Current Events > I was thinking today, was Doom 3 the most Overhyped game in history?

Decade long build up for a bad FPS game. Yes even back then I found it boring, too dark, too repetitive, and too narrow.

Graphics and lighting effects that are great for the time but basically on par with an early Xbox 360 game a year later.

And finally a price tag higher than every other game of the time, an expansion adding even more costs to a game that already wasnt that big, and removed multiplayer. To get the full game with the expansion cost over 100 bucks. I think the game went for 55 or 60 base price on xbox back in 2004.

You add that all up and you got a game that keeps getting remade but honestly shouldve been in the bargain bin in a week.

At least Duke Nukem Forever abd Perfect Dark Zero had a full online multiplayer and different environments.

See how can you even compare Doom 3 to Spore because Doom 3 had such a track record of being great and a decade of hype woth a company that was great.

Also I heard Spore was at least okay, Doom 3 I honestly would argue was bad.

I honestly don't remember much of the hype leading up to Doom 3, but it couldn't possibly be more ridiculous than Daikatana

I had no idea it had a lot of hype. But you gotta admit, the graphics were great(especially for the time), very atmospheric. I played through the whole thing, inc. expansions a while back, and imo, its still great.

Yeah but people were also freaking out over the lighting and graphics which doesnt make a good game and really wasnt that advanced as we saw with the upcoming hardware a year later.

It also played nothing like the other dooms, no coop, 4 man multiplayer, and different environment that was more closed quarter so all I saw was hate for it.

Just wasnt good the new ones are great, more opened and not pitch black.

7 remake and KH 3 were both great this was garbage. Watch Dogs was a new IP and didnt have a 10 year wait and charge more than ebery other game.

This game was not received well I dont know where you think it was . Even the companies like gamespot gave it maybe a mediocore 8 because they are too afraid to rock the boat and admit its total trash.

It was received fairly well actually, not sure what you're on about

TC is definitely mixing up Overhyped and Disappointing. Doom 3 had a notable amount of hype but yes, it was disappointing.

An actual game that was overhyped so much that it ended up giving people impossible expectations was probably Final Fantasy 7R. I say this only because Advent Children came out in 2005 and FF7 fans everywhere had recurring wet dreams about a fully CG FF7 experience for the next 10 years where it was revealed for the first time and they had to wait an additional 5 years for essentially Nomura's butchered Disc 1 experience.

I know what FF7R is actually about, i'm just describing it in the same manner that the average FF7R hater would.

There's some turnaround of opinion in the Doom community going on. It's kinda like how the prequels are viewed more positively now than before.
