North Korean dictator Kim Jong Un has ordered pet dogs to be confiscated in the countrys capital, saying the pooches represent Western decadence but their owners fear Fido is really headed for someones dinner table.

Kim issued the directive in July to round up the pets, claiming they were part of a tainted trend by bourgeouis ideology, a source told the English edition of Chosun Ilbo, a South Korean newspaper.

Ordinary people raise pigs and livestock on their porches, but high-ranking officials and the wealthy own pet dogs, which stoked some resentment among the lower classes, the source said...

what's weird is that I have been arguing against eating pets for safety reasons (many domesticated non-farm animals are legitimately poisonous, especially fish and such)...

...and I'm getting called a wealthy 1st worlder who wouldn't sacrifice their pet if the government demanded it...

I like how the story presents it like the answer is "the zoo"....

North Koreans upset about dictator Kim Jong Un ordering pet dogs to be confiscated in the capital can still see some of the pooches in zoos.

....when, for the fate of most of these dogs, the real (and obvious) answer is buried there in the article:

Some of the confiscated dogs head off to the Korea Central Zoo in Pyongyang and other animal sanctuaries and dinner tables, the paper said.
Dog meat is a popular food in the country, and a recent food shortage has made it an all the more viable eating option.

Good news they will be getting the parts pack in a 9 piece bucket though some assemble will be required

Nah if the government wants my pets, fuck the government.

That being said, aren't a lot of the people in N Korea basically terrified of the government and raised to believe the leader like knows everything or something? Or is that just Western propaganda?

Thats not hyperbole. They deified themselves at the sametime making estern coutries with an especially murder boner for the us to be the evil masses coming to eat there food and children. Pulling miracles os spending wealth to gain extra (cheap) grains and claim the farmers had a booming crops thanks to kim telling the farmers what to plant. Or after the money ran out showing big macs with the headlines what the us did with their foreign aid.
