I think what it comes down to is this: Sony and Marvel have the Spider-man PS4 deal. Sony and Marvel want to keep making money off of the Spider-man character for years to come but ultimately its Marvels decision as to whether or not permit Square Enix to use the character. Square Enix probably asked Marvel to be able to use Spider-man. Marvel (in order to keep a good relationship with Sony) probably sought Sonys input on the matter, which resulted in Sonys grip being firmly around this game. Sony probably sought a partnership with SE in order to give them Spider-man. As a result, theyre getting exclusives such as exclusive marketing, beta early access, and Spider-man. I feel like ultimately SE probably cared more so about getting to work on a character like Spider-man than about the implications of the partnership with Sony. Marvel probably could have given SE permission from the beginning, but I think it more so has to do with Marvel and Sony wanting to maintain their own relationship over time that resulted in this. Sony and Marvel want to keep making money off of the Spider-man character for years to come but ultimately its Marvels decision as to whether or not permit Square Enix to use the character. Square Enix probably asked Marvel to be able to use Spider-man. Marvel (in order to keep a good relationship with Sony) probably sought Sonys input on the matter, which resulted in Sonys grip being firmly around this game. Sony probably sought a partnership with SE in order to give them Spider-man. As a result, theyre getting exclusives such as exclusive marketing, beta early access, and Spider-man. I feel like ultimately SE probably cared more so about getting to work on a character like Spider-man than about the implications of the partnership with Sony.
