role as for Tidus or Yuna (though she doesn't always get there). He does well in the moments where he's given something different to do though, the scenes immediately before and after Yunalesca show some emotional range and the flashbacks of his younger self show real talent in him legit sounding like a younger version of the same person. I don't think it's close to how much stuff JAT successfully accomplishes through the game though.

Also seconding the shout-out to Lulu's VA, and Schultz is indeed great. Yunalesca deserves a mention too imo.

the main character usually has the toughest job in any game so they'd win that by default

JAT sometimes nails Tidus and sometimes has moments where he sounds off. Overall he does a great job but I don't think he's 100% consistent.

Auron's pre-Yunalesca lines are probably the best-delivered in the game.

It's less deducting points from Auron and more giving points to Tidus for being great across a wider range of material that I think is harder to pull off, they're both great. And the moments where Tidus seems off (or any of the chars) I put down to poor clipping of lines more than poor performance. I think Tidus at Home is as strong as anything Auron has.

If you vote Auron for being the most memorable then you really should vote Wakka. DiMaggio and Tara Strong are really the best voice actors of the bunch in general.

I'd argue JAT has the most range of any of the voice actors if you want to judge them by that, but overall it's probably one of those 3.

Well it's less I'm giving JAT more credit because his range of lines is more difficult and more cause he nails what he's given and frankly feels more irreplaceable than Auron due to the difficulty of what he has. I could probably dig through and find dozens of VAs who I'd trust to deliver Auron's script pretty darn well -- not so with Tidus.

Maybe that's "unfair" but whatever Auron is winning the poll anyway so.

I voted Dwight Schultz because Maechen is one of my favorite characters because of the way his VA delivers the exposition.

Yeah making Maechen's lore dumps actually entertaining instead of wishing they were shoved away in a codex was great, top work from Schultz. One of the few characters who is improved by X-2 too imo.

Most dub stoic badasses have this very inauthentic DEEP VOICE that sounds cartoony in a way that Auron doesn't, who legitimately sounds like a real life grizzled man. So yeah I agree it's one of the easiest archetypes to nail, but somehow I never heard it quite like Auron before. Could be that the character himself is just better than most in those shoes.

Auron is one my favorite examples of the 'badass guy in the group' archetype. His voice rises above a lot of the other examples.

Tidus has a wider range and and probably has a more difficult job, but I also think his performance can be uneven. Chalk that up to to Square's dumb lip syncing policy if you want, but the end result is the end result.

Came into the topic not really knowing who I'd vote for, then I saw the options and easily could've chosen 7 of the 10 options. I never realized how good the VA work in FFX was across the board until now. Ended up voting Tara Strong, cuz I figured JAT and DiMaggio would be in the lead (oops Auron), but I gave a thought to everyone but Kenny and Demita.

Its odd because I really liked Rin and how hes presented in the game but the game itself just has so many good voice actors its hard to compete, maybe I should have swapped him with Lulu I dont know
