This seems to be a subject that many people know plenty about, but not me. I don't understand. People talk about Nietzeche, Kant, Hegel and Zizek like it's nothing. I'm not willing, at this time, to sit and read the "important" books on the subject of philosophy, and until now have read various articles, watched medium-length documentaries, and such. Please tell me various things about philosophy. Ideally, people would give me a brief overview of the major philosophers (which includes some of the names I've dropped, but isn't limited to them), outlining their most important ideas and what they thought it general.

How I fallen behind? Am I that bad? Why do people appear to know this stuff really well, but not me? Also, is this stuff actually of that much value? From what I do know - which admittedly isn't that much - much of philosophy seems abstract, very unhelpful, badly expressed, needlessly complicated, and disproven in later centuries. I suppose this belief is much of the reason why I've avoided philosophy until now, since it does seem kinda pointless, and often outdated.

Thoughts on all this?

Philosophy literally translates to "love of wisdom" and is the Ph in PhD. So, if you enjoy learning new things then you're already a philosopher!

Then maybe look into some Asian, African or Middle Eastern philosophy

It's the basis of all methods of competent reasoning and being able to think for yourself.

Thing is though, you want people to tell you philosophy. It doesn't work that way. If you actually want to understand it you have to do it, at least to some extent, for yourself.

Step 1: watch the matrix

step 2: any time you have an original thought or perceive something, ask yourself how do I know that the machines didnt program my mind in the matrix to think/perceive this

congrats you are now a philosopher

I majored in philosophy, and this site was really helpful:

https://plato.stanford.edu/

it gives biographies of philosophies, explains different schools of thought, gives definitions to terms, etc.
