They are designed to punish the misfortunate.
Let's be real, they aren't deterring people from not paying. Those people won't pay the late fee either.

For what?

Why exactly should rentals not punish you for not returning an item after the period you paid for is passed? That is technically theft.

Late fee at rentals and rewind fees actually make sense. But they shouldn't call it late fee but extra rental and charge same price. Labor for rewind should be actual.

If a person had loved one die and paid at&t bill one day late, charginh them $10 is just greed.

It's called responsibility. If you're not responsible enough to fulfill the terms of the agreement that you agreed to, then you shouldn't have engaged in the first place.

Gotta pay interest if you are choosing to be irresponsible.

Companies are irresponsible all the time.
If my internet cuts out due to at&t being irresponsible, where is my fee?

My issue with late fees is that it is just double charging you.

Not paying on time already has the repercussion of more interest. Why add a fee on top of it?

Though TC seems to be talking about recurring utility bills? Not loans?

Only customers are expected such responsibilities.
If giant corp is late, they will refuse to pay a fee.

With an internet bill, you didn't go over anytime. Even if they didn't start your next bill cycle somehow, they would just shut it off.

Btw claiming late fees only effect the irresponsible shows you bought into the hyper-capitalism worship train propaganda. Things happen to people all the time.

And psuedo monopolies mean the market won't correct the greed of these companies as they have no real competition.

If you're going to be an asshole, then you have to pay a fee. If you're having money troubles, then you can be a responsible person and actually contact anyone you owe money to see about what options they might have for deferment.

When I worked there, I had a woman scream at me that what we were doing was against the constitution. That was in response to me asking for a credit card while opening a new account for her.

Since you guys like late fees so much, colleges should start charging students fees for showing up late to class.

Same at work. Show up a minute late and they take 5% out of your next paycheck.

Be responsible.

Those are pretty bad examples. If you work less, you get paid less. If you're late, you face potential repercussions. If you don't show up to class, you aren't getting the service you paid for, so you're the one losing out.

I read an article that late fees at libraries actually resulted in the books simply never being returned, and they lost a customer because that person wasn't allowed to check out books anymore.

Customer? Library is free. That is why they likely never returned the book.

you work less, you get paid less.

Only if you are hourly. Most corporate work you get paid the same even if you call your boss and say you will be late for a reason. If your boss is a good boss, they won't even care. As long as you do your work, it is meaningless.

When I worked there, the cutoff time was noon on the due date, but you could actually return stuff up until 2pm before anything would register as being late. That was because we would need time to actually check in stuff that was returnEd up through noon.

And your lateness can be excused if you work late the day before.

But using CE logic they should dock their pay for being late.

I agree that late fees don't make much sense and are just a way to punish people (and profit the company) but at the same time, I'd rather face a $5 late fee on my gas bill than an immediate cut-off for being late.
