I get the rental angle, since buying it means one person could split the initial cost, and then just pass the content around/ invite people over to watch. Renting only staves this off, but also turns people off (like me) from seeing it, when I can just wait a few months to see it for free anyways.

Disney rarely deserves pity, but as someone who works in the film biz, I feel for them. Films are massive investments, and not being able to make the likely $500M+ they would have made with a theater run puts them in a bind.

What has Disney put out that was any good? And I'm not counting studios they bought because they suck, like Marvel, I mean an actual Disney movie. The last one I can remember being any good was maybe Lion King or Alladin? And I'm not talking about the remakes.

I remember Hunchback sucking. Pocahontas was no good. Mulan was eh. Then you had most of the garbage in the early 2000s. It has been a long time since Disney put out anything of quality.

I mean if 2 parents + say avg 2 kids go to a movie + snacks that is well more than $30 spent. So parents would be saving money that way.

A single person going well then they are getting screwed.

Disney represents the "safe choice" of movie selections.

What they release is rarely good, but almost never below average, and heavily geared toward appealing to the general public, with always high production values (so the movie will always "look" good).

For many people, watching Disney movies is investing their time and money into something they know will be okay at worst without thinking too much about it.

Disney has also successfully created a culture around watching their movies. So if you choose to not watch their "safe", general audience appeal movies, you are liable to be left out of social conversations if you don't watch them, if you care about that.

Are you actually talking "good" or "great"? And what are you actually counting as Disney?

Broadly speaking, even a so-so Disney film is generally better than a very good film produced by somebody else. There are very few bad Disney films.

The real question is will these movies eventually be available for streaming for everybody (which would be a kick in the teeth to buyers/renters) or permanently paywall'd (which would defeat the point of a streaming service like that)

$30 is a bit high, but I can understand going with a higher price than the $20 that has been standard for such releases so far because it's more of a family movie and you're therefore likely to get larger groups watching the rental. Gating it behind the subscription is also pretty questionable, since that just makes the cost that much more prohibitive for people that aren't already subscribing (turning them off of becoming subscribers any time soon). Personally, I'm okay with $20 because it'd probably be me and my girlfriend watching it and that's roughly what going to the theatre would cost anyway (at least, what it would cost if I actually paid money for it, since I get points for using my credit card that I can use on movies), but $30 is a bit much and I'll just wait for it to release on Disney+ normally.

Zeus posted...

I wouldn't really call it a kick in the teeth. That's what has happened to every single movie that's ever been put onto a streaming service after being released in theatres, and before that what has happened to every single movie that's ever shown up in a bargain bin or Blockbuster. Watching a movie in theatres (which is what these rentals are meant to be a substitute for) hasn't been a matter of exclusive access since home video started being a thing. It's just early adoption, whether because you like the experience of the theatre or just want to see it sooner than you'd otherwise be able to.

I can't imagine they wouldn't. It'll probably be a while, since they'll ride out the normal theatre period with this rental system (that is, keep renting it like this until it stops being profitable to do so, which will probably take longer than a typical theatre release), then give it a physical/download release a little while after that, then only release it on Disney+ once they feel they've exhausted those early adopters as well, but it'll be there eventually.

Never releasing it on Disney+ or adding a premium tier would set a precedent that would turn a lot of people off of the service. People subscribe because they want to watch Disney stuff. If the service no longer lets them watch Disney stuff, then there's not a lot of point in subscribing. There's precedent for streaming services being successful with multiple tiers (here in Canada, one of our major telecoms runs their own service (Crave) that has multiple sub-subscriptions that you have to pay for to access movies, or HBO content, or a few other things that are higher-demand), but generally, that only works if there's little competition (said telecom made a point of buying up distribution rights for a bunch of high-profile shows purely for the purpose of keeping them off Netflix so their cable service seemed more attractive, then eventually launched Crave to actually use the licenses). That's not the case for Disney+, so I doubt it would work very well.

Yeah. It's around 10 per person for me if I paid full price. Not sure about the price of popcorn or snacks as I've never bought them from a cinema but I'd guess it's around 60 for a group of 4 with popcorn.

I get two for one on cinema tickets through something we have called meerkat movies. It allows 2 for 1 on selected cinemas and some food places. You get this for a year by taking some insurance but some insurance doesn't even cost anything so it's basically free. As for snacks I take my own in.
